PURPOSE: It has been reported that tobacco smoking temporarily affects postural stability We have examined whether smoking habits have a long-term effect on the body balance control using computer-aided posturography. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The postural stability of 80 male forest workers was measured with a force platform technique with eyes closed. Average body sway velocity (ASV [mm/s]) was determined and used as a stability index. Detailed interviews on tobacco smoking and otologic examinations were carried out. Smoking habits were classified into five categories: nonsmokers (53.8%), ex-smokers (17.5%) and current smokers, comprising light (3.8%), moderate (15%), and heavy (10%) smokers. RESULTS: The smoking habits of the subjects correlated significantly with ASV, but hours of the exposure to noise and hand-arm vibration from chain saws did not. The correlation of the smoking habits remained significant even after eliminating the effect of age and exposure by partialization. Age in itself had no effect on ASV but interacted with smoking to increase ASV. The group means of ASV increased with the increase in smoking. Significant differences in ASV were found in the moderate and heavy smokers compared with the nonsmokers. CONCLUSION: Smokers exhibited more unstable posturographic results than nonsmokers. Smoking habits were suggested to have a long-term effect on the posture control system.
BACKGROUND: There are few studies that clarify the characteristics of bone turnover in children and adolescents. Furthermore, little has been published on changes in urinary CrossLaps(TM) (CTx) in Japanese subjects. AIM: To investigate biochemical markers of bone turnover in subjects, in relation to age and puberty development. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We measured serum bone specific alkaline phosphatase (B-Alp) and CTx in 1207 Japanese subjects aged 9-18 years. As an indicator of puberty development, the age that pubic hair appeared in males and menstruation started in females was obtained from questionnaires. RESULTS: B-Alp and CTx/Cr (creatinine) had high values before and just after the indicators and was lower thereafter, reaching a plateau in both genders. There was no significant difference in these values in males 5-6 years, or 7 years and more after the appearance of pubic hair. B-Alp and CTx/Cr values 7 years and more after menarche were significantly lower than those 5-6 years after menarche, however the differences were relatively small. CONCLUSIONS: Subjects in the second decade can be divided into three groups: 'before the appearance of pubic hair for males and menarche for females', 'up to and including 3-4 years after them' and '5-6 years and more after them'.
A total of 202 gastric carcinomas, including 33 type 4 carcinomas, were studied. Intratumoral vessels were stained with an anti-CD34 monoclonal antibody before being quantitated by light microscopy (x200). The mean vessel counts for type 4 carcinomas were significantly higher than those for any other type of carcinoma, with the exception of type 1 carcinomas. Multivariate logistic regression showed that the vessel count was one of independent variables associated with type 4 carcinomas. In addition, survival analysis demonstrated that patients with type 4 carcinoma had significantly less favorable survival rates than those with other types of carcinomas.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical usefulness of argyrophilic nuclear organizer region (AgNOR) staining as applied to cell imprint preparations in bladder cancer. STUDY DESIGN: The study group consisted of 59 bladder cancers (13 grade 1, 24 grade 2 and 22 grade 3). The staining time, quality of staining, relationship of AgNOR counts to tumor grade and interobserver variations in AgNOR counts were compared in cell imprint preparations and paraffin-embedded tissue sections. Interobserver variation was compared by calculating the coefficients of variation (CVs) and correlation coefficients between two independent observers. RESULTS: Following an optimal staining time of 30 minutes, the AgNOR dots of cell imprint preparations were highly distinct. In contrast, the optimal staining time was variable, and the AgNOR dots often were observed to aggregate in paraffin-embedded tissue sections. The mean AgNOR count was significantly higher in imprint preparations. AgNOR counts from the imprint preparations showed a stronger relationship to tumor grade. The CVs of AgNOR scores in the cell imprints was significantly smaller, and the correlation coefficient was significantly greater. CONCLUSION: AgNOR staining of cell imprint preparations is a more objective method than paraffin-embedded tissue sections in human bladder cancer.
