[Health consciousness and oral hygiene of the aged in homes and hostels].

Two hundred inhabitants of rest- and nursing homes--on an average age of 81 years--have been interrogated into their laymen's knowledges of dentistry, their habitual dental hygienics, and their opinion about dental treatment. The majority of these senior probands did not realize any connection between an insufficient dental hygiene and the origin of both caries and periodontal disease. They considered the oral hygiene being a matter of bodycare, not of medical prevention. The actual status of the teeth and the evaluation of the present dentures distinctly indicate that dental care to the old people needs to be greatly improved.

Rubella immunity measured by hemagglutination inhibition and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Evaluation of the immunity to rubella by the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), in a series of 1,697 sera collected from women of childbearing age, showed a 65% agreement; 33% were ELISA-positive and HI-negative at a 1:16 dilution and only 2% were ELISA-negative and HI-positive. Among 241 women given the rubella vaccine following an HI titer of less than 1:16, no change was observed in 208 in the postimmunization HI test, but only 11 were negative when ELISA was used. The retesting by ELISA of 110 preimmunization sera showed that 67 (61%) were positive, and therefore the vaccine had been unnecessarily administered. In a series of 72 HI tests that did not permit interpretation because of a nonspecific reaction, ELISA provided quite clear results. ELISA appears to be a sensitive technique for the evaluation of the true immune status to rubella in sera with low HI levels (less than 1:16), as well as in circumstances where the HI test reacts nonspecifically.

Prolongation of the ejaculation latency in the male rat by thioridazine and chlorimipramine.

Thioridazine (3 mg/kg) and chlorimipramine (1.5-6.0 mg/kg) prolonged the ejaculation latency and increased the number of mounts but did not change the number of intromissions preceding ejaculation. Blockade of peripheral and central noradrenaline receptors by phentolamine and phenoxybenzamine respectively resulted in a suppression of all aspects of the sexual behavior with increasing doses. DL-5-HTP (25-100 mg/kg) in combination with an inhibitory of peripheral 5-HTP decarboxylase (benserazide, 25 mg/kg) produced, like chlorimipramine and thioridazine, a prolongation of ejactulation latency and an increase in the number of mounts preceding ejaculation. Selective inhibition of 5-HT reuptake however, by zimelidine (0-20 mg/kg) or alaproclate (0-20 mg/kg) did not affect the mating behavior. At higher doses of these drugs some animals failed to initiate sexual activities. There was an increase in the postejaculatory interval but not change in the ejaculatory latency. It is concluded tha the prolonged ejaculation latencies observed following treatment with thioridazine or chlorimipramine is not due to a blockade of central or peripheral adrenergic alpha-receptors.
