In order to determine the baseline state of oxidative stress indices in drug-free patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), we analyzed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and peripheral blood samples of 34 subjects in disease stages I-III, according to the Hoehn & Yahr scale, compared with controls. The results showed a highly significant increase in malondialdehyde content in CSF (p < 0.001) in the patients with PD. We also found significant differences in peripheral blood parameters between the two groups: malondialdehyde content was increased in patients with PD (p < 0.05), as was the activity of antioxidative defense enzymes, glutathione reductase, Cu, and Zn-superoxide-dismutase (p < 0.05). The production of a highly reactive oxygen species--superoxide radical (p < 0.05) was also increased. These findings indicated an important role of oxidative stress in PD evolution and progress. The increased levels of reactive oxidative species (malondialdehyde content and superoxide radical production) in peripheral blood, and excessive activity of protective enzymatic systems (glutathione reductase Cu, and Zn-superoxide-dismutase) could indicate an additional systemic reaction related to a chronic oxidative stress state in the brain.
We report herein the results of the cross-cultural adaptation and validation into the Serbian language of the parentís version of two health related quality of life instruments. The Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire (CHAQ) is a disease specific health instrument that measures functional ability in daily living activities in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). The Child Health Questionnaire (CHQ) is a generic health instrument designed to capture the physical and psychosocial well-being of children independently from the underlying disease. The Serbian CHAQ-CHQ were fully validated with 3 forward and 1 backward translations. A total of 139 subjects were enrolled: 79 patients with JIA (30% systemic onset, 28% polyarticular onset, 6% extended oligoarticular subtype, and 36% persistent oligoarticular subtype) and 60 healthy children. The CHAQ clinically discriminated between healthy subjects and JIA patients, with the systemic, polyarticular and extended oligoarticular subtypes having a higher degree of disability, pain, and a lower overall well-being when compared to their healthy peers. Also the CHQ clinically discriminated between healthy subjects and JIA patients, with the systemic onset, polyarticular onset and extended oligoarticular subtypes having a lower physical and psychosocial well-being when compared to their healthy peers. In conclusion the Serbian version of the CHAQ-CHQ is a reliable, and valid tool for the functional, physical and psychosocial assessment of children with JIA.
The aim of this study is the analysis of medical selection of drivers and candidates for car drivers. The examination included 41,561 drivers (36,008 candidates for car drivers sent to preliminary medical examination, 5,175 professional drivers sent to periodic medical examination and 378 drivers sent to special medical examination). At the preliminary medical examination, 1.5% of candidates for car drivers were declared to be incapable of driving and 8.4% of candidates had a limited driving ability. At the periodic medical examination, 8.2% of drivers were declared to be incapable to driving and 26% of drivers had a limited driving ability. At the special medical examination, 34.9% of drivers were declared to be incapable for driving and 54.3% of drivers had a limited driving ability. The reasons for driving incapability and for limited driving ability were the disturbances of psychologic-psychiatric and neurologic state, cardiovascular diseases, endocrine diseases and sight disturbances. In our opinion, medical selection of drivers and candidates for car drivers is a significant preventive measure of traffic trauma. New, more subtle methods for determination of the latent disturbances must be developed. Periodic medical examination for amateurs in the period between the preliminary medical examination and 65 years of age must biobligatory.
The aim of this study was to show the results of working ability estimation of the workers with arterial hypertension. The estimation included 313 workers with arterial hypertension estimated by Disability Commission during 1999. Arterial hypertension was a leading diagnosis in 30.9% cause of working ability estimation. The majority of workers belonged to the 41-60 years age group and were with arterial hypertension with complications on the fundus and on the heart. In the examined group the majority of workers was declared as first category invalid (35.8%), while 32.3% of hypertensive workers had to change the working place. The majority of the first category invalids were among the hypertensive workers from textile and chemical industry, as well as among the professional drivers. The changing of the working place was more frequently suggested to the workers in textile and metal industry and in printing firms. These results could be explained by the influence of professional noxious agents on the onset and development of arterial hypertension.
