A consortium approach to nursing staff development.
Within a consortium framework, four teaching hospitals have developed a curriculum for nursing staff development. Since 1980, the institutions have realized significant savings. The courses provide networking and integration of new research and facilitate technological transfer. Other institutions may also find a collaborative approach beneficial.
The nurse as an educator.
The rapidly changing healthcare system offers challenges and opportunities for nurse educators. Increasing evidence of health promotion/consumer empowerment, cost containment, increase in chronic illness, and the continued expansion of medical technology requires nurses with broad educational competencies. These competencies include preceptoring, patient education, and formal presentation skills. In this article, the authors describe the development and implementation of a multifaceted staff development curriculum designed to support the nurse as an educator.
Preceptor development. Use a staff development specialist.
Preceptor orientation is a well identified need. Less often identified is the critical role the staff development specialist plays in the ongoing support and development of preceptors. In this article, the authors explain activities of coaching, facilitating, mentoring, and consulting. These role components are essential in the ongoing development of preceptors. This support also may help retain preceptors.
