[Basic and clinical examinations of CS-1170 in pediatrics (author's transl)].

1. CS-1170 was administered for the purpose of prophylaxis during cardiac catheterization in patients with heart disease, and its blood levels were measured. 2. The mean blood level (Moni-Trol I standard) after one intravenous shot of 20 mg/kg was 53.6 mcg/ml in catheterized children aged below 6 and 66.9 mcg/ml in catheterized children aged above 10 at 30 minutes, and 1.95 mcg/ml and 5.2 mcg/ml respectively at 6 hours. 3. The mean half life of the blood level was 1.09 hours in catheterized children aged below 6, 1.37 hours in catheterized children aged above 10, and 0.71 hours in infections children. 4. The urinary excretion seemed satisfactorily high although there was a great variation. 5. The clinical efficacy was 88.9%. 6. The bacteriological efficacy was 100% for E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus mirabilis and Staphylococcus aureus and was 0% for Staphylococcus epidermidis. 7. Although GOT and GPT were elevated in one case as a side effect, they rapidly returned to normal after discontinuation of administration.

[Experience with cefuroxime in pediatric field (author's transl)].

Having resistance to beta-lactamase-producing strains and showing resistance to not only cephalosporin resistant strains of E. coli and Klebsiella but also to Citrobacter, Proteus and Enterobacter, Cefuroxime (CXM) was used in pediatric field for both fundamental and clinical studies. CXM was found to be a useful antibiotic in views of high clinical efficacy rate obtained and no side effect noted. As for the dose, the single dose of 25 mg/kg achieved sufficient blood levels. Also in view of good clinical effect, the dose of 25 mg/kg three or four times daily seems appropriate for treatment of children.

Pituitary FSH is released by a heterodimer of the beta-subunits from the two forms of inhibin.

Inhibin is a gonadal protein that specifically inhibits the secretion of pituitary follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Two forms of inhibin (A and B) have been purified from porcine follicular fluid and characterized as heterodimers of relative molecular mass (Mr) 32,000 (ref. 2). Each inhibin is comprised of an identical alpha-subunit of Mr 18,000 and a distinct but related beta-subunit of Mr 13,800-14,700 linked by interchain disulphide bond(s). Throughout the purification of inhibins, we consistently observed two fractions which stimulated the secretion of pituitary FSH. We report here the isolation of one of the FSH-releasing proteins; it has a Mr of 24,000 and its N-terminal sequences up to residue 32 are identical to those of each beta-subunit of inhibins A and B. In the presence of reducing agents, SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis resolves the FSH-releasing substance into two subunits which are identical in their migration behaviour to the reduced beta-subunits of inhibins A and B. Based on the N-terminal sequence data and Mr of the intact and reduced molecules, we propose that the FSH-releasing substance, which is active in picomolar concentrations, is a heterodimeric protein composed of the two beta-subunits of inhibins A and B linked by interchain disulphide bond(s). The structural organization of the FSH-releasing substance is homologous to that of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), which also possesses FSH-releasing activity in the same bioassay. We suggest that the substance be called activin to signify the fact that it has opposite biological effects to inhibin.

Effect of coating materials on restorative glass-ionomer cement surface.

Historically glass-ionomer samples have been coated with a varnish to protect the material from the effect of water on the surface. However, varnishes have been shown to peel from this surface. The set cement matrix may become chalky and can erode rapidly. Light-cured glazing agents may demonstrate the ability to limit water movement across the setting-cement surface. In this in vitro study samples were investigated colorimetrically to evaluate the effect of water contamination. Perceivable differences were not found, particularly when a coating of light-cured bonding or glazing agents was applied. We conclude that the color stability of glass-ionomer cements is enhanced with the use of a protective coating of light-cured bonding or glazing agents.

A clinical study on the control of dental plaque using an electronic toothbrush with piezo-electric element.

A double-blind clinical study was conducted to compare the plaque-removing efficiency of a newly designed electronic toothbrush to that of a placebo, conventional toothbrush. Twenty-six students were selected at Asahi University, School of Dentistry in Japan. The subjects were divided into two groups, one which used the electronic toothbrush and the other which used the placebo toothbrush. The subjects served as their own control by brushing manually for 3 minutes. The plaque elimination ratio, however, showed no significant difference between the testing and the control group. The main conclusion of this study is that an electronic toothbrush is not superior to the conventional toothbrush.

Comparison of air-dried treatments after etching on the micromechanical bonding of the composite to ionomer surface.

Comparisons of air-dried treatments after etching on the micromechanical bonding of the composite to ionomer surface were made and clinical recommendations are provided. This in vitro study was made to evaluate the adhesion of the interface with a composite resin/bonding agent followed by air-drying surface treatment. The most effective surface conditions were found in the drying treatment groups. Non-air-dried (wiped dry with a tissue) surface groups were less effective.

Abrasion resistance of restorative glass-ionomer cements with a light-cured surface coating.

This is a comparative study of the Knoop hardness number and the toothbrush wear of a surface coating agent applied to the surface of a glass-ionomer restorative cement. A reduction in surface hardness of the coating agent resulted in an increase in brush wear. The light-cured glazing agent (Bellfeel Brightener) proved to be significantly harder than those coated with a light-cured bonding agent (Occlusin). Occlusin bonding agent was removed by comparatively rapid abrasion; however, the Bellfeel Brightener was significantly more resistant to such abrasion. The analysis of the surface hardness and scanning electron microscopy observations of the brushed surfaces of the samples suggested that Bellfeel Brightener was effective as a glazing material for glass-ionomer cement restorations.
