A life review interview guide: a structured systems approach to information gathering.

This clinical project introduces a guide to provide the interviewer with a methodological systems approach for information gathering in the life review process. The guide is structured in such a way as to elicit positive life events for the purpose of enhancing a sense of well-being as well as to elicit negative life events to encourage the client to address unresolved loss-grief issues. In effect, the Life Review Interview Guide serves to promote high self-esteem and to assist the interviewee through the grieving process. In addition, the Guide assisted the student-interviewer in formulating and selecting a wide range of questions.

Loss-grief addiction model.

This group study features a loss-grief inventory in the treatment of ninety-eight substance abusers in a public outpatient treatment facility. The inventory serves as both assessment and treatment tools. That is, the inventory helps the counselor and the client to identify unresolved loss-grief issues which may contribute to the addiction; it also serves as a treatment tool to assist the client through the grieving process. In identifying losses, the client has three time categories from which to choose: 1) pre-addiction losses; 2) losses associated with the addiction; and 3) losses associated with entering treatment. An additional feature of the inventory illustrates a simplified procedure to compute the client's unresolved loss-grief level through use of a 5-point Likert scale.

Maria: developing a culturally-sensitive treatment plan in pre-hospice south Texas.

This is a case study of a young Mexican-American woman who suffered from end-stage renal disease and severe depression in Texas, before the availability of hospice care. The patient, while struggling to retain her cultural identity in a renal care unit which stressed efficiency, was labeled noncompliant by the medical team. Through knowledge gained from staff discussions, the medical team was able to integrate cultural sensitivity and hospice principles into the treatment plan. With an increased focus on her psychosocial needs, the patient was able to die with a sense of dignity and cultural integrity.
