Patterns of auditory processing and articulation deficits in academically deficient juvenile delinquents.

Auditory processing deficits and articulation disorders were studied in a group of male juvenile delinquents. Significant auditory processing deficits were frequently observed and were significantly related to underachievement in reading, spelling, and arithmetic. In addition, articulation disorders were present in over 60% of the delinquent subjects. The results are interpreted to indicate that the evaluation of speech capabilities and auditory processing skills should be an integral part of treatment programs for delinquent populations. The importance of early intervention through identification and treatment of speech and language disorders in the early school period is supported.

Patterns of perceptual and academic deficits related to early chronic otitis media.

The effects of chronic otitis media during the first three years of life on developing auditory processing skills were examined. Two groups of children with auditory processing deficits were compared in areas of language development, intellectual factors, auditory processing skills, and academic capabilities. One group of children with auditory processing deficits had a history of severe chronic otitis media during the first three years of life, whereas a second group had auditory processing deficits but no history of early middle ear infections. The results indicate that subjects who had a history of chronic otitis media were slower in developing word combinations, had depressed verbal intelligence scores, manifested pervasive auditory processing deficits, and were significantly poorer in reading. A profile has been constructed that permits early detection of the child at risk.

Chronic middle ear disease and auditory perceptual deficits: is there a link?

Data are presented indicating a correlation between chronic recurrent otitis media of early childhood and in increased likelihood of subsequent auditory processing deficits in a group of children referred for evaluation of impaired learning. Helpful appendices are added for a better understanding a central auditory processing skills.

The learning-disabled juvenile delinquent: a case for early intervention of perceptually handicapped children.

The relationship between learning disabilities and juvenile delinquency is examined from an historical perspective as well as from the author's investigations. The majority of studies suggest that learning disabilities occur with significant frequency in delinquent populations. Perceptual disorders can be a significant cause of academic underachievement and poor social adaptation among youthful offenders. Preliminary results of an investigation of the learning-disabled delinquent confirm that the perceptually handicapped child is at high risk for developing these behavioral problems. As one of the first professionals who may be involved in the evaluation and treatment of the perceptually handicapped child, the occupational therapist is a key person in effecting early intervention. Early intervention is considered of prime importance as one preventive measure of juvenile delinquency.

Developmental and psychoeducational sequelae of chronic otitis media.

The developmental, psychological, and educational sequelae of chronic otitis media occurring during the first three years of life were investigated in a selected group of children with educational difficulties. One group of children had a history of chronic and severe otitis media, requiring myringotomy after 3 years of age. The control group had infrequent and relatively mild episodes of otitis media and no surgical intervention. Children with chronic and severe otitis media manifested substantial delays in speech and language, auditory processing deficits, disturbances in auditory-visual integration, reading disorders, and poor spelling skills. Early medical and educational intervention for children with a high-risk profile of language delay and severe chronic otitis media is suggested as a possible strategy for preventing the development of a specific learning disability.
