The measurement of anterior and posterior facial heights in a Nigerian population.

A biological norm for the facial heights of Nigerians has been established by cephalometric measurements. Except for lower posterior facial height (LPFH), the other measurements namely upper anterior facial height (UAFH), lower anterior facial height (LAFH) and upper posterior facial height (UPFH), are not age dependent.

Prevalence of bimaxillary protrusion in a Nigerian population.

Literally, bimaxillary protrusion means the protrusion of the two maxillae. This concept masks the real orthodontic problem of dual incisor proclination (DIP). In an attempt to clarify the identification of DIP a study has been made of biological norms for incisor proclination. In the Nigerian population, DIP is defined as occurring when the intercisal angle is of or less than 108 degrees. On this basis the prevalence of DIP was recorded as 20 per cent. Approximatively three-quarters of persons with DIP had a skeletal 1 antero-posterior jaw relationship.

A cephalometric study of incisor angulations in a Nigerian population.

This paper has the objective of establishing a standard norm for incisor angulations in a Nigerian population. The upper incisor angle to the Frankfort plane has a biological norm of between 119 degrees and 127 degrees, while the lower incisor angle (to the mandibular plane) is between 96 degrees and 104 degrees. The value for the interincisal angle is between 108 degrees and 116 degrees.

Overbite values in Nigerian children.

Overbite values in 650 Nigerian children aged 11-13 years have been measured using the Jackson method of overbite classification. The commonest overbite value in Nigerian children is 1 with a prevalence of 75.3 per cent which is followed by overbite 2 with a prevalence of 16.3 per cent. The study showed that Nigerians have a lesser overbite value compared with Caucasians.

The teaching of undergraduate orthodontics in Nigeria.

A description is given of the teaching of Orthodontics to Undergraduate Dental Students in Nigeria over the last 15 years.
