Meiosis is re-initiated in starfish oocytes by the action of the hormone 1-methyladenine (1-MA). It is thought that the primary trigger is localised at the plasma membrane, and early changes reported are the activation of a Na+ pump and variation in membrane potential and conductance. We report here that external application of 1-MA results in an irreversible switching of the starfish oocyte membrane from one stable electrical state to another. This induced change requires the presence of the germinal vesicle.

Replacement of H2O with D2O in seawater causes exogastrulation in larvae of the sea urchins, Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus, Strongylocentrotus intermedius and S. nudus. When larvae at any stages before mesenchymal blastula stage are transferred to 40% D2O-seawater all of them develop gradually to exogastrulae and finally up to plutei with evaginated archenterons. Effects of D2O are partly reversible at limited steps of the way to exogastrulation. Fertilisation and cleavage are not affected appreciably by D2O (50% or less) except for the delay of cleavage.
1. Fairly high activities of arylsulfatase are found in the sperm and mature testes of all the sea urchins studied; Strongylocentrotus intermedius, Strongylocentrotus nudus, Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus and Anthocidaris crassispina, whereas the activities in the ovaries and eggs of these animals are low. 2. Neither the sand dollar, Clypeaster japonicus nor the starfishes, Asterias amurensis and Asterina pectinifera prove to have considerable activities of the enzyme in their gonads and gametes. 3. Most of the activity of arylsulfatase in the sperm of S. intermedius is found in the seminal plasma, but the significant activity is bound to the spermatozoa. 4. Part, if not all, of the spermatozoa-borne arylsulfatase is suggested to exist on the surface of spermatozoa or in the acrosome or both. 5. The ubiquitous distribution of sperm arylsulfatase in sea urchins on the contrary to its absence in starfish or sand dollar is discussed in connection with the penetration of sperm through egg investments.

From correlated histochemical and ultrastructural investigations of biopsy specimens of a rare case with delayed-onset neuropathy due to organophosphate (Dipterex) intoxication, several pathological characteristics were recognized in the muscle fibres. Most striking was concurrence of core/targetoids and multiple cytoplasmic bodies in the same fibres. Foci of markedly reduced or absent oxidative enzyme activity were revealed in 71.6% of type I fibres and in 3.4% of type II fibres. Most of those foci were two-zoned core/targetoids. Cytoplasmic bodies were also revealed selectively in type I fibres contrary to the previous reports. Targets, targetoids, cores and multicores were suggested to be strongly related to each other pathogenetically and to be due to the disturbance of some neurotrophic influences. In the biopsy specimen taken 220 days after exposure to the drug, numerous sarcoplasmic masses were revealed, and they were very likely to represent special forms of regeneration.
