The effects of aging on various syndromes of the tongue are discussed by reference to the results of a cross-sectional study of 1002 persons aged 13 to 97, with due consideration being given to data reported in the literature. A significant increase in the frequency of 1. pilosa, wrinkling of the tongue, papillary atrophy, sublingual venectasia, and an increase in the volume of the tongue were observed with advancing age.
Medical students and students of dentistry was interviewed with regard to their opinions about old people and the value of the studies under the aspect of preparation for the medical care of old patients. From 1.006 students, 238 was random selected. The investigation was carried out with help of a questionnaire, contained 53 parameters. In the majority of students positive opinions about old peoples found. On the other hand defects in the education was demonstrated. Concluding proposals are given for the improvement of studies.

It is reported about the results of a dental cross-sectional study, that was carried out among 310 participants of evening classes for old people. 229 women (73,9%) and 81 men (26,1%) participated in the investigation. The middle of age was 66,8 years. The statistical evaluation was followed with the factor-analysis. 6 common factors was extracted, described 56,9% of the total variance. Respecting the results of the study must be established, that this persons have a better status of oral health than usual is finding in the elderly. Beyond it was found, that the effect of the dental care is not sufficient, particularly on the field of metaphylaxe and dental health education. Concluding proposals are giving for the improvement of dental care of the elderly as a important part of complex care of old people.
Histamine is a biogenic amine, which is involved in a variety of biologic processes comprising inflammation, allergic responses, neurotransmission and regulation of gastric acid secretion. The key enzyme for the generation of histamine is histidine decarboxylase (HDC), which converts the amino acid L-histidine to histamine. In this article, we review the history, biochemistry and molecular biology of this enzyme. Northern blot studies in rats demonstrated that HDC gene expression in the stomach and liver are developmentally regulated with highest levels of expression in the late fetal state, indicating a role of the gene in growth and development. In the stomach of adult rats, HDC mRNA levels are elevated after omeprazole-induced hypergastrinemia, and in situ hybridization showed that expression of HDC is restricted to the glandular area in which ECL cells are located. Since no permanent ECL cell line is at hand for in vitro studies, we established a suitable cell system by stable transfection of a human gastric adenocarcinoma cell line (AGS) with the CCK-B/gastrin receptor. Transfection of this AGS-B cell line with reporter gene constructs comprising 5'-flanking DNA sequence of the HDC gene joined to the firefly luciferase gene revealed transcriptional regulation of the HDC promoter by gastrin through a protein-kinase C-dependent pathway. Taken together, these studies are consistent with the concept of HDC transcriptional regulation as at least one phase of the overall response to gastrin.
