Urinary profiles of volatile and acid metabolites in germfree and conventional rats.

Qualitative and quantitative differences in the urinary excretion of volatile and acidic metabolites in germfree and conventional rats were examined by capillary gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. A number of carbonyl compounds, including several short-chain aliphatic ketones and acetophenone, were higher in the conventional urines, while many heterocyclic compounds (furan derivatives, benzothiazole and others) were lower. Both qualitative and quantitative differences were observed in the urinary excretion of acidic metabolites. Three meta-hydroxy phenolic acids appeared only in the conventional rat urines, while levels of many other aromatic and aliphatic acids were also higher.

Measurement of nanogram concentrations of IgG by mixed hemadsorption.

UNLABELLED: We have modified the mixed hemadsorption technique so as to minimize the non-specific adsorption of indicator cells. This is accomplished by: (1) introducing fetal calf serum at several crucial steps in the procedure, and (2) standardizing the selection of high-power fields to be counted so as to avoid erratic adherence patterns which occur around the well rim. Using these adjustments, IgG concentrations in the 12.5--400 ng/ml range can be measured accurately. SAMPLE SIZE: 2 microliter. Test time: 4 h. No radioisotope is required.

RNA polymerase from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens infected with phi29 bacteriophage.

DNA-dependent RNA polymerase was purified from uninfected and varphi29-infected Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. Differences were observed in the specific activities, template specificities, stability, and sedimentation properties of the two enzymes. A polypeptide of 30,000 molecular weight was found in association with the polymerase of high specific activity from phage-infected cells and was absent from polymerase isolated from uninfected cells. The change in polymerase properties and the appearance of the polypeptide occurred early in phage infection.

Radiographic bone loss correlations and technetium-99m-MDP bone uptake in ligature-induced periodontal disease in the beagle.

The goal of this study was to develop an animal model for the study of acute periodontal disease using silk ligatures in combination with a soft diet in eleven purebred beagle dogs. The silk ligatures were placed subgingivally on the mandible second and fourth premolar on one side of the mouth; the opposite side served as a control. Dogs were monitored during the 16-20 weeks of ligature placement, and for 48 weeks after ligature removal. Development of periodontal disease was evaluated by radiopharmaceutical uptake into bone, radiographic evidence of alveolar bone loss, attachment loss, gingival index and prostaglandin level. Bone loss occurred on the ligatured side during the ligature phase of the study. Radiopharmaceutical uptake was correlated with radiographic evidence of bone loss during the ligature phase. No significant bone loss occurred during the post-ligature phase. Progressive periodontal disease was induced during ligature placement. However, a chronic less aggressive form was not sustained by soft diet alone after ligature removal.

Substance use and mental health problems: meeting the challenge.

Dual diagnosis is a term used to describe co-existing substance misuse and mental health problems. Although mental health workers have encountered people with a dual diagnosis in the past, the need to address the problems in the context of community care has never been greater. Literature from the USA suggests that specialist services, which pool resources and skills, are required to provide the specialized support for this client group needs. Existing services in the UK remain specifically focused on substance misuse or mental health, yet the growing body of research indicates the efficacy of providing both services simultaneously, preferably as one discrete service. Finding a pragmatic approach to working with dually diagnosed clients and their families is a challenge to all mental health and drug/alcohol workers and this article describes the efforts of specialist teams to deliver such a service.

Psychological methods of treating hallucinations and delusions: 1.

This article, the first in a two-part series, describes how the neuro-biological, social and environmental factors involved in the course and treatment of schizophrenia have helped to establish a pathway to recovery or remission that does not embrace pharmacological therapy alone. Research into drug-resistant symptoms and poor adherence rates (Curson et al, 1985) demands effective alternatives and additions to more traditional approaches to treatment such as medication. The second part of the article describes how evidence-based psychological interventions were used to help a client suffering from treatment-resistant delusions, allied to a chaotic lifestyle and substance misuse, that had previously presented a substantial challenge to the mental health services.

Hallucinations and delusions. 2: A dual diagnosis case study.

This article, the second of two parts, describes how evidence-based psychological interventions were used to help a client suffering from treatment-resistant delusions and substance misuse, allied to a chaotic lifestyle, that had previously presented a substantial challenge to services. The first part (Vol 8(15): 998-1002) Investigated how the neurobiological, social and environmental factors involved in the course and treatment of schizophrenia have helped to establish a pathway to recovery or remission that does not involve pharmacological therapy alone.

Values program allows employees to set performance standards.

Through a pilot program in values enrichment at Sacred Heart Medical Center, Spokane, WA, employees learned to evaluate their own and others' work behaviors. They identified the values that they believed would promote the medical center's best interests, and they suggested actions that could help or hinder the attainment of five key values: compassion, care of the poor, respect for the dignity of every person, high-quality care of the whole person, and teamwork in care giving. Each of the medical center's 32 departments as well as its management system committee prepared evaluation tools to measure employee performance. These tools, based on employee suggestions, are essential to the institution's ongoing attention to its values. Employee screening procedures, including an application form, to discern potential employees' readiness to further the institution's stated values also were developed. Other program accomplishments included the formation of an ethics committee, recruitment of a staff ethicist, and production of a videotape for use in employee orientation and in-service sessions.

Program accountability survey.

The public more and more is demanding accountability from its government agencies, professional bodies, and service areas. To address the accountability of a radiologic technology program in terms of its students, a questionnaire has been developed to send to them a year after they graduate. The responses are valuable in anticipating manpower needs, writing behavioral objectives, adjusting curriculums to meet changing needs, and responding to governamnet and accrediting agencies.

Ultrasound for detecting osteomyelitis in turkeys.

One thousand turkey legs were examined for osteomyelitis (OM) by ultrasonographic, pathologic, and bacteriologic examinations. OM lesions were recognized as hyperechoic (brighter white) disruptions in cortical bone in the growth plate region by ultrasound examination OM was confirmed histologically in 139 of 1000 legs. OM was detected by ultrasound in 109 of 139 OM-positive legs for a sensitivity rate of 78%. OM was not detected by ultrasound in 713 of the 861 OM-negative legs for a specificity rate of 83%. Ultrasonography was superior to current use of green liver discoloration for detection of tibial OM in turkeys at processing. The economic benefit to the turkey industry from the approval and application of this procedure could be considerable.
