Tunable two-dimensional hexagonal phase array in domain-engineered Z-cut lithium niobate crystal.

An optical phase array with tunable phase step is demonstrated. The phase array consists of a two-dimensional hexagonal lattice of inverted ferroelectric domains fabricated on a Z-cut lithium niobate substrate. The electro-optically tunable phase step is obtained by the application of an external electric field along the z axis of the crystal via transparent electrodes. Theoretical analysis and experimental results are presented, showing that a tunable and flexible adaptive optical illuminator device can be realized by combining the electro-optic tunability with the Talbot effect. Generation of a multiplicity of light patterns is shown.

Recoil polarization for delta excitation in pion electroproduction.

We measured angular distributions of recoil-polarization response functions for neutral pion electroproduction for W = 1.23 GeV at Q(2) = 1.0 (GeV/c)(2), obtaining 14 separated response functions plus 2 Rosenbluth combinations; of these, 12 have been observed for the first time. Dynamical models do not describe quantities governed by imaginary parts of interference products well, indicating the need for adjusting magnitudes and phases for nonresonant amplitudes. We performed a nearly model-independent multipole analysis and obtained values for Re (S(1+)/M(1+)) = -(6.84 +/- 0.15)% and Re (E(1+)/M(1+)) = -(2.91 +/- 0.19)% that are distinctly different from those from the traditional Legendre analysis based upon M1+ dominance and ll(pi) < or = 1 truncation.

Quasielastic 3He(e,e'p)2H reaction at Q2 = 1.5 GeV2 for recoil momenta up to 1 GeV/c.

We have studied the quasielastic 3He(e,e(')p)2H reaction in perpendicular coplanar kinematics, with the energy and the momentum transferred by the electron fixed at 840 MeV and 1502 MeV/c, respectively. The 3He(e,e(')p)2H cross section was measured for missing momenta up to 1000 MeV/c, while the A(TL) asymmetry was extracted for missing momenta up to 660 MeV/c. For missing momenta up to 150 MeV/c, the cross section is described by variational calculations using modern 3He wave functions. For missing momenta from 150 to 750 MeV/c, strong final-state interaction effects are observed. Near 1000 MeV/c, the experimental cross section is more than an order of magnitude larger than predicted by available theories. The A(TL) asymmetry displays characteristic features of broken factorization with a structure that is similar to that generated by available models.

Measurement of the 3He(e,e'p)pn reaction at high missing energies and momenta.

Results of the Jefferson Lab Hall A quasielastic 3He(e,e'p)pn measurements are presented. These measurements were performed at fixed transferred momentum and energy, q=1502 MeV/c and omega=840 MeV, respectively, for missing momenta p(m) up to 1 GeV/c and missing energies in the continuum region, up to pion threshold; this kinematic coverage is much more extensive than that of any previous experiment. The cross section data are presented along with the effective momentum density distribution and compared to theoretical models.

[Idiopathic and secondary osteoporosis in childhood].

Osteoporosis is a common disease characterized by reduced bone mass, with a consequent increase in bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture risk. Bone mineral density (BMD) measurement is used to make the diagnosis of osteoporosis prior to incident fracture, and to predict fracture risk. BMD is determined by the peak bone mass achieved, and the rate and timing of subsequent bone loss. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is the most popular and effective method utilized for osteoporosis screening. Bone disease is a side effect of concern regarding chronic glucocorticoid (GC) administration. Most GC-treated patients exhibit a process of bone loss, frequently leading to osteoporosis, with increased fracture risk, especially in spinal vertebrae. Osteogenesis imperfecta is an inherited and generalized connective tissue disorder characterized mainly by bone fragility. Idiopathic osteoporosis of childhood or adolescence without blue sclerae and other stigmata of osteogenesis imperfecta is occasionally observed and sometimes more than one sib is affected. Beta-thalassemia major is associated with significant bone disease. The etiology of the bone disease is still debatable, many factors can adversely affect bone accretion in thalassemic patients. These include delayed puberty, bone marrow expansion, the deleterious effects of desferrioxamine, iron overload and genetic factors. Current treatment alternatives of osteoporosis include bisphosphonates, calcitonin, and selective estrogen receptor modulators.

Measurement of the generalized forward spin polarizabilities of the neutron.

The generalized forward spin polarizabilities gamma(0) and delta(LT) of the neutron have been extracted for the first time in a Q2 range from 0.1 to 0.9 GeV2. Since gamma(0) is sensitive to nucleon resonances and delta(LT) is insensitive to the Delta resonance, it is expected that the pair of forward spin polarizabilities should provide benchmark tests of the current understanding of the chiral dynamics of QCD. The new results on delta(LT) show significant disagreement with chiral perturbation theory calculations, while the data for gamma(0) at low Q2 are in good agreement with a next-to-leading-order relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory calculation. The data show good agreement with the phenomenological MAID model.

Measurement of the generalized polarizabilities of the proton in virtual Compton scattering at Q2=0.92 and 1.76 GeV2.

We report a virtual Compton scattering study of the proton at low c.m. energies. We have determined the structure functions P(LL)-P(TT)/epsilon and P(LT), and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha(E)(Q2) and beta(M)(Q2) at momentum transfer Q(2)=0.92 and 1.76 GeV2. The electric GP shows a strong falloff with Q2, and its global behavior does not follow a simple dipole form. The magnetic GP shows a rise and then a falloff; this can be interpreted as the dominance of a long-distance diamagnetic pion cloud at low Q2, compensated at higher Q2 by a paramagnetic contribution from piN intermediate states.

Q2 evolution of the neutron spin structure moments using a 3He target.

We have measured the spin structure functions g(1) and g(2) of 3He in a double-spin experiment by inclusively scattering polarized electrons at energies ranging from 0.862 to 5.058 GeV off a polarized 3He target at a 15.5 degrees scattering angle. Excitation energies covered the resonance and the onset of the deep inelastic regions. We have determined for the first time the Q2 evolution of Gamma(1)(Q2)= integral (1)(0)g(1)(x,Q2)dx, Gamma(2)(Q2)= integral (1)(0)g(2)(x,Q2)dx, and d(2)(Q2)= integral (1)(0)x(2)[2g(1)(x,Q2)+3g(2)(x,Q2)]dx for the neutron in the range 0.1< or =Q2< or =0.9 GeV2 with good precision. Gamma(1)(Q2) displays a smooth variation from high to low Q2. The Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule holds within uncertainties and d(2) is nonzero over the measured range.

Q2 evolution of the generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for the neutron using a 3He target.

We present data on the inclusive scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized 3He target at energies from 0.862 to 5.06 GeV, obtained at a scattering angle of 15.5 degrees. Our data include measurements from the quasielastic peak, through the nucleon resonance region, and beyond, and were used to determine the virtual photon cross-section difference sigma(1/2)-sigma(3/2). We extract the extended Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for the neutron in the range of four-momentum transfer squared Q2 of 0.1-0.9 GeV2.

Measurement of G(E(p))/G(M(p)) in e(-->)p---> e(-->)p to Q(2) = 5.6 GeV(2).

The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton G(E(p))/G(M(p)), which is an image of its charge and magnetization distributions, was measured at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) using the recoil polarization technique. The ratio of the form factors is directly proportional to the ratio of the transverse to longitudinal components of the polarization of the recoil proton in the elastic e(-->)p---> e(-->)p reaction. The new data presented span the range 3.5< Q(2)< 5.6 GeV(2) and are well described by a linear Q(2) fit. Also, the ratio sqrt[Q(2)] F(2(p))/F(1(p)) reaches a constant value above Q(2) = 2 GeV(2).

Dynamics of the 16O(e, e'p) reaction at high missing energies.

We measured the cross section and response functions for the quasielastic 16O(e,e'p) reaction for missing energies 25< or =E(m)< or =120 MeV at missing momenta P(m)< or =340 MeV/c. For 25<E(m)<50 MeV and P(m) approximately 60 MeV/c, the reaction is dominated by a single 1s(1/2) proton knockout. At larger P(m), the single-particle aspects are increasingly masked by more complicated processes. Calculations which include pion exchange currents, isobar currents, and short-range correlations account for the shape and the transversity, but for only half of the magnitude of the measured cross section.

Prenatal morphine exposure differentially alters TH-immunoreactivity in the stress-sensitive brain circuitry of adult male and female rats.

Previously, we demonstrated that exposure to morphine during gestation increases hypothalamic norepinephrine (NE) content and turnover rate in adult male rats and decreases these measures in adult females. To investigate the basis of these alterations, the present study examined the effects of prenatal exposure to morphine on tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity (TH-IR) in the brains of adult male and female progeny. In male rats, prenatal morphine exposure significantly increased the density of TH-IR in cells and fibers in the caudal paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) and locus coeruleus (LC), but had no effects in the lateral hypothalamus (LH). In female rats that were ovariectomized (OVX), prenatal morphine exposure significantly decreased the density of TH-IR in cells and fibers in the LC. Interestingly, an injection of estrogen in OVX control females reduced the mean optical density of TH-IR in the LC, but it was ineffective in drug-exposed females in the same brain region. Estrogen injections also reduced the mean optical density of TH-IR in the LH but not in the PVN of females, regardless of prenatal drug exposure. Thus, the present study suggests that prenatal morphine exposure induces long-term, sex-specific alterations in TH-IR in the PVN and LC of adult progeny.

Intercellular bridges between granulosa cells and the oocyte in the elasmobranch Raya asterias.

In the present ultrastructural study intercellular bridges, connecting somatic granulosa cells to oocyte, have been detected for the first time and their modifications have been followed during Raja oogenesis. Intercellular bridges make their first appearance in small previtellogenic follicles as connecting devices between small cells and the oocyte. Later on, when the follicular epithelium becomes polymorphic and multilayered, for the presence of small, large, and pyriform-like cells, intercellular bridges link the oocyte and the different granulosa cells. Intercellular bridges contain ribosomes, whorl of membranes, mitochondria and vacuoles. Such cytoplasmic components are present also in the cell apex of large and pyriform-like cells thus suggesting, in agreement with other species (Motta et al. J. Exp. Zool., 1996;276:223-241) they may flow toward the oocyte. In this regard the presence of intercellular bridges during the oogenesis of cartilagineous fish may represent a crucial event of the active cooperation between granulosa cells and the oocyte.

Study of an endemic goiter area in northern Campania.

The purpose of this paper was the determination, in the endemic goiter area of Teano (Caserta, Italy), of: i) The goiter prevalence in a group of 920 patients who attended the Outpatient Endocrinology Department; ii) The urinary iodine excretion in 150 adults (20-73-year-old) and 502 children (10-16-year-old; iii) The thyroid size in the 502 children; iv) The environmental iodine levels. Out of 920 patients a total of 750 (81.5%) goiters were detected. Out of these 750 cases, 415 (55.3%) were of grades 1b and 2, 335 (44.7%) of grades 3 and 4. A statistically significant association between goiter size and age was found (p less than 0.05). Laboratory data were entirely available for 506 goitrous patients. Serum TG levels was increased with goiter size and age, whereas there was a progressive decrease in mean serum TSH levels with increasing goiter size and age. The screening program performed on 502 schoolchildren aged 10 to 16 yr found a 68.3% prevalence of grade 1 goiter and a mean urinary ratio iodine/creatinine of 52 +/- 32 (SD) micrograms/g. A mean urinary ratio iodine/creatinine of 60 +/- 27 (SD) micrograms/g was reported in a sample of 150 adult inhabitants. Iodine measurements in water supplies showed levels equal to or less than 1 microgram/l. The area investigated can be identified as a moderate iodine deficient area and classified as grade 1-2 according to the Pan American Health Organization criteria.

Prolactin and TSH response to TRH and metoclopramide before and after l-thyroxine therapy in subclinical hypothyroidism.

The effects of the dopamine (DA) receptor antagonist metoclopramide on the plasma thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and prolactin (PRL) levels were studied in 8 patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (defined as absence of clinical signs of hypothyroidism with normal thyroid hormone levels, normal or slightly increased basal plasma TSH levels and increased and long-lasting TSH response to TRH) before and after l-thyroxine replacement therapy. Metoclopramide induced a significant (p less than 0.01) TSH release in the subclinical hypothyroid patients. Two weeks after l-thyroxine replacement therapy (50 micrograms/day), the TSH response to metoclopramide was completely blunted in subclinical hypothyroidism. In these patients a significant (p less than 0.01) inhibition of TSH response to intravenous thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) was also observed after treatment with thyroid hormone. In analogy to the TSH behavior, plasma PRL secretion in response to metoclopramide and TRH administration was significantly (p less than 0.05) inhibited in the subclinical hypothyroid patients after l-thyroxine replacement therapy.
