[Dynamics of the liver volume after its resection].

The dynamics of changes in the size of the liver after for localized lesions was studied in 42 patients. Both in benign and in malignant tumors the preoperative period was marked by compensatory hypertrophy of the lobes which were not involved in the tumor, and restoration of the size of the healthy hepatic parenchyma. In a period of up to 3 weeks after resection, sharp "blasting" enlargement of the remaining liver was noted due to increased filling with blood and edema of the organ. In the following periods up to 6 months, and sometimes of up to 12 months, the remaining part of the liver becomes smaller gradually to the preoperative size of the healthy parenchyma. The dynamics of the size of the liver after resection depends not on the character of the localized affection of the liver but on the volume of resection of the uninvolved parenchyma and the presence of concomitant diffuse changes in it.

[First experience in treatment of hepatic echinococcal cyst by percutaneous puncture drainage].

The article deals with the new possibilities of bloodless management of parasitic cysts of the liver by means of ultrasonic examination and computed tomography. The authors suggest a puncture-aspiration method of goal-oriented percutaneous drainage of a hydatid cyst which prevents possible complications. The method was applied in four patients with hydatid cysts of the right hepatic lobe. The outcomes in two cases were successful, the death of one patients was associated with the use of the method.

[Diagnosis and treatment of liver abscesses using computerized tomography].

Employment of computer-aided tomography and ultrasonic scanning in 74 patients with liver abscesses helped rapidly detect the condition and identify its type. The sensitivity of ultrasonic scanning in the diagnosis of liver abscesses has made up 90.77 percent, specificity 86.44 percent, in computer-aided tomography these values have been the same and made up 97.96 percent. Closed transcutaneous interventions monitored by computer-aided tomography and ultrasonic scanning in these patients helped reduce the number of complications from 48.78 to 27.27 percent, mortality rates from 29.27 to 3.03 percent, hospitalization periods by 13.21 days, i. e. by 20.6 percent, as against the patients treated by traditional surgical methods.

[Computed tomography in the diagnosis and treatment of surgical diseases of the liver].

Surgical diseases of the liver were detected by computed tomography in 110 patients. The aimed percutaneous puncture of focal neoplasms of the liver followed by cytological examination of the aspiration material was performed in 34 patients. The elaboration of puncture techniques of treatment of hepatic cysts and abscesses as well as the preoperative decompression of bile ducts in patients with mechanical jaundice is in progress.
