[Changes in the work and life of bank employees with repetitive strain injury: RSI].

Nowadays, Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) has been one of the most serious problems concerning workers' health. Aiming at analyzing the main changes in the work and life of RSI bearers from an RSI Bearers Association in Cascavel--Paraná, we developed this qualitative study. Semi-structured interviews were applied to nine bank employees. The first symptoms had appeared during the period of automation and introduction of new technology in the Brazilian financial system, which was when changes in work organization took place. The main elements in this process were the increase in work load, use of computers, overtime work, absence of intervals, monotony, repetitive actions, intense work and productivity control, pressure and tension. The aggravation of injuries affected productivity and caused dependence to carry out activities at work and out of it. A challenge lies in ensuring these worker's rights.

[Evaluation of the body posture of nursing personnel when moving patients in bed].

The patients' movement in bed, is a procedure that demand great physical effort and use of good corporal mechanics for the nursing personnel, relative of preventing them back pain problems. Recognizing the importance of the movement and positioning, to promote safety and comfort to the patient, and before the professionals' complaints, described in the literature, this work has for objectives: to identify and analyzer the postures assumed by the nursing workers and identify the means and difficulties found during the execution of the referred activity. Through the technique of direct observation they were filmed, through videotapes, thirty procedures of patient's movement in the bed executed by nursing workers of an orthopedic clinic of an university hospital. The results evidence that the thirty procedures were executed along 197.41 minutes and that the corporal postures more frequently assumed they were, in respect to back, arms and legs, back inclined/arms with elbow down of row of seats/legs extension (53.76%). In agreement with the beginnings of the corporal mechanics and of the ergonomics, such postures are considered painful to the man, due to the muscle-skeletal aggressions and to the physical overload that they cart. The workers aimed the aspects little space (58.82%), physical load (52.94%) and absence of the personal (47.06%), as the main difficulties found in the execution of patient's movement in the bed, corroborating with the discoveries of the literature, characterizing that activity as painful. They pointed: the adequate technique (36.29%), used of sheet (35.29%) and space adequate (23.52%), as aspects that would facilitate the execution of the procedure.

[Absenteeism of nursing workers at a university hospital].

The purpose of this study was to identify the rates of absenteeism of nursing workers from a University Hospital due to diseases. Therefore, the author verified the number of absences due to health problems registered during 12 months, calculating the frequency rate as well as the percentage of wasted time. Data were collected and transcribed after consultation to reports organized by the human resources department of the institution studied. Results showed that the higher rate of absence occurred in the Pediatric Unit (If = 0.35) and the higher percentage of wasted time occurred in the Emergency Unit (Tp = 4.19). The author concluded that the rate of absenteeism due to disease was high among the workers, indicating the need of creating a database in order to optimize the registration of absences and their control as well as of stimulating the development of future research.

[Ergonomic working conditions for the nursing team in a cardiology unit].

Aiming at finding out the ergonomics conditions of the nursing personnel in a hospital admission unit, the authors utilized as a methodological presupposition the search for a global experienced work situation through the analysis of some elements as: the man (nursing worker); the work activity (prescribed duty, real activities and work position) and the environment (temperature, noise and illumination). The authors selected the Cardiology admission unit for the site of their research. The results verified that the nursing workers the mentioned unit face problems related to salaries, work installations, relationship, work organization, levels of formation and the activities executed. The authors suggested some recommendations.

[Postural problems and problems of equipment: an ergonomic study of users of microcomputers in a nursing school].

The computer usage has become essential nowadays and the Nursing staff meeting this technological improvement has been assimilating it in practice, which is started in Graduation course. As users of the computer division from a Nursing School we have observed students' complaints related to adequacy of the furniture used, then, we were interested in developing this research which has as object to analyze the furniture from the computer division according to the ergonomic recommendations and identify body posture adopted by the students in typing activity. The procedures used were performed in three stages, which were: free supervision of environment and furniture measure, surveillance of body posture and interviews. The results pointed out that the furniture is inappropriate referring to: fixed counter without foot support, without document case; chairs are not regulative, back support width out of recommended standards, there are no armrest and wheels, there are only four legs and the covering is slimy and stiff. Only in 18.6% of the observation period the students adopted to perfect posture in typing activity, that is, upright spinal column, elbows at the same level of the counter, deflected legs and supported feet. It is suggested that the workplace be planned for typing from known facts related to anthropometric dimension of the users and use of proper furniture in order to obtain a concordant set among furniture, milieu and user providing comfort and avoiding health problems.

[Posture taken by members of the nursing staff during blood collection, intravenous drug administration and serotherapy].

The members of the Nursing Team are submitted, many times, to posture attacks either due to the own requirement of the action or the utilization of improper corporeal posture during its execution. The present study aims at inquiring the type, length, frequency and posture changes adopted by the members of the Nursing Team during the execution of blood collection techniques, administering of intravenous medication and serotherapy. Through direct observation were recorded 10 activities corresponding to each one of the mentioned techniques, realized in attendance of patients from a University Hospital internment unit. The results evidenced that blood collection activity was 50, 35% effectuated in the inclined standing position, followed by the standing straight position, 49, 64%. Intravenous medication administering was executed with frequent adoption of the standing straight posture, 51, 09% (in special with the arm in frontal expansion), 45, 74% in the inclined standing position and 3, 15% seated. Serotherapy technique was executed with predominant adoption of standing position (86, 88%) in special with the arms in frontal expansion and 13, 11% in the inclined standing position. The unnecessary adoption, many times, of inclined standing posture indicates that Nursing personnel have been making possible the happening of spinal column attacks mainly due to the bad utilization of corporeal mechanic. The authors suggest more attention to these aspects, mainly at Nursing courses.

[Alternating shifts: mental fatigue in nurses].

The goal of the present study was to detect signs and symptoms of mental fatigue in nurses working in the hospital with shift schedule. The signs and symptoms of mental fatigue were measured by a subjective indicator, composed of a check list and two objective indicators called critical frequency of light fusion (Flicker) and Reaction Time to auditive stimulus (RTs). During fifteen consecutive days, morning, afternoon and night shifts of 12 nurses working in three different units of a university hospital were analyzed. The great rotation in work schedule, when in just one week a nurse can work up to three different shifts, is hazardous to the health, social, familiar and professional life of those nurses, who were not satisfied with the work schedule adopted by the institution and showed signs and symptoms of mental fatigue. The incidence of symptoms was greater for the night than for the morning shift which was greater than the afternoon shift and they frequently showed irritabilig and sleep disturbances. Indications of mental fatigue were detected by Flicker verification in the following order: morning shift greater than night shift which was greater than afternoon shift. On the other hand, using RTs the following indices of fatigue were detected: greater in the evening shift than morning shift which was greater than the afternoon shift.
