Electrophysiological and pharmacological properties of neurons within solid basal forebrain transplants in the rat brain.

Electrophysiological and pharmacological properties of neurons within solid basal forebrain transplants were studied in adult rats anesthetized with urethane. No specific topography of the neurons recorded was observed within the graft. The mean spontaneous activity of the grafted neurons (GNs) was relatively low (4.9 impulses/s) but not unlike that of other central neurons in situ. A large proportion of GNs fired with regular discharges, but other modes of discharge were also observed. A few rhythmically bursting GNs were recorded having a discharge pattern very much like that of the rhythmically bursting medial septal neurons. The responses of GNs to glutamate, gamma-aminobutyric acid, acetylcholine, serotonin and norepinephrine was fairly similar to those described in other central structures.

Contrasting properties of medial septal neurons projecting to hippocampus or interpeduncular nucleus in the rat.

The properties of neurons of the medial septal nucleus and of the nucleus of the diagonal band of Broca which project to hippocampus or to interpeduncular nucleus were compared in rats anesthetized with urethane. Neurons projecting to the interpeduncular nucleus had a slower conduction velocity and a lower spontaneous discharge rate. In contrast, their responses to various putative neurotransmitters (glutamate, GABA, acetylcholine) were similar. In a few cases, neurons projecting to both structures (i.e., with branched axons) were observed. Both septohippocampal and septointerpeduncular pathways are known to be partly cholinergic. Our results show that they originate from two independent populations of medial septal-nucleus of the diagonal band of Broca neurons with different physiologic properties.

Tangent simple systems method applied to a precise study of viscoelastic behaviour of human blood.

The tangent simple systems (TSS) method, proposed in (1), is applied in order to study the viscoelastic behaviour of human blood in transient flow for a rectangular low shear rate step. The tangent simple systems which were used are Maxwell liquids. These systems allow one to obtain plots of variations of instantaneous values of viscosity coefficient mu, elasticity modulus G and retardation time tau = mu/G of the studied blood samples, as a function of flow duration. Variations of both parameters mu and G versus time are represented by two exponential functions which involve three couples of parameters (mu o, mu infinity), (Go, G infinity) and (tau mu, tau G). These parameters can be considered as the characteristics of each blood sample. Another representation of the results, called the dual rheogram, is also indicated. The dual rheogram enables one to follow the evolution of the blood structure. Several examples of application of the TSS method to normal blood sample and to suspensions of artificially modified red blood cells (RBC) are given.

Transitional cell carcinoma of the anterior urethra.

We report a case of transitional cell carcinoma arising in the anterior urethra, a portion of the male urethra ordinarily lined by squamous epithelium. This is the 4th case of transitional cell carcinoma of the distal urethra to be reported. The neoplasm metastasized to superficial inguinal lymph nodes.

Splenic hamartoma, vascular type, with endothelial proliferation.

Vascular tumors of the spleen have shown a wide spectrum of histologic features. We present the case history of a 65-year old woman with weight loss, anemia and thrombocytopenia associated with a vascular tumor of the spleen. Grossly, the tumor appeared like the red pulp of the spleen. On microscopic examination, however, a papillary proliferation of the endothelial cells which caused narrowing of the lumina of newly-formed vessels was seen. The endothelial cells further showed multiple cytoplasmic projections with few junctions under electron microscopy. In spite of the morphology the tumor proved to be benign. This appears to be the first ultrastructural study of such type of vascular tumor.

Diagnosis of chordoma by cytologic examination of cerebrospinal fluid.

This is a case report of a 44-year-old man with a chordoma of the clivus that caused dysphonia, low back pain, and urinary and fecal incontinence. The diagnosis was made by cytologic study of the CSF, which demonstrated vacuolated malignant cells. The patient was treated with intrathecal methotrexate, dexamethasone, and radiotherapy. At autopsy extensive dissemination of chordoma was found at the base of the brain, in the ventricles, and in the leptomeninges of the spinal cord. This is the sixth reported case of intrathecal dissemination of a chordoma and the first diagnosed by cytology of the cerebrospinal fluid.

Tentative application of the tangent simple system method to the study of the viscoelastic behaviour of blood.

The method of the tangent simple systems is applied to the study of the viscoelastic behaviour of human blood in unstationary flow for rectangular steps and triangular ramps of shear rate. The tangent systems we utilize, Maxwell liquids, enable us to determine, at every point of the rheograms, apparent instantaneous values of retardation or relaxation time, viscosity coefficient and elasticity modulus of the studied blood samples, and to plot the curves of variation of these parameters as a function of flow duration. A qualitative interpretation of the results is proposed from data on the aggregation-disaggregation kinetics of red blood cells. Examples are given for samples of normal and pathological bloods.

Primary liposarcoma of bone: light and electron microscopic study.

The case history of a patient with primary liposarcoma of the humerus associated with a schwannoma of the radial nerve in the arm is described. Ultrastructurally, the neoplasm showed multiple and varied lipid droplets, dilated RER, mitochondria with electron-dense matrix, and microfilaments as the most prominent features. It is concluded, based on these ultrastructural observations, that liposarcoma of the bone is similar to pleomorphic liposarcoma arising in the soft tissues. This is the first ultrastructural study of a primary liposarcoma of the bone and the first reported association of this tumor with a schwannoma. The possible pathogenetic relationship between both tumors remains unknown.
