A mission to help, a mission of hope.

The Physicians' Health Programs (PHP) of the Society's Educational and Scientific Trust boasts a better-than-average, 85 percent recovery rate for impaired physicians. PHP's efforts are not punitive, but instead are positive: PHP treats impaired doctors and gets them back into the community to practice medicine. The program's new medical director. Thomas Hobbs, MD, PhD, talks about the future of the program.

Computers help reprogram injured brains.

Cognitive prosthetics is a new frontier. It seeks to find an artificial substitute for injured brain processes by using computers and other technologies. In recent years, the Physicians' Health Programs of The Educational and Scientific Trust of the Pennsylvania Medical Society has been working with the Institute for Cognitive Prosthetics to develop innovative therapies to help physicians with brain injuries return to a productive life.

Medical students tackle adolescent health.

Vincent J. Zarro, MD, PhD, is assistant dean of student affairs and director of the division of addiction medicine in the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University School of Medicine. For the past nine years, he has been involved in university efforts to address public health needs in the Philadelphia area through programs involving medical students.

Becoming an advocate for the elderly.

The Pennsylvania Department of Aging reports that as many as one in 20 older adults may be victims of abuse. In this article, John M. Prendergast, MD, MPH, medical director of the Center for Aging at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, discusses what he considers to be the most prevalent form of abuse--passive neglect. He considers it a problem about which all physicians should be better educated.

Veterans' health care: lessons for care planners.

Integrated care is a popular trend in today's health care marketplace. In this article, the former Pennsylvania secretary of health, now chief of staff at the Lebanon VA Medical Center, H. Arnold Muller, MD, describes a model integrated health care system which has been operating for almost 50 years--the medical centers run by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Reaching out to the poor.

Michael A. Moclock, MD, is a board certified family physician who practices part time at the Scranton Primary Health Care Center. He, along with Manuel Fonseca, DO, and Stephen Pascucci, MD, share responsibility for the center's pediatric clinic. The Scranton Primary Health Care Center offers the region's Medical Assistance and indigent populations a full array of medical services, including family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, and prenatal care. Last year, 6,800 people used the center's services.

Emergency medicine: ahead of the rest.

George E. Moerkirk, MD, FACS, is director of prehospital emergency medical services and former medical director of aeromedical services at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown. Since the early 1960s, Dr. Moerkirk has been a driving force in statewide efforts to develop and maintain a quality emergency medical services system in Pennsylvania.
