[Calcium dobesilate in the treatment of primary venous insufficiency of the lower limbs. A controlled clinical study].

Fourty patients with lower limb chronic venous insufficiency entered a randomised placebo controlled study with calcium dobesilate for one month. Clinical symptoms and plethysmographic parameters were evaluated before and after therapy in all patients. In the group of patients treated with calcium dobesilate we observed an improvement of clinical and instrumental parameters; no changes were found in the placebo group. We observed good tolerance to the drug and no side effects required withdrawal of treatment.

Action of cinnarizine on the hyperviscosity of blood in patients with peripheral obliterative arterial disease.

Cinnarizine, a drug capable of improving blood flow, was studied for its action on blood viscosity and its main components in patients affected by peripheral obliterative arterial diseases (POAD). Both acute and chronic administration of the drug diminished the increased whole-blood viscosity in patients, without affecting plasma and serum viscosity, hematocrit, plasma fibrinogen concentration, and plasma osmolality. Since cinnarizine also led to a significant increase of peripheral muscular blood flow, it was hypothesized that this action may be due to an increased deformability of the red cells, and may play a considerable role in the therapeutic approach to POAD.

Arterial Occlusive Diseases

The effects of intravenous isoxsuprine on blood viscosity in patients with occlusive peripheral arterial disease.

1 Blood viscosity is thought to be a major factor in disorders of the peripheral circulation. 2 Ten patients with obliterative arterial disease received an infusion of isoxsuprine of 20 micrograms kg-1 for 30 min. The infusion was followed by a highly significant and prolonged fall in blood, plasma and serum viscosity, in haematocrit and in plasma fibrinogen concentration. Blood lipid levels were also studied: total lipids and total cholesterol did not alter; triglyceride level was significantly lowered at the end of, and after, drug infusion. 3 There was no change in blood, plasma or serum viscosity in the four patients receiving a control infusion 2 days before the infusion of isoxsuprine. 4 The relationships between lowered viscosity and increasing peripheral tissue perfusion are discussed.

[Controlled multicentric trial of the antihypertensive agent indapamide].

Two-months' administration of 2.5 mg/day indapamide, preceded and followed by 2 weeks of a placebo, led to a significant fall in pressure values and normalisation of diastolic pressure in a high percentage of 47 subjects, mostly with essential hypertension, in a controlled multi-centre trial. Absence of toxic effects, tolerance and therapeutic activity at low doses recommend the drug for most cases of arterial hypertension.
