Venepuncture, catheterization and failure to position correctly during central venous cannulation.

The authors analyse the incidence of puncture, catheterization and failures of positioning in a series of 420 central venous catheterizations performed in 388 patients, using six transcutaneous approaches: supraclavicular and infraclavicular subclavian, external and internal transjugular, antecubital and brachiocephalic. Puncture failures were recorded at 7.9% per 36 failures from 456 attempts, catheterization failures at 5.8% per 26 failures from 446 attempts, and misplacements at a rate of 5.7% per 23 misplacements during 420 catheterizations. The results show that, in respect of puncture, catheterization and success of positioning, the supraclavicular subclavian approach may be recommended preferentially. The internal jugular, brachiocephalic and infraclavicular subclavian approaches are also advantageous. A high rate of failures and misplacements was recorded in the antecubital and external jugular groups. The antecubital veins, however, should be reserved for orthopnoeic sitting patients, the success rate being significantly increased if the patients are sitting.

Structural Changes in Thylakoid Proteins during Cold Acclimation and Freezing of Winter Rye (Secale cereale L. cv. Puma).

Thylakoids were isolated from nonhardened and cold-hardened winter rye (Secale cereale L. cv. Puma), and subjected to sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence and absence of sulfhydryl reagents. Electrophoresis of cold-hardened rye thylakoid proteins revealed the presence of a 35 kilodalton polypeptide and the absence of a 51 kilodalton polypeptide found in nonhardened rye thylakoid proteins. The 35 kilodalton band could be induced by adding beta-mercaptoethanol to nonhardened rye thylakoid proteins, whereas the 51 kilodalton band could be formed by adding cupric phenanthroline to these same proteins. Sulfhydryl group titration showed that cold-hardened rye thylakoid proteins contained more free sulfhydryls than nonhardened rye proteins. Although amino acid analysis of thylakoid proteins revealed quantitative differences in several amino acid residues, the polarity of thylakoid proteins did not change during cold acclimation. No significant changes in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels of thylakoid proteins appeared when either nonhardened or cold-hardened plants were frozen in vivo or in vitro. However, thylakoid proteins did aggregate when frozen in the presence of beta-mercaptoethanol. Although thylakoid proteins isolated from cold-hardened rye contained more reduced thiols, a general state of reduction did not act as a cryoprotectant. It is hypothesized that conformational changes of specific proteins may be important for low temperature growth of rye.

Menstrual cycle phases and personality variables as related to response to erotic stimuli.

The present research examined the relationship between menstrual cycle phases and response to erotic stimuli. Correlations between response to erotic stimuli and extraversion and neuroticism, as measured by the Eysenck Personality Inventory, were also investigated. Subjects were 60 university coeds who were shown explicitly erotic slides and asked to rate their sexual arousal while viewing these stimuli. Although significant effects were found for slides, no significant differences were noted amont women at different points in the menstrual cycle. Nonsignificant correlations were obtained between slide ratings and extraversion and neuroticism.

Time spent in hospital by children: trends in the Oxford Record Linkage Study area.

Routine statistics of hospital care are conventionally based on episodes of care. Thus, whilst statistics on lengths of stay per episode of hospital care are readily available, information is not routinely collected on the total time spent in hospital by individuals who experience several episodes of care. This paper presents data from the Oxford Record Linkage Study which was used to calculate the total length of time spent in hospital by children in each year from 1975-84. The findings of this study provide reassurance that, despite the increase in admission rates in childhood during this period, the total length of time children spend in hospital has generally declined.
