Interactions of mycorrhizal fungi with Pteris vittata (As hyperaccumulator) in As-contaminated soils.

A greenhouse trial was conducted to investigate the role of arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM) in aiding arsenic (As) uptake and tolerance by Pteris vittata (As hyperaccumulator) and Cynodon dactylon (a multi-metal root accumulator). Plants inoculated with lived and killed native mycorrhizas isolated from an As mine site were grown in a sterile and slightly acidic soil. The infectious percentage of mycorrhizas (0 mg/kg As: 26.4%, 50 mg/kg As: 30.3%, 100 mg/kg As: 40.6%) and the average biomass of shoots in infected P. vittata increased (0 mg/kg As: 2.45 g/pot, 50 mg/kg As: 2.48 g/pot, 100 mg/kg As: 10.9 g/pot) according to the increase of As levels when compared to control. The indigenous mycorrhizas enhanced As accumulation (0 mg/kg As: 3.70 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg As: 58.3 mg/kg; 100 mg/kg As: 88.1 mg/kg) in the As mine populations of P. vittata and also sustained its growth by aiding P absorption. For C. dactylon, As was mainly accumulated in mycorrhizal roots and translocation to shoots was inhibited.

Polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in human adipose tissue and breast milk collected in Hong Kong.

Contamination from persistent organic pollutants is a pervasive global problem that urgently demands global concern and action. In the present study, concentrations of organochlorine (OC) pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in 37 samples of female adipose tissue collected in Hong Kong hospitals. Among the pollutants analyzed, DDTs (2.79 ng/g fat), HCHs (0.72 ng/g fat), and PCBs (0.19 ng/g fat) were prominent compounds in most of the adipose tissue. p,p'-DDE and hexachlorinated biphenyls were found in all samples, whereas heptachlor epoxide and dieldrin were found only in some samples. An estimation of toxic equivalency concentration (TEQ) due to dioxin-like coplanar PCBs was also performed. The estimated TEQ(PCBs) was 2.01 pg/g fat. This study also compared our previous results obtained from the milk samples of the same donors. Significant correlations are obtained for DDTs and HCHs between milk and adipose tissue. Detailed review of available information concerning OC pesticides and PCBs in different ecological compartments indicated that bioconcentration and biomagnification of these contaminants are common phenomena of the Pearl River Delta region, which has undergone rapid socioeconomic change in the past 20 years. It is suggested to establish a regional organization in order to coordinate the monitoring of persistent organic pollutants in the region.

Enhanced uptake of As, Zn, and Cu by Vetiveria zizanioides and Zea mays using chelating agents.

Vetiveria zizaniodes (vetiver) is commonly known for its effectiveness in soil and sediment erosion control. It can tolerate to extreme soil conditions and produce a high biomass even growing in contaminated areas. Zea mays (maize) can also produce a very high biomass with a fast growth rate and possesses some degree of metal tolerance. A greenhouse study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of using vetiver and maize for remediation of arsenic (As)-, zinc (Zn-), and copper (Cu)-amended soils and evaluate the effects of chelating agents on metal uptake by these plants. Vetiver had a better growth (dry weight yield of root and shoot) than maize under different treatment conditions. The effects of different chelating agents on As, Zn, and Cu extraction from soil to soil solution were studied. Among the nine chelating agents used, it was noted that 20 mmol NTA could maximize As and Zn bioavailability, while 20 mmol HEIDA could maximize Cu bioavailability in the soil solution. The surge time in maximizing metal uptake ranged from 16 to 20 days which indicated that timing on plant harvest was an important factor in enhanced metal accumulation. In general, vetiver was a more suitable plant species than maize in terms of phytoextraction of metals from metal-contaminated soil. Application of NTA in As-amended soil and HEIDA in Cu-amended soil at the rate of 20 mmol kg(-1) increased 3-4-fold of As and Cu in shoot of both plants, whereas application of NTA (20 mmol kg(-1)) increased 37- and 1.5-fold of Zn accumulation in shoot of vetiver and maize, respectively. The potential environmental risk of metal mobility caused by chelating agents used for phytoextraction should not be overlooked.

The residual dynamic of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organochlorine pesticides in fishponds of the Pearl River delta, South China.

Hong Kong and South China are the most developed regions within China. The industrialization in these areas has resulted in severe environmental problems. Sediment and biotic samples including tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus), crucian carp (Carassius auratus) and mandarin fish/fresh water grouper (Siniperca chuatsi) were collected from different fishponds in the Pearl River Delta (Tanzhou, Sanjiao, Guangzhou, Shipai, Changan and Mai Po) for the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine (OC) pesticides. Mandarin fish, which belongs to the highest trophic level, accumulated the highest concentrations of PAHs and DDTs among all fish species. The levels of DDTs in fish samples ranged from 1.5 to 62ng g-1 (wet wt.), with more than 30% of the fish samples exceeding the limit of 14.4ng g-1 (wet wt.) for human consumption recommended by US EPA (2000). Levels of PAHs in fish samples ranged from 1.91 to 224.03ng g-1 (wet wt.), but the potency-weighted total concentrations of PAHs in all muscle tissues were below the guideline value of 0.67ng g-1 (wet wt.) for human consumption set by US EPA (2000). The guideline value calculated was based on a tissue consumption rate of 142.2g day-1 (4-5 meals per week), which is a more protective rate for populations with a high consumption of fish, like Chinese and Asians. The effect of lipid content in PAHs and DDTs accumulation in fish tissue was not significant in general.

Growth of Vetiveria zizanioides and Phragmities australis on Pb/Zn and Cu mine tailings amended with manure compost and sewage sludge: a greenhouse study.

The Lechang lead/zinc (Pb/Zn) mine and Dabao Shan copper (Cu) mine are located at the north of Guangdong Province in southern China. The residual tailings were permanently stored in tailings ponds which required revegetation to reduce their impact on the environment. A greenhouse study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using Vetiveria zizanioides (vetiver) and Phragmities australis (common reed) for the reclamation of Pb/Zn and Cu mine tailings and to evaluate the effects of organic amendments using manure compost (11.00, 22.03, 44.05 and 88.10 t/ha) and sewages sludge (11.00, 22.03, 44.05 and 88.10 t/ha) on the revegetation of these tailings. The results revealed that the applications of manure compost or sewage sludge not only increased N, P and K concentrations, but also decreased DTPA-extractable Pb and Zn contents in Pb/Zn tailings and DTPA-extractable Cu contents in Cu tailings. For Pb/Zn mine tailings, application of sewage sludge increased the yields of both species (highest yield at 44.05 t/ha), but not manure compost. For Cu mine tailings, application of manure compost (highest yield for both species at 44.05 and 22.03 t/ha for vetiver and common reed accordingly) or sewage sludge (highest yield at 22.03 and 44.05 t/ha for vetiver and common reed accordingly) increased the yield of both species. In general, vetiver achieved a higher yield when compared with common reed, under the same treatment. Plant tissue analysis showed that application of manure compost and sewage sludge could significantly reduce Pb uptake and accumulation, but not Cu in both vetiver and common reed.

Effects of TCDD in modulating the expression of Sertoli cell secretory products and markers for cell-cell interaction.

Among different mammalian tissues, testis is found to be one of the most sensitive organs to TCDD exposure. In this study, primary Sertoli cell culture was established. The purity of the cultured cells was verified using 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase as well as testosterone induction assays. Effects of TCDD in modulating the expression of CYP1A1, aromatase, secretory products (i.e. Mullerian inhibiting substance (MIS), 17beta-estradiol (E(2)) and lactate) and markers for cell-cell interaction (i.e. sertolin and testin) were then examined. Our data demonstrated that Sertoli cells exposed to 0.2-2000 pg/ml of TCDD showed a dose dependent induction of CYP1A1 mRNA. The minimal dose of activation was 2 pg/ml, which indicated that the cell was very sensitive to TCDD exposure. However, there was little or no detectable level CYP1A1 protein and EROD activities found. Dose-dependent inductions of aromatase transcript (200%) and E(2) (20%) secretion were measured. In addition there was a significant reduction (40%) of MIS mRNA. No detectable change in the level of secreted lactate was observed. Sertolin and testin, the gene makers for cell-cell interactions were differentially modulated upon TCDD treatment. Taken together, the results implicated that TCDD exposure might interfere with the normal Sertoli cell functions.

A review on the usage of POP pesticides in China, with emphasis on DDT loadings in human milk.

This article attempts to review the usage of nine pesticides included in the 12 Stockholm Convention persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in China and to examine the extent of DDT contamination in human milk, focusing on the Chinese populations. By comparing all the data available concerning DDTs in human milk from 19 countries, it is revealed that the Chinese populations exhibit rather high concentrations of DDTs, due to the fact that China has been a major producer and consumer of DDTs in the past, and also uses DDT for vector control, resulting in higher background levels of DDTs in different ecological compartments. The high body loading of DDT in Chinese populations is also related to the high dietary intake due to contamination of food. When comparing the data obtained recently (1998-2002), the coastal populations such as Guangzhou (DDE+DDT 2.13 microgg(-1) fat), Hong Kong (2.87 microgg(-1) fat) and Dalian (2.13 microgg(-1) fat) contain higher concentrations of DDTs which may reflect the dietary difference of consuming more meat and fish, than other Chinese populations (Beijing 1.96 microgg(-1) fat; Shenyang 0.87 microgg(-1) fat). In general, the rather low ratio of DDE/DDT (e.g., 4.07 for Guangzhou) of the Chinese milk samples reflected the more recent releases of DDT. It is recommended to impose a tighter control on the use of DDT for vector control as well as for agricultural application, conduct regular monitoring of DDT concentrations in different ecological compartments which include air, water, sediment and biota. Human milk is a preferred indicator reflecting human body loadings of POPs including DDTs, as well as the risk which may impose on our next generation. A national wide survey is needed to investigate the intake of POPs, including POP pesticides, due to dietary differences, with a strong focus on the more sensitive populations, e.g., coastal residents who consume a large amount of fish.

Inhibition of CYP450scc expression in dioxin-exposed rat Leydig cells.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, such as 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) have been recognized as highly potent developmental and reproductive toxins. We have previously demonstrated effects of TCDD in modulating the expression of rat Sertoli cell secretory products and markers for cell-cell interaction. In this study, we examined the direct biological effects of TCDD in rat Leydig cell primary cultures. Mature rat Leydig cells were purified by Percoll gradient centrifugation and the cell purity was determined by 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3beta-HSD) staining and a testosterone induction assay. To examine TCDD-induced biological consequences, we measured the changes in the secretion of progesterone and testosterone, as well as transcript levels of some selected steroidogenic enzymes (i.e. StAR, P450scc, 3beta-HSD and CYP17alpha), in TCDD/human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) co-treated cells. Our results indicated that TCDD (0.2 or 2 ng/ml) treatment significantly suppressed hCG (5 or 10 ng/ml)-induced testosterone secretion. The suppressive effect aligned with a reduction of progesterone secretion (P<0.05), as well as a decrease of P450scc mRNA and protein expression (P<0.05). The mechanistic action of TCDD was found to be via the reduction of cellular cAMP levels in the hCG-treated cells. This observation was further confirmed, as the TCDD-mediated suppressive effect could be reversed by dibutyryl cAMP co-treatment. The data indicate that TCDD can modulate cAMP signaling in rat Leydig cells to affect the process of steroidogenesis.

Screening of organochlorines in freshwater fish collected from the Pearl River Delta, People's Republic of China.

HCHs, DDTs, and PCBs were analyzed in fish flesh collected from fish ponds in the Pearl River Delta and compared with those from the Mai Po Marshes (a nature reserve) in Hong Kong, which was considered an unpolluted area. The concentrations for these contaminants were <0.01-7.8 ng/g lipid for HCHs, 22.3-381 ng/g lipid for DDTs, and 60-480 ng/g lipid for PCBs. Nevertheless, levels of HCHs and DDTs in fish flesh were lower than the China National Environmental Protection Agency maximum permissible limits set for foodstuffs. As for PCBs, 16% of fish collected from the Pearl River Delta exceeded the US EPA guideline concentration.

Accumulation of lead, zinc, copper and cadmium by 12 wetland plant species thriving in metal-contaminated sites in China.

The concentrations of lead, zinc, copper and cadmium accumulated by 12 emergent-rooted wetland plant species including different populations of Leersia hexandra, Juncus effusus and Equisetum ramosisti were investigated in field conditions of China. The results showed that metal accumulation by wetland plants differed among species, populations and tissues. Populations grown in substrata with elevated metals contained significantly higher metals in plants. Metals accumulated by wetland plants were mostly distributed in root tissues, suggesting that an exclusion strategy for metal tolerance widely exists in them. That some species/populations could accumulate relatively high metal concentrations (far above the toxic concentration to plants) in their shoots indicates that internal detoxification metal tolerance mechanism(s) are also included. The factors affecting metal accumulation by wetland plants include metal concentrations, pH, and nutrient status in substrata. Mostly concentrations of Pb and Cu in both aboveground and underground tissues of the plants were significantly positively related to their total and/or DTPA-extractable fractions in substrata while negatively to soil N and P, respectively. The potential use of these wetland plants in phytoremediation is also discussed.

Dioxin-like components in human breast milk collected from Hong Kong and Guangzhou.

The H4IIE rat hepatoma cell line was employed as a cell model to screen 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD)-TCDD equivalents (EROD-TEQ) of human breast milk samples collected from Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China. The screening methods employed a 96-well plate spectrofluorometer-EROD assay. For cell-line validation, our results demonstrated a dose-dependent increase in the Ah receptor-mediated response (i.e., CYP1A1 mRNA and EROD) of the cells upon exposure to a number of known Ah receptor agonists, including 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzothiophene, benzo[a]pyrene, and beta-naphthaflavone. TCDD induced CYP1A1 mRNA and EROD was in a close positive correlation (r=0.98). For the screening of dioxin-like compounds, breast milk samples collected during lactation weeks 3-5 were used. One hundred (from Hong Kong) and 48 (from Guangzhou) breast milk samples were assayed, of which 65% and 68% of the samples, respectively, showed detectable dioxin-like activities using the H4IIE cell EROD screening method. For sixty-five samples from Hong Kong the mean EROD-TEQ values ranged from 58.1 to 96.5 pg/g of milk fat for those aged 21-36 years while 32 samples from Guangzhou had mean values of 98.8-202.1 pg/g of milk fat. In comparisons of the EROD-TEQ values for different age groups from both cities, there were no significant differences (P<0.05). However, the mean and median EROD-TEQ values of the Guangzhou population were in general higher than those of the Hong Kong population. The results of the present study indicate that it is feasible to use the H4IIE cell-line as a model for screening dioxin-like compounds in human breast milk. In addition, the method is rapid and cost-effective, particularly for a routine and high-throughput sample screening analysis, compared to the costly and time-intensive chemical analytical techniques.

Modulation of AhR-mediated CYP1A1 mRNA and EROD activities by 17beta-estradiol and dexamethasone in TCDD-induced H411E cells.

TCDD elicits a variety of species- and organ-specific pathological consequences. The differential toxicities are thought to relate to the de novo modulation of TCDD action by endogenous hormones. Previous studies from this laboratory demonstrated a dose- and time-dependent induction of CYP1A1 expression and 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activities in H4IIE cells by picomolar levels of TCDD treatment. In this study, we examined the hormonal modulation of TCDD-elicited AhR-mediated biochemical responses. Lipid-soluble hormones, 17beta-estradiol (E(2)), diethylstilbestrol (DES), testosterone (T), 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), dexamethasone (DEX), and T(3), were studied for their possible interactions with the TCDD-mediated effects. Our results showed that CYP1A1 expression and EROD activities induced by TCDD were potentiated or suppressed, respectively, by DEX or E(2)/DES treatment. Other tested hormones, however, had no significant effect. Using a receptor antagonist (RU486), DEX-mediated potentiation of TCDD-elicited EROD activity was completely abolished. E(2)-mediated suppression, however, was not affected by cotreatment with the estrogen receptor antagonists, 4-hydroxytamoxifen or ICI 182780. Taking a step further to dissect the possible mechanisms involved, with the aid of cycloheximide (CHX), DEX-mediated potentiation was found to depend on the posttranscriptional process. The DEX pretreatment study indicated that the potentiation was a time-dependent process. In contrast, E(2)-mediated suppression did not rely on the synthesis of protein factors. Presumably it might hinder the formation of the activated TCDD/AhR complex and so the subsequent binding on DRE.

Aluminium and fluoride contents of tea, with emphasis on brick tea and their health implications.

Tea plant takes up a large quantity of aluminium (Al) and fluoride (F) from acidic soils. It has been known that fluorosis can be developed for people who consume a large quantity of tea made from brick tea, a low quality tea consisting mainly of old tea leaves in China. In addition, it has been claimed that Alzheimer's disease (AD) is linked with the Al content in the human brain. Therefore, the high Al content in tea, especially brick tea is also a concern. This article reviews the basis background on tea including classification, growth conditions, types of tea leaves and their production, and processing of tea. Special emphasis is made on the transfer of Al and F from soil to tea plant and then to tea liquor. Health implications of drinking a large quantity of tea liquor especially those made from brick tea are discussed. Recommendations are suggested to reduce the uptake of these two elements by tea plant, and lower their contents in tea products.

Toxicity assessment of sediments containing tributyltin around Hong Kong harbour.

Rather high levels of tributyltin (TBT) in sediments were found in certain areas around the Hong Kong coastline. Sediments from two contaminated sites (Tsing Yi and Yam O) and two clean sites were used to study the release of TBT contaminants from resuspended sediment to the water column by elutriate tests. The chemical analysis data of elutriates were compared with the effective or lethal concentrations from the toxicity tests of spiked solution using marine microalga (Dunaliella tertiolecta) and benthic invertebrate (Melita koreana) to assess the potential ecotoxicological impacts arising from the dredging work. Concentrations of TBT in filtered sediment elutriates were mostly below 0.002 microg/l which suggested that very little of TBT was released in soluble form. The lethal toxicity of TBT for the invertebrate expressing as 10 day-LC(50) was 2.31 microg/l for TBT and the alga expressing as 48 h-EC(50) was 0.46 microg/l. The results of this evaluation demonstrated that the release of TBT from two contaminated sites during dredging was unlikely to attain the effective or lethal concentrations on the two test species.

Organo-chlorine pesticide (DDT and HCH) residues in the Taihu Lake Region and its movement in soil-water system I. Field survey of DDT and HCH residues in ecosystem of the region.

The use of organo-chlorine (DDT and HCH) has been banned in China for 20 years. A field survey was carried out during 1999-2000 in the Taihu Lake Region. Organo-chlorine pesticide (OCP) residues in soil, water, fish and sediment samples were investigated. DDT was detected in 5 out of 10 samples with concentration ranging from 0.3 to 5.3 microg/kg in the surface (0-15 cm) layer, 6 out of 10 with 0.5 to 4.0 microg/kg in the subsoil layer (16-30 cm), and 4 of 10 with 0 to 2.7 microg/ kg in the deep soil layer (31-50 cm). Results for HCH residues in soil samples were similar to those of DDT. These results indicate that OCP residues in 0-50 cm profile had been leached out or degraded to safe level. In river water DDT was detected in 10 out of 13 samples ranging from 0.2 to 9.3 microg/l, with an average of 1.0 microg/l. While HCH was detected in 12 out of 13 samples ranging from 0.02 to 36.1 microg/l, with an average 5.6 microg/l. DDT residues in sediment ranged from 0.1 to 8.8 microg/kg, while HCH ranged from 0.3 to 66.5 microg/kg. DDT residues in fish body ranged from 3.7 to 23.5 microg/kg and HCH ranged from 3.7 to 132 microg/kg. These results demonstrate an accumulation through food chain (from soil-water-sediment-microbes-crop-fish-... etc.), also that HCH residues are generally more persistent than DDT residues. However, all these data are well below than the state warning standard limit.

Effect of phosphate fertilizer application on phosphorus (P) losses from paddy soils in Taihu Lake Region. I. Effect of phosphate fertilizer rate on P losses from paddy soil.

A field plot study was conducted on two types of paddy soils in the Taihu Lake Region, during the rice season of year 2000 in order to assess phosphorus (P) losses by runoff and vertical leaching, which are considered the two main pathways of P movement from paddy soil into its surrounding water course. Commercial NPK compound fertilizer and single superphosphate fertilizer were applied to furnish 0, 30, 150, and 300 kg applied P ha m(-2). The experiments consisted of three replicates of each treatment in Changshu site and four replicates in Anzhen site, with a plot size of 5 x 6 m2 in a randomized block. Results revealed that the average concentration range for total P (TP) in runoff was 1.857-7.883, 1.038-5.209, 0.783-1.255 and 0.572-0.691 mg P l(-1) respectively for P300, P150, P30 and P0 in Anzhen, while it was 2.431-2.449, 1.578-1.890, 1.050-1.315 and 0.749-0.941 mg P l(-1) respectively in Changshu. In all treatments, particulate P (PP) represented a major portion of the TP lost in runoff, it was 80% in Anzhen, and it was even more (>90%) in Changshu. Phosphate fertilizer treatments significantly affected P concentrations and P loads in the runoff. The mean concentration and average seasonal TP load from the P150 plots were 1.809 mg P l(-1) and 395 g P ha m(-2) season(-1) respectively, and lower than that from the P300 plots (2.957 mg P l(-1) and 652 g P ha m(-2) season(-1)). These were obviously higher than from the P30 (0.761 mg P l(-1) and 221 g P ha m(-2) season(-1)) and P0 (0.484 mg P l(-1) and 146 g P ha m(-2) season(-1)) respectively. There was no significant difference found between the P30 and the P0 in both sites. Under usual P application rate, there were total 31.7 and 20.6 tones P removed by runoff from permeable (Anzhen site) and waterlogged (Changshu site) paddy soils in the southern Jiangsu region (major part of the TLR) in the rice season of the year 2000. But if the P application rate is unusual high, or the Olsen P in soil accumulates to above a certain level, then this could sharply increase in the future. The average concentration of molybdate reactive phosphorus (MRP) in the vertical leachate from the four different P treatments ranged from 0.058 to 0.304 mg P l(-1) in Anzhen and from 0.048 to 0.394 mg P l(-1) in Changshu. P application rate significantly affected the MRP concentration at each depth in both sites, except for the 90 cm in Anzhen. The average MRP loads during the rice season moved by vertical leaching from the four treatments ranged from 163 to 855 g P ha m(-2) season(-1) in Anzhen and 208-1,825 g P ha m(-2) season(-1) in Changshu. Vertical leachate movement does not necessarily mean that it moves towards surface water and contaminate the watercourses in this flat plain paddy soil region, it does, however, imply that P can move down from surface layers of soil to deeper levels.

Status of trace elements in paddy soil and sediment in Taihu Lake region.

Thirteen paddy soil profiles and river sediments which are sources of irrigation water were collected around the Taihu Lake, and the trace elements were estimated. The content of La and Ce in paddy soil and sediment were 39.3 and 68.6 mg/kg soil and 36.9 and 65.1 mg/kg soil, being within the range of background values. The values for Pb, Cu, Ni, Cr, Co, Mn, Zn, Se in paddy soil were 23.3, 27.8, 25.5, 63.5, 10.2, 386, 68.7 and 0.25 mg/kg soil respectively, all below the national permission level. There was a decline of Zn in paddy soil. Some of the river sediments were seriously polluted. The river in Yangjin site was most contaminated with 5.47 g Cu/kg and 7.4 g Zn/kg. The high concentration of Pb and Ni also was observed in this sediment. River in Weitang, Huashi, Xinzhuang and Meiyan were contaminated with Pb, Cu and Ni to some extent. Zn, Cu and Pb were the main pollutants in present experiment sites. The fast development of village/township industries have caused severe environmental pollution in the Taihu Lake region, especially irrigation river sediments. Se content in plant and seed was 0.04 and 0.03 mg/kg respectively, showed Se-deficiency in paddy soil in the Taihu Lake region.
