[Adrenergic receptors in sheep urethra (author's transl)].

The presence and types of adrenergic receptors in sheep urethra were investigated in vitro by pharmacological stimulation and blockage of alfa and beta receptors with agonist and antagonist drugs. Both adrenergic receptors were identified. Alfa stimulation increased tonicity and strength of contractions. Relaxation was obtained by beta adrenergic stimuli. Beta receptors in the sheep urethra belong to beta-2 type.

[Effect of lindane on protein nutritive utilization in trout (Salmo gairdneri) (author's transl)].

Rainbow trout weighing 100 + 10 g were fed three diets of different proteic content (67.6%, 53.2% and 36.1%) and exposed to 0.01 and 0.001 ppm of Lindane in water during 21 days. The parameters calculated were: Protein Productive Value (PPV), Conversion Index (CI) and Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER). The PPV parameter increased with a diet proteic level decrease, at control and at Lindane treated groups. Minimum protein utilization corresponds to 67.6% proteic content diet and 0.01 ppm Lindane, while maximum, to 36.1% proteic content and Lindane 0.001 ppm. The CI and PER parameters were markedly different in groups on extreme diets (67.6% and 36.1%) with higher contamination level (0.01 ppm) from all the others. The experimental parameters were not practically affected by the presence or absence of Lindane in groups on diets of medium proteic content.

[The age as a factor on the nutritive utilization of protein by rainbow trout (author's transl)].

Nutritive utilization of protein was studied in three age weight rainbow trout (Salmo gairdnerii) groups fed on a 37.5% casein-protein diet. As to digestive efficiency age was found to have no influence on the apparent and true digestibility coefficient for protein. On the other hand Biological Value, Net Protein Utilization and Protein Productive Value decreased with age-weight increases, the results being significantly correlated (P less than 0.001) between these parameters and the age-weight of the animals. Relative intake, weight increment and Protein Efficiency Ratio also decreased with age-weight increases.

Human chronome research at the service of veterinary medicine: a legacy of Erna Halberg.

The time has come for humans to return the debt to the many non-human species that were studied for the sake of humanity and to extend the motto of "doing unto oneself first what eventually is to be done to others" when the "others" are the patients of veterinarians. As physiologic monitoring benefits from advances in hardware and software, much chronobiologic information can be obtained on the chronomes of the different species cared for by veterinarians for a new health care focusing on prevention, implemented perhaps by recognizing and treating earliest rhythm alteration rather than merely the fact of overt disease.

[Chronobiology in medicine and surgery].

Chronobiology studies predictable variations, rhythms and trends in all forms of life. Each physiologic variable or system in an organism has a time structure which is genetically anchored and capable of being expressed in the absence of external cycles. However, it is normally adjusted by geophysical changes. Chronobiology quantifies rhythms by providing measures of amplitude and timing (phase and period), and a mean more precise than the arithmetic mean. The correct measurement of biological rhythms has led to considerable advances in the understanding of their underlying mechanisms of generation and expression. The use of information on rhythms is opening new opportunities in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. Chronobiology is also effective in the improvement of the quality of life by teaching self-help to the healthy individual.
