A case of Pyemotes dermatitis. With a note on the role of these mites in skin disease.

Acute dermatitis developed in a fisherman after contact with old cherry-wood. A Pyemotes mite, probably P. beckeri, found in the wood, was thought to be responsible--thus illustrating the importance of appropriate laboratory examinations for ectoparasites. Human skin erruptions caused by indigenous, in contrast to imported, Pyemotes species have not previously been reported in Britain. These tarsonemoid mites attack small insect hosts and their possible role in dermatoses is discussed. Dermatitis caused by these mites is probably world-wide in distribution, but during the last century the confusing acarological nomenclature surrounding Pyemotes has resulted in an equally confusing variety of dermatological diagnoses.

Pyoderma gangrenosum associated with active chronic hepatitis: report of two cases.

In two patients, active chronic hepatitis was complicated by the development of pyoderma gangrenosum. The favorable response of the pyodermatous lesions to azathioprine therapy suggests that this drug may be of value in treating this disorder in patients for whom corticosteroid therapy produces no benefit or is contraindicated because of side effects. Azathioprine, too, is a potentially toxic drug and may need to be discontinued. Possible causal relationships between pyoderma gangrenosum and active chronic hepatitis are discussed.

The BRIDGE project: bridging the gap between university and schools. Being Responsive to Individual Differences in General Education.

BRIDGE (Being Responsive to Individual Differences in General Education) is a partnership between university faculty and two elementary schools, focusing on the collaborative practices and programs in general and special education. University faculty have adopted new roles as facilitators, rather than "experts," in working side by side with teachers seeking to increase their sense of professional efficacy. Teachers at the two sites collaborate with university faculty and each other in acquiring new information and practices within four initiative areas. The four initiatives, designed generally to support professional development toward meeting the needs of struggling students, are (a) collaboration between special and general education, (b) family liaisons, (c) teacher research, and (d) teacher education. University student teachers at these two schools receive their clinical education in settings ripe with teacher inquiry, collaboration, and ongoing development of new and creative strategies.

A randomized study of ondansetron syrup in children: evaluation of taste acceptability and tolerance.

Ondansetron, a highly selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, is available in an intravenous (IV) formulation and tables, but syrup would be particularly useful in children. As chemotherapy can affect taste perceptions, this study was undertaken to determine the preference between two flavors of ondansetron syrup in children undergoing chemotherapy. Fifty-nine children, randomized into a multicenter, double-blind, crossover study, each received 5 mg/m2 of IV ondansetron daily before chemotherapy. The syrup was then randomly given in two doses, one of each flavor, strawberry and grape, 30 minutes apart. The preference was assessed 30 minutes after the second dose of syrup had been administered. Taste was assessed by the child against a panel of five faces. Of those children expressing any preference, 70% preferred the strawberry flavor. Overall, 59% of children preferred the strawberry flavor, whilst 25% preferred grape (P = 0.005) and 15% expressed no preference. The only adverse event assessed as drug related by the investigator was constipation, which occurred in one patient. In conclusion, a strong preference was found for the strawberry formulation. The ondansetron syrup was safe and well tolerated.
