Progesterone receptors, oestrogen receptor alpha and glucocorticoid receptors in the bovine intercaruncular uterine wall around parturition.

The bovine intercaruncular uterine wall expresses steroid hormone receptors throughout pregnancy. Concentrations of specific hormones undergo massive changes during the peripartal period and modulate the synthesis of their own receptors. This is well documented for the placentome, but respective data concerning the intercaruncular uterine wall are completely lacking. Thus, intercaruncular uterine wall segments from cows (I) being 8 and 9 months pregnant (slaughtered cows) and (II) cows undergoing a premature caesarean section 269-282 days after artificial insemination (AI) with (IIa, b) or without (IIc) induction of birth with PGF(2alpha) agonist or (III) receiving a caesarean section during severe dystocia (n=6, 5, 5, 5, 6 and 4 animals, respectively) were studied. In four naturally calving cows (IV) endometrial biopsies were obtained within 30 min after the expulsion of the calf. All tissue probes were fixed for 24h in 4% formaldehyde, routinely embedded in paraffin, and cut at 4 microm. Progesterone receptors (PR), estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha) and glucocorticoid receptors (GR) were assessed using specific antibodies and staining intensities were documented employing an immunoreactive score (IRS). PR, ERalpha and GR exhibited cell type- and location-specific distribution patterns. IRS for PR and ERalpha did not differ between groups. GR-IRS of endometrial stromal cells, however, were higher in animals undergoing premature caesarean section after induction of birth compared to animals slaughtered during month 8 or 9 of pregnancy or animals receiving caesarean section following dystocia. Results of the present study indicate that steroid hormone receptor amounts within the intercaruncular uterine wall do not (PR, ERalpha) - or in a tissue-specific manner (GR) only - change during the peripartal period, although respective hormones undergo massive changes during this period. This is in strict contrast to the placentome. Comparatively lower local tissue estrogen concentrations around term may be one cause for this difference.

Effects of two diets on the haematology, plasma chemistry and intestinal flora of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus).

Two groups of 22 budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) were housed for 12 months under identical conditions. One group was fed a commercial seed mixture plus carrots and a mineral supplement, and the other group was fed a commercially formulated diet plus carrots. Samples of blood and faeces were collected initially and after three, six, nine and 12 months. There were no significant differences between the haematological values of the two groups. The group fed the seed mixture had significantly higher concentrations of glucose, albumin, triglycerides and uric acid, and higher activity of aspartate aminotransferase, but the values were within the published reference ranges for normal birds. There were no significant differences between the faecal samples from the two groups, except that the fungus Macrorhabdus ornithogaster was identified in 48.3 per cent of the samples from the group fed the commercially formulated diet but from only 3.4 per cent of the samples from the group fed the seed mixture.

Effect of exercise and suspensory on scrotal surface temperature in the stallion.

In this study, the effect of exercise (treadmill, riding) on scrotal surface temperature (SST) in the stallion with and without suspensory was evaluated. Experiments were carried out between September and November 2004 using 12 Franches-Montagnes stallions from the National Stud in Avenches (Switzerland). Each stallion performed a standardized incremental treadmill and a ridden test with and without suspensory. The intensity of exercise was monitored by heart rate and blood lactate concentration. For SST measurements, special thermistors were developed and affixed to the most ventral part of the scrotum over each testis. SST was recorded telemetrically at 1min intervals. Our results show that type of exercise (treadmill/ridden) and suspensory (with/without) significantly influenced SST. The mean SST level was higher during treadmill (32.2+/-0.02 degrees C) than during ridden exercise (30.4+/-0.03 degrees C) and mean SST differences between stallions with and without suspensory were smaller in treadmill (0.4 degrees C) than in ridden (2 degrees C) exercise. These findings clearly demonstrate that ambient airflow, which was higher during ridden exercise, is important and effective in SST regulation. In order to prevent possible thermal damage to spermatogenic cells we recommend removing the suspensory immediately after exercise.

Influence of immunization against GnRH on reproductive cyclicity and estrous behavior in the mare.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of active immunization against GnRH on ovarian activity, plasma progesterone and estradiol concentrations and on estrous behavior in adult mares. Eighteen cyclic mares were randomly divided into a treatment and control group. Nine mares were immunized twice with 2 mL (400 microg GnRH-protein conjugate) of a GnRH-vaccine (Improvac, CSL Limited, Australia) administered intramuscularly, 4 weeks apart. Control mares received the same amount of saline solution. Ovaries and uterus of all mares were examined weekly by ultrasonography from 3 weeks before to 60 weeks after first immunization. Thereafter, vaccinated mares were evaluated monthly until 100 weeks after first vaccination. In addition, mares were teased with a stallion for assessment of estrous behavior and blood was collected for progesterone, estradiol-17beta and GnRH antibody titer determination. Results demonstrate that vaccination against GnRH significantly (P<0.05) influenced all parameters, except estradiol-17beta concentration. All vaccinated mares ceased reproductive cyclicity (plasma progesterone <1 ng/mL, follicles <3 cm) within 8 weeks after the first injection and ovarian activity remained suppressed for a minimum of 23 weeks. Five mares resumed cyclicity (follicles >3 cm, progesterone >1 ng/mL) while three mares showed only follicular activity (follicles >3 cm) and one mare remained completely suppressed for the entire duration of the study. In spite of ovarian suppression, four mares expressed sporadic and one mare continuous estrous behavior. In conclusion, reproductive cyclicity in adult mares can be successfully suppressed by immunization against GnRH but the timing of resumption of cyclicity is highly variable and estrous behavior may occur in spite of ovarian suppression.

Incidence of Neospora caninum and other intestinal protozoan parasites in populations of Swiss dogs.

The protozoan parasite Neospora caninum is one of the most important abortifacient organisms in cattle worldwide. The dog is known to act as definitive host although its potential role as infection source for bovines still remains unelucidated. The aim of the present study was to compile initial epidemiological data on the prevalence and incidence of N. caninum in Swiss dogs acting as definitive hosts. Thus, 249 Swiss dogs were investigated coproscopically in monthly intervals over a period of 1 year. A total of 3289 fecal samples was tested by the flotation technique. Among these, 202 were shown to contain Sarcocystis sp. (6.1%), 149 Cystoisospora sp. (=Isospora sp.; 4.5%) and 25 Hammondia/Neospora-like oocysts (HNlO) (0.7%). All but one sample containing HNlO were from different dogs; one dog shed HNlO at two subsequent time points. Calculation of the yearly incidence for HNlO resulted in the surprisingly high value of 9.2%. Farm dogs exhibited a higher incidence for HNlO than urban family dogs. Thirteen out of the 25 HNlO-samples showed sporulation after 5 days incubation at room temperature. HNlO were further differentiated by species-specific PCR. However, all HNlO-samples were negative for N. caninum, Hammondia heydorni and Toxoplasma gondii. One reason may be the low oocyst density found in most fecal samples, which did not permit us to carry out PCR under optimal conditions. Three out of the 25 HNlO-cases contained enough oocysts to allow further enrichment and purification by the flotation technique. Subsequently, twenty to fifty sporulated HNlO-oocysts were orally administered to Meriones unguiculatus. All gerbils were seronegative for N. caninum at 5 weeks p.i. A N. caninum-seroprevalence of 7.8% was determined by ELISA upon 1132 serum samples collected from dogs randomly selected by veterinarians among their clinical patients.

Pregnancy effects on distribution of progesterone receptors, oestrogen receptor alpha, glucocorticoid receptors, Ki-67 antigen and apoptosis in the bovine interplacentomal uterine wall and foetal membranes.

Until recently, studies dealing with the uterus of the pregnant cow focus primarily on the placentome or on early and late pregnancy. Thus, there is a paucity of information about many aspects of the interplacentomal uterine wall including adherent foetal membranes. Corresponding tissue specimens were collected at the slaughterhouse and in animals undergoing premature caesarean section. Two specimens per month of pregnancy were assessed immunohistochemically for progesterone receptors, oestrogen receptor alpha and glucocorticoid receptors, Ki-67 protein and TUNEL procedure was performed. The latter two methods were employed in three animals each per months 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 7 and 8 and in six animals undergoing caesarean section at days 274 and 275 post insemination or during spontaneous labour. Results indicate that proliferation and apoptosis are of minor importance for tissue homeostasis since both can histochemically be detected only sporadically. Thus, at the sites investigated here, cellular hypertrophy plays an important role for tissue growth during pregnancy. Progesterone receptors, oestrogen receptor alpha and glucocorticoid receptors, however, exhibit cell type and pregnancy stage specific distribution patterns within the tissues assessed. Progesterone receptor immunoreactive scores remained fairly unchanged during pregnancy. Oestrogen receptor alpha scores, however, generally decreased and glucocorticoid receptors increased with ongoing gestation. Progesterone receptors and oestrogen receptor alpha were present in endometrial stroma and in myometrial smooth muscle cells during whole pregnancy. Oestrogen receptor alpha was detectable during whole pregnancy also in uterine glands. Progesterone receptors were, however, present at a very low level at the latter site only during months 1-3 and 6-9. Oestrogen receptor alpha and glucocorticoid receptors may also mediate uterine blood flow since they were present in the tunica media of uterine blood vessels. Results of the present study indicate, that progesterone and its receptor play an important role during whole gestation, mainly for uterine quiescence. Glucocorticoids and their receptors - possibly in cooperation with oestrogens and decreasing amounts of the oestrogen receptor alpha - should trigger processes initiating parturition, such as endometrial prostaglandin production. Further studies - including the periparturient period - should help to understand the exact role of the extraplacental compartment of the uterine wall for the initiation and progress of parturition.

Histomorphological and immunohistochemical findings in testes, bulbourethral glands and brain of immunologically castrated male piglets.

The aim of this study was the histological and immunohistochemical evaluation and comparison of testicular, bulbourethral and brain tissue in immunized and intact control boars. Fourteen male piglets, aged between 10 and 16 weeks, were vaccinated twice subcutaneously 4 to 5 weeks apart with Improvac, an anti-GnRH vaccine. The pigs were sacrificed 1 to 16 weeks following the second injection. Testicular weight was recorded and various tissue samples were collected and fixed in formalin and Bouin's fixative for histological examination. In addition, 2 boars were immunized five times and slaughtered 60 weeks after the last injection. Histological and immunohistological studies performed on testes and epididymes showed clear signs of atrophy in the immunized animals and a significant reduction in paired testes weight was seen in treated boars. Microscopically, the mean diameter of the seminiferous tubules was markedly reduced. Spermatogonia as well as few spermatocytes were visible between the Sertoli cells and Leydig cells were atrophic. None or only few spermatozoa were detected in the epididymis. The bulbourethral glands of immunocastrated pigs were smaller than in control pigs and showed histological evidence of atrophy. Immunohistological detection of LH and FSH in the pituitary gland of treated and control boars showed no quantifiable difference in the amount of these two gonadotropins and no lesions were visible in the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. From our findings it can be concluded that the anti-GnRH vaccine Improvac induces severe atrophy of testes and bulbourethral glands in immunized pigs. This effect appears to be reversible, depending on the immune response of each animal and the time elapsed after the last booster injection.

[Treatment of parturient paresis with high-dose calcium].

The goal of the present study was to evaluate a calcium dose that was higher than the conventional dose for treatment of parturient paresis in cows. Thirty cows with parturient paresis received 1000 ml of 40 per cent calcium borogluconate solution supplemented with 6 per cent magnesium hypophosphite. Cows in group A received 200 ml of the solution intravenously over a 10-minute period, and the remaining 800 ml via a slow intravenous drip over a six-hour period. Cows in group B received 500 ml of the solution intravenously over a 20-minute period, and the remaining 500 ml via a slow intravenous drip over a six-hour period. Afterwards, the cows were monitored continuously and examined every hour for eight hours. Samples of blood were collected from all the cows before treatment and at 10, 20, 40, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240, 300, 360, 420 and 480 minutes and 24, 48 and 72 hours after treatment. The concentrations of total calcium, ionised calcium, inorganic phosphorus and magnesium were determined. Cows that did not stand within 12 hours of treatment received one or more additional treatments. There was no significant difference in the recovery rate between the two groups. Of the 30 cows, 14 (47 per cent) rised after one treatment and 15 others (50 per cent) were cured after two or more treatments. One cow did not respond to repeated treatments and was euthanased four days after the start of treatment. The results of electrolyte analyses before treatment did not differ significantly between the two groups. In 27 (90 per cent) cows, the concentrations of calcium and inorganic phosphorus were lower than normal and in 3 (10 per cent) cows, only the concentration of inorganic phosphorus was lower than normal. The concentration of total calcium increased markedly ten minutes after the start of treatment in both groups, and at eight hours, the mean concentration of calcium was within the normal range. At 24 and 48 hours, the mean concentration of calcium was below normal, but at 72 hours it was again within the normal range. The concentration of inorganic phosphorus increased slowly in both groups, although it was not within the normal range at eight hours. In both groups, it achieved normal values at 24, 48 and 72 hours. The mean electrolyte concentrations did not differ significantly at any measuring point between cows that stood within eight hours of treatment and those that did not. Our results indicate that increasing the dose of calcium administered does not improve the recovery rate of cows with parturient paresis.

Electrolytes in bovine prepartum mammary secretions and their usefulness for predicting parturition.

Accurately predicting parturition in cows can be difficult because of the variability in gestation length and uncertainty of the time of parturition. The goal of the present study was to determine the electrolyte concentrations of prepartum mammary secretions of gravid cows and to investigate retrospectively the possible predictive relationships between these concentrations and the time of parturition. Twenty-three cows were sampled once daily for 3 to 12 d before they calved. The concentrations of calcium, inorganic phosphorus, chloride, magnesium, sodium, and potassium were determined by photometric methods. In addition, the concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and inorganic phosphorus were determined using rapid test kits. The correlation between the photometrically measured electrolyte concentrations and the time of parturition was highest for inorganic phosphorus (r = 0.74). The inorganic phosphorus concentration was 11.8 to 26.5 mmol/L in cows that calved within 24 h of sample collection. When 11.8 mmol/L was used as a cutoff concentration for inorganic phosphorus, 21.7, 47.8, and 87.0% of cows calved within 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. Within 12 d prepartum, the time of parturition can be estimated, with an error of +/- 32.4 h, by using the results of simultaneous determination of inorganic phosphorus and sodium concentrations in mammary secretions and a formula derived from a multiple regression analysis. The results of a phosphate field test positively and significantly correlated with those of the photometric analysis (r = 0.69) and the time of parturition (r = 0.41).

Influence of repeated treadmill exercise on quality and freezability of stallion semen.

The objective of this study was to investigate changes of quality and freezability of stallion semen in response to repeated acute treadmill exercise. Ejaculates from 11 stallions were collected, evaluated and frozen weekly during four periods of 4 weeks each defined as before (period 1), during (period 2) and after (periods 3 and 4) intense exercise. In fresh semen the gel-free volume, sperm concentration, motility, normal sperm and sperm with major defects (acrosome defects, nuclear vacuoles, abnormal heads, midpiece defects and proximal droplets) were evaluated. In frozen-thawed semen, motility as well as viability (SYBR-14/PI) were examined. In period 2, all stallions were exercised on an indoor high speed treadmill twice a week (total of eight sessions) using an incremental workload test. Heart rate was monitored telemetrically during exercise and blood samples were taken for determination of cortisol, testosterone and lactate. Results of our investigation demonstrate that heart rate and the plasma concentrations of cortisol, testosterone and lactate significantly (P < 0.05) increased during each exercise session. Furthermore, significantly more major sperm defects were present in periods 3 (69.5+/-2.1%) and 4 (66.8+/-2.1%) than in periods 1 (62.2+/-2.4%) and 2 (62.5+/-2.2%). Acrosome defects increased towards the end of exercise but improved 3 weeks later to values observed before exercise. In frozen-thawed semen, motility was significantly lower in period 2 (45.4+/-2.3%) compared to period 4 (51.6+/-1.7%) and viability was significantly lower in period 2 (49.2+/-2.0%) than in periods 1 (53.8+/-2.1%) and 4 (53.7+/-1.6%). Our results clearly demonstrate that in the stallion repeated strenuous treadmill exercise can negatively influence semen quality and freezability.

Fertility in heifers and cows after low dose insemination with sex-sorted and non-sorted sperm under field conditions.

The present study was performed to test fertility after low dose insemination with sexed and non-sexed sperm in dairy cattle under field conditions in Switzerland. Spermatozoa were stained with Hoechst 33342 and sorted by flow cytometry. A total of 132 heifers and cows were inseminated with 2 x 10(6) X-bearing, frozen-thawed sperm (A) and 91 animals were inseminated with the same dose using non-sorted, frozen-thawed sperm (B). Pregnancy examination by ultrasound was performed twice, 30-40 days (PE1) and 70-90 days (PE2) after insemination. The pregnancy rates after PE1 were 33.3% (9/27) and 59.3% (16/27) in heifers (P=0.05) and 27.6% (29/105) and 28.1% (18/64) in cows (P>0.05) for groups A and B, respectively. Embryonic losses between PE1 and PE2 in heifers were 11.1% (1/9) and 0% (0/16) and in cows 17.2% (5/29) and 5.6% (1/18), the differences between groups A and B not being significant (P>0.05). Calving rates in heifers were 29.6% (8/27) and 57.8% (15/26), whereas in cows 22.1% (23/104) and 23.4% (16/63) gave birth to calves (for both groups P>0.05). The sex ratio was different (P<0.05) between A (85.3%) and B (58.6%). From our results it can be concluded that conception rates of sorted and non-sorted semen are similar using an insemination dose of 2 x 10(6). Fertility may be increased by improving sexing technology and animal management.

Influence of estradiol on adrenal activity in ovariectomized cows during acute stress.

Stress-dependent activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) can compromise reproductive function in animals and humans. In addition, it has been shown that estrogens are also capable of influencing the activity of the adrenal cortex. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of estradiol (E2) on adrenocortical secretion of cortisol and progesterone as well as on pituitary LH-release in cows during stress. Five ovariectomized Brown Swiss cows were exposed to acute restraint stress (2-h immobilization in a trimming chute), either with or without E2 treatment. Blood samples were taken every 15 min during a 5-h period for determination of cortisol progesterone and LH. Our results demonstrate that during the 2-h stress period mean cortisol concentrations significantly (P < 0.05) increased in all cows independent of E2 treatment. Mean progesterone concentrations also increased during stress, but the effect was only significant in E2-untreated cows. In contrast to cortisol and progesterone, mean LH values decreased in all animals during stress, but the decline was not significant. However, significantly lower mean LH values were seen at the end of the stress period comparing to values before stress. In cows without stress, E2 treatment had no significant effect on mean values of all three hormones analyzed. From our results it can be concluded that in ovariectomized cows (a) acute stress increases cortisol and progesterone secretion but decreases LH release and (b) the stress induced adrenocortical and pituitary responses were clearly attenuated under the influence of estradiol.

Influence of vedaprofen (Quadrisol) on quality and freezability of stallion semen.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) vedaprofen (Quadrisol) on quality and freezability of stallion semen. Experiments were performed using 22 Franches Montagnes stallions from the National Stud in Avenches (Switzerland) randomly divided into a control and test group. Vedaprofen was given orally to all stallions of the test group at the recommended therapeutic dose (initial dose of 2mg/kg followed by 1mg/kg body weight every 12h) for 14 days. Control animals received the same amount of carrier substance. During treatment, blood samples of five stallions in both test and control group were collected for PGF(2 alpha)-metabolite (PG-metabolite) determination. Ejaculates from all stallions were collected and cryopreserved weekly for 14 weeks from September to December. Concentrations of PG-metabolite, PGF and PGE were measured in the seminal plasma of ejaculates collected 2 weeks before, during and 2 weeks after treatment. In fresh semen the volume, concentration, motility and number of normal sperm and sperm with major defects (acrosome defects, abnormal heads, nuclear vacuoles, proximal droplets, midpiece defects) were evaluated. In frozen-thawed semen samples motility as well as viability (SYBR-14/PI) were tested and the hypoosmotic swelling test (HOS) was performed. Results demonstrate that vedaprofen had no effect on blood plasma concentration of PG-metabolite but significantly inhibited both, PGF and PGE concentrations in seminal plasma. Furthermore, all quality parameters in fresh and frozen-thawed semen were not affected by vedaprofen treatment but the time of semen collection had a significant (P<0.05) effect on motility, normal sperm and sperm with nuclear vacuoles in fresh semen.

Comparison of sodium bicarbonate and carbicarb for the treatment of metabolic acidosis in newborn calves.

Carbicarb (an equimolar mixture of sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate) was compared with sodium bicarbonate alone for the treatment of acidosis in newborn calves: 25 of 49 calves with a blood pH at birth of less than 7-2 and a base deficit of less than -3 mmol/litre were treated intravenously with sodium bicarbonate and 24 were treated with carbicarb. The doses were calculated on the basis of the base deficit in a blood sample taken 10 minutes after birth, and further blood samples were taken immediately after the treatment and 30 and 60 minutes after the treatment for the determination of acid-base status, blood gases and haematological and biochemical variables. Both treatments resulted in a significant increase in blood pH, but there was no difference between them. The mean (sd) blood pH before treatment was 7.09 (0.02) and after treatment it was 7.28 (0.01). There was no increase in the partial pressure of carbon dioxide after treatment with either sodium bicarbonate or carbicarb. Both treatments were associated with an increase in sodium concentration and decreases in the total erythrocyte count, haematocrit and haemoglobin concentration.

Evaluation of an electrolyte analyser for measurement of concentrations of ionized calcium and magnesium in cats.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the Nova CRT 8 electrolyte analyser for determination of concentrations of ionized calcium (Ca(i)) and magnesium (Mg(i)) in cats, to determine the effects of sample handling and storage and to establish reference ranges. The precision and analytical accuracy of the Nova CRT 8 analyser were good. The concentrations of Ca(i) and Mg(i) were significantly lower in aerobically handled serum samples than in those handled anaerobically. The concentrations of Ca(i) and Mg(i) differed significantly among whole blood, plasma and serum. In anaerobically handled serum, the concentration of Ca(i) was stable for 8 h at 22 degrees C, for 5 days at 4 degrees C and for 1 week at -20 degrees C. The concentration of Mg(i) was stable for 4 h at 22 degrees C but for less than 24 h at 4 degrees C and for less than 1 week at -20 degrees C. In serum from 36 cats, the reference ranges were 1.20-1.35 mmol/L for Ca(i) and 0.47-0.59 mmol/L for Mg(i). The Nova CRT 8 electrolyte analyser is suitable for determination of Ca(i) and Mg(i) concentrations in cats. Anaerobically handled serum samples are recommended and, stored at room temperature, they yield accurate results when analysed within 4 h.

The corpus fibulae in sheep (Ovis ammon f. aries)--ontogeny, persistence, size and shape from the fetal period to adulthood.

Osteological characteristics are often used to identify animal species. In this regard it is believed that the corpus fibulae of the sheep is represented by a tight cord of connective tissue--the so-called "ligamentum fibulare". The results of the present morphometric study indicate, however, that in 67% of the fetuses, 61% of the lambs or 48% of the adult sheep out of the 160 examined animals, the corpus fibulae is represented by a pin-shaped flattened piece of bone. The length of the corpus fibulae increases with age and varies greatly between individuals but in lambs and adult animals its centre is located close to the border between the proximal and intermediate third of the tibia (distal type) or closely attached to the caput fibulae by connective tissue fibres (proximal type). The cartilaginous fetal anlage is either transformed to bone or catabolised during fetal life. Desmal ossification should play an important role in the growth of the corpus fibulae since no cartilage could be detected in juvenile and adult sheep. Since there are many similarities in the expression of the corpus fibulae between sheep, goat and fallow deer, this osteological characteristic may not be used for a rapid specific and simple animal species identification procedure.

[Efficiency of a herd health program in Swiss dairy herds].

A retrospective analysis of the reproductive parameters was conducted in 15 dairy farms using a herd health monitoring system between 1995 and 1998. Five of these farms have used this monitoring process for many years (group 1) while 10 of them only initiated the process in 1996 (group 2). It was the aim of this study to evaluate the economic gain of the farms in each group due to the herd health monitoring program throughout the three year study period, by using Value Based Management (VBM), a model from the economic sciences. The mean calving to conception interval decreased from 93.3 to 84.0 days and from 104.9 to 86.7 days throughout the study period in groups 1 (P>0.05) and 2 (P < 0.05), respectively. The mean percentage of cows with calving to conception intervals below 115 days varied between 68.2% and 82.0% in group 1, while there was an increase form 65.2% to 78.6% in group 2 (P<0.05). There were no apparent trends in the reproductive culling rate throughout the study period (P>0.05), and the majority fell below 10%. Likewise, the first service conception rate varied between 52.7% and 56.6% and between 41.2% and 50.0%, in group 1 and 2, respectively. The number of services per conception varied between 1.6 and 1.8 and between 1.8 and 1.9, in groups 1 and 2, respectively. The number of days between calving and first service varied between 62.7 and 64.8 days in group 1, while it decreased significantly from 69.2 to 59.2 in group 2 (P<0.05). The time between first service and conception decreased from 30.6 to 22.0 days, and from 35.7 to 28.0 days in groups 1 and 2, respectively (P<0.05). Although there was an apparent increase of the detection rate of oestrus from 57.8% to 68.2% throughout the study period in group 1, it was not significant (P > 0.05). In group 2, however, the oestrus detection rate increased significantly from 53.0% to 69.9% (P < 0.05). The percent of detected oestrus within 42 days post partum increased from 33.1% to 38.1%, and from 24.1% to 40.9% in groups 1 and 2, respectively (P < 0.05). By 1998, four out of five farms in group 1, and five out of the eight farms where information was avail- year study period of CHF 25.- to CHF 609.- per cow and year. The calving to conception interval and the reproductive culling rate were the two most important parameters to determine the reproductive performance of the herd and the economic benefit of the herd health monitoring program. These findings support the implementation of a herd health monitoring program.
