How to incorporate and evaluate writing skills in animal science and dairy science courses.

For more than a century, teachers in all content areas have expressed concern about the writing skills of their students. Historically, the burden for teaching writing has fallen to English teachers, many of whom feel inadequately trained in rhetoric. Recently, faculty in many content areas, encouraged by the theories of composition specialists such as Stephen Tchudi, James Britton, Donald Murray, Ken McCrorie, and others, have begun to incorporate more writing into their disciplines, and today on many college campuses administrators strongly encourage and support training in writing across the curriculum. However, faculty in content areas other than English often feel they do not have the time or the knowledge to stress writing in their classroom. Current research in teaching writing effectively addresses both these issues. First, faculty in the college of agriculture can eliminate their students' resistance to writing by modeling and by consistently integrating writing into the course. Research suggests that content-area teachers may be more qualified than anyone to evaluate the effectiveness of their students' writing. The content-area teacher understands the material and can best determine how clearly the student has communicated an idea. Evaluating students' writing need not be overwhelming. Content-area teachers who are committed to incorporating more writing into their classes can use a variety of approaches in assessing their students' writing, many of which require limited grading. Furthermore, content-area teachers should remember that writing is as much a process as it is a product and daily writing exercises, which are generally short and often ungraded, can be integrated routinely into the curriculum without placing an unreasonable strain on the professor's time. A benefit to using daily writing is that it can help students master content as well as communicate effectively. After the content-area professor has developed a practice of using daily writing, he/she can then generate assignments that focus on the discipline. Assignments should be content-specific and authentic. This means the writing topics come from the discipline and the documents written mirror those students will read and write in their professions. Ultimately, the task of teaching students to communicate effectively must be shared by teachers across the curriculum.

Biosynthesis and assay of neurosteroids in rats and mice: functional correlates.

Pregnenolone (PREG), synthesized de novo in rodent brain, is the precursor of PREG sulfate (S) and progesterone (PROG). PROG is further converted to 5 alpha-pregnane 3, 20-dione (DH PROG) and to 3 alpha-hydroxy-5 alpha-pregnan-20-one (TH PROG). PROG, DH PROG and TH PROG have been measured in the brain of male and female rats. Neither PROG nor DH PROG disappeared from brain, contrary to plasma, after combined adrenalectomy (ADX) and gonadectomy (CX). Trilostane decreased PROG and increased PREG in the brain of CX+ADX rats and mice, in accordance with a precursor to product relationship. As previously described in CX male mice, the neurosteroid DHEA and its analog 3 beta-methyl-androst-5-en-17-one (CH3-DHEA) inhibited the aggressive behavior of female mice towards lactating female intruders. The decrease of biting attacks by DHEA was definitely more prominent in females neonatally imprinted with testosterone. The degree of inhibition of aggressive behavior was related to the decrease of PREG S concentrations in brain. The memory-enhancing effects of DHEA S and PREG S in male mice have been previously documented. Infusion of PREG S (12 fmol) into the nucleus basalis magnocellularis (NBM) of the rat after the acquisition trial enhanced memory performance in a two-trial recognition task (TTRT). Conversely, TH PROG (6 fmol), which potentiates GABAergic neurotransmission, disrupted performance when injected before the acquisition trial. Accordingly, we have found a positive correlation between the performances of 2-year-old rats in the TTRT and the concentrations of PREG S in the hippocampus, namely animals which performed best had the highest steroid levels.

Physical, psychological, and social resources as moderators of the relationship of stress to mental health of the very old.

The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the attenuating effects of physical, psychological, and social resources on the relationship between stress and mental health among the oldest old. Physical resources include perceived health and independence in functional and instrumental activities of daily living, while psychological resources include mastery, self-esteem, and coping. Social resources are measured by frequency of social interaction and size of the social network. Among the 124 women and 31 men (M = 89 years), greater independence in IADLs and greater perceived control of events significantly attenuated the adverse effects of strain on psychological well-being.

Aggression in female mice: contrasting effects of amiflamine (FLA 336), a selective and reversible MAO-type A inhibitor.

The effects of FLA 336 on the attack by resident groups of female mice on strange female intruders were assessed. This MAO-type A inhibitor clearly suppressed attack in treated subjects without producing major alterations in other activities but there was no clear dose-response relationship. The substance also increased attack on treated animals, an effect largely mediated via changes in the odor characteristics of the urine. The data emphasize the need for appropriate controls in studies with psychoactive compounds to distinguish direct (CNS-mediated) from indirect (mediated via changed signalling or perception) actions.

Determination of the trace elements zinc, copper, nickel and chromium in bone marrow and plasma of patients with non-Hodgkin lymphomas.

The concentrations of zinc, copper, nickel and chromium were determined in bone marrow and plasma of 37 patients suffering from non-Hodgkin-lymphomas (NHL). The results were compared with a control group of 10 patients with negative histopathologic results in bone marrow. The results demonstrate that all patients with low grade and high grade NHL have elevated trace element levels in bone marrow compared to the control group. In plasma there are also differences in the trace element levels of patients with NHL compared to the control group; the levels, however, are partly higher and lower than those of the control group. Altogether the plasma level differences are not as noticeable as those in the bone marrow. At the moment it is not yet possible to draw final conclusions from these results for the prognosis or therapy of NHL, but the study tends to show that intracellular measurement of trace elements is more reliable than intraplasmic measurement.

Hormonal and neurochemical correlates of various forms of animal "aggression".

The majority of studies attempting to evaluate the roles of hormones and neurochemicals in "aggression" concern laboratory rodents, notably rats and mice, with fewer investigations on infrahuman primates. Studies suggest that situations used to assess aggression (e.g., social conflict tests, parental attack, predatory behavior, use of unavoidable electroshock) actually tap a diverse range of motivations whose functions include offense, defense and predation. It is also apparent that ethoexperimental techniques, i.e., those applying ethological methodologies and concepts to laboratory situations, have advantages in assessing the direct and indirect consequences of chemical treatments. In this review, the impacts of hormonal manipulation (by surgery and/or application) and varying neurotransmitters (studied in terms of regional changes and as consequences of drug treatments) on a variety of forms of behavior are assessed. Different tests do show varying responses to common treatments, confirming the heterogeneity of the available paradigms. A brief discussion is provided of which tests are likely to prove most relevant to clinical studies.

Suppressive effects of dehydroepiandrosterone and 3 beta-methyl-androst-5-en-17-one on attack towards lactating female intruders by castrated male mice. II. Brain neurosteroids.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA) and 3 beta-methyl-androst-5-en-17-one (CH3-DHA) suppress attacks by castrated male mice towards lactating female intruders (Haug et al. Physiol. Behav. 46:955, 1989). Their effects on the concentrations of DHA, pregnenolone (delta 5P), and their sulfate ester (S) have been investigated in the brain of control and treated mice. A more than 2 fold, significant, decrease of delta 5P-S was the only change common to both steroids. DHA and CH3-DHA effects might be related to the antagonistic action of delta 5P-S on GABAA receptors.

The effects of 5-HT receptor ligands on ultrasonic calling in mouse pups.

The influence of a range of drugs acting at various 5-HT receptor sites on the ultrasonic calling of mouse pups was assessed. Calling was decreased by the novel anxiolytics buspirone, ipsapirone and gepirone, and by TFMPP, spiperone, ritanserin and GR 38032F. In contrast, 8-OH-DPAT, DOI and quipazine increased the rate of calling. These effects on ultrasonic calling were independent of sedative or thermoregulatory actions of these drugs. Present data provide further support for the view that ultrasonic calling can be used to assess novel compounds for possible anxiolytic or anxiogenic properties.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa LasB mutant constructed by insertional mutagenesis reveals elastolytic activity due to alkaline proteinase and the LasA fragment.

The extracellularly secreted endopeptidase elastase (LasB) is regarded as an important virulence factor of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It has also been implicated in the processing of LasA which enhances elastolytic activity of LasB. In order to investigate the role of LasB in virulence and LasA processing, a LasB-negative mutant, PAO1E, was constructed by insertional mutagenesis of the LasB structural gene, lasB, in P. aeruginosa PAO. An internal 636 bp lasB fragment of the plasmid pRB1803 was ligated into a derivative of the mobilization vector pSUP201-1. The resulting plasmid, pBRMOB-LasB, was transformed into Escherichia coli and transferred by filter matings to the LasB-positive P. aeruginosa strain, PAO1. Plasmid integration in the lasB site of the chromosome was confirmed by Southern blot analysis. Radioimmunoassay and immunoblotting of PAO1E supernatant fluids yielded no detectable LasB (less than 1 ng ml-1 LasB). The absence of LasB in PAO1E was further proven by the inability of its culture supernatant fluid to cleave transferrin or rabbit immunoglobulin G (IgG) after a 72 h incubation. The residual proteolytic activity of PAO1E culture supernatant fluid was attributed to alkaline proteinase (Apr), since it was totally inhibited by specific antibodies against Apr. Residual elastolytic activity in culture supernatant fluid of PAO1E was due to the LasA fragment and to the combined action of the LasA fragment with Apr on elastin. The sizes of purified LasA from PAO1 and PAO1E were identical (22 kDa). These results show that, besides LasB and the LasA fragment, Apr may also act on elastin in the presence of the LasA fragment and that the proteolytic processing of LasA in P. aeruginosa is independent of LasB.

[Inhibition by dehydroepiandrosterone of aggression responses of spayed female mice towards lactating intruders is potentiated by neonatal androgenization].

Female mice of an inbred Swiss strain were injected subcutaneously (s.c.) with either testosterone propionate or oil-vehicle on the day of birth. Once adult (8 week-old), they were spayed, and then treated either with dehydroepiandrosterone (80 micrograms/day s.c. for 15 days) or with solvent. The decrease of biting attacks by dehydroepiandrosterone was definitely more prominent in neonatally imprinted females than in controls.

Effects of 8-OH-DPAT and fluoxetine on activity and attack by female mice towards lactating intruders.

1. The impact of the serotoninergic receptor on the attack directed by female mice towards lactating intruders was assessed by studying the effects of 8-OH-DPAT (a serotoninergic agonist) and fluoxetine (an inhibitor of serotonin reuptake) on this paradigm at a range of doses and post-injection durations. 2. The specificity of these drug actions behaviour were examined by studying their effects on wheel running activity and performance in the open field. Non-sedative doses of 200 and 250 micrograms/kg of 8-OH-DPAT reduced attack by resident females on lactating intruders. 3. Higher doses (12-16 mg/kg) of fluoxetine reduced activity measures whereas lower non-sedative doses (up to 8 mg/kg) were without action on this aggression paradigm. 4. Additional studies with specific serotoninergic drugs are needed to clarify the role of this transmitter in attack by female mice on lactating intruders.

Ethnicity, self-care, and use of medical care among the elderly with joint symptoms.

Elderly individuals with self-reported joint symptoms representing three ethnic groups (i.e., blacks [n = 105], Hispanics [n = 100], and whites of Eastern European origin [n = 112] answered questions about their use of self-care and medical care for these symptoms. Ethnic groups differed in both self-care practices and their use of medical care for joint symptoms. Multiple regression analyses demonstrated that arthritis-specific and general health status were better predictors than ethnicity of the tendency to rely on self-care and medical care. There was no evidence that self-care served as a substitute for medical care.

Effects of dietary long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids on the essential fatty acid status of premature infants.

The effect of different diets on the percentage content of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCP; metabolites of linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids) in plasma lipids was studied in 29 premature infants on days 4 and 21 of life. Eleven infants were fed human milk which supplies LCP (1.7% of the fatty acids), 10 a commercially available milk formula without LCP, and 8 a new formula enriched with LCP of the omega-6 and the omega-3 series (0.5% LCP). LCP values in plasma lipids remained stable during the observation period in infants fed human milk. In contrast, LCP decreased markedly in plasma lipids of infants fed the conventional formula. Since the precursor fatty acids linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids were high in their diet and plasma, this finding indicates that premature infants have a limited capacity for LCP biosynthesis and may require their dietary supplementation. Infants fed the LCP enriched formula had significantly higher LCP proportions in plasma lipids than infants given the conventional formula, but less than infants fed human milk. Our results demonstrate that small concentrations of dietary LCP have marked effects on plasma lipid composition, particularly on phospholipids, suggesting that dietary LCP are preferentially channelled into structural lipids. We conclude that the essential fatty acid status of formula-fed premature infants can be improved by a supplementation of omega-6- and omega-3-LCP.

Suppressive effects of dehydroepiandrosterone and 3-beta-methylandrost-5-en-17-one on attack towards lactating female intruders by castrated male mice.

Three experiments were performed. In Experiment I, triads of adult castrated male mice were chronically administered with either oil-vehicle or 80 micrograms/day of dehydroepiandrosterone (D) or 3-beta-methylandrost-5-en-17-one (D-CH3). They were subsequently tested for their attack on a lactating intruder female introduced for 15 min in their home-cage, 2 hr after their last injection. Both D and D-CH3 significantly reduced male aggressive responses (cf. oil-injected category). In Experiment II the effects of D-CH3 dosed at 20, 40 or 80 micrograms/day were measured in the same testing situation. D-CH3 dose-dependently reduced the mice attack probability on lactating intruders with the highest dose being the most effective. Finally, to test in Experiment III that D-CH3 was not demonstrably androgenic, castrated males received daily injections of 20, 40 or 80 micrograms of this synthetic steroid for 4, 8, 16 or 32 days before tissue sampling. At all doses and whatever treatment duration, D-CH3 did not significantly increase the weights of the accessory sex organs.

5-(1-piperazinyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-3-amines as antihypertensive agents.

A series of 5-(1-piperazinyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-3-amines was synthesized and screened for antihypertensive and diuretic activity in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). One compound, 5-[4-[(3-chlorophenyl)methyl]-1-piperazinyl]-1H-1,2,4-triazol-3-am ine (8), was selected to define the mechanism of its antihypertensive activity. Studies in SHR suggest ganglionic blocking activity. Short-lived antihypertensive activity was observed in conscious renal hypertensive dogs.

Locus of control and decision making for posthospital care.

Discharge planning involves making choices about the type and amount of posthospital care a patient will receive within the reality of resource constraints. Elderly patients discharged from an acute-care hospital vary in their reactions to this decision-making process and the degree to which they exert final control over the decision. Perceived lack of control over the decision is associated with posthospital psychological distress for patients with high levels of internal locus of control, but not for those whose expectations for internal control are low.
