[Natural killer cells and adenosine deaminase activity in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis].

Natural killer cells (NKC) were studied in 150 patients with first revealed destructive pulmonary tuberculosis, 100 with fibrocavernous and 50 with cirrhotic pulmonary tuberculosis by assessing their peripheral blood levels, cytotoxic activity and specific activity of adenosine deaminase. The latter 2 parameters were determined in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Different types of pulmonary tuberculosis were demonstrated to be accompanied by varying NKC depressions.

Adenosine Deaminase↗

[The effect of an infection due to the hepatitis B virus on the treatment results in breast cancer patients with bone metastases].

The study deals with the influence of persistent hepatitis B virus infection on immediate and end results of chemotherapy for breast cancer with bony metastases. The infection was shown to be associated with lower complete and partial remission rates, lower 3-year survival rate and higher rate of combination chemotherapy toxic effects such as nausea, vomiting and increased activity of aminotransferases.

[A modification of the immunoenzyme method of determining class A immunoglobulins].

The authors suggest a variant of enzyme immunoassay for measuring IgA in the blood and other biologic fluids. This method is based on the use of polystyrene balls, made in the USSR, as the solid phase; the balls are placed in biochemical tubes with a conic bottom. The sensitivity of the method is approximately 40 times superior to the widely known radial diffusion in gel. Use of polystyrene balls presensitized with antispecies antibodies helps cut down the time of the assay. The method is recommended for clinical laboratories that are intended for unsophisticated investigations.

[The combination of pneumocystosis with the hepatitis B virus carrier state in cancer patients].

In an oncological hospital the occurrence of the combined infection of patients with Pneumocystis carinii and hepatitis B virus was determined. Parasitological investigations for the presence of pneumocystosis were carried out by means of light and luminescent microscopy. Serological investigations for hepatitis B were made in the passive hemagglutination test. The examination of 171 patients with malignant tumors of the head and the neck and 47 patients with benign tumors revealed the presence of P. carinii in 45 patients (26.3%) and 4 patients (8.5%) respectively. Among the patients with malignant tumors, P. carinii and HBsAg were detected simultaneously in 9 patients, i. e. in 20% of all patients infected with P. carinii.

[Hepatitis C antibodies in groups at epidemic risk].

Blood sera from patients with acute virus hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, psychiatric and oncological diseases and pulmonary tuberculosis were studied for the presence of antibodies to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) and HBsAg with the use of solid-phase enzyme immunoassay. Anti-HCV were detected, respectively, in 9.1% and 67.8% of patients with acute virus hepatitis, in 5.7% and 6.1% of patients with sexually transmitted diseases, in 7.5% and 9.2% of psychiatric patients, in 7.5% and 13% with pulmonary tuberculosis and malignant tumors.

[The effect of a persistent viral infection on natural antitumor resistance].

The influence of persistent infection with Tahyna virus on the natural antitumor resistance of the hosts was studied in mature mice. The infection was shown to suppress the host natural antitumor resistance. The development of infection was accompanied by a decrease of natural killer cell cytotoxicity against YAC-1 cell line within 7 days after virus inoculation. In this period, the transplantation dose of tumor cells decreased from 10(1.73) to 10(0.82). This indirectly indicates a potential ability of viruses with immunosuppressive activity to increase the frequency of development of malignant tumors.

[Viruses in the feces of patients with viral hepatitis and other enterovirus infections].

Direct and immune electron microscopy was used to determine the frequency of finding of hepatitis A virus (HAV) and other viral agents in feces of patients in relation to the diagnosis and epidemiological situation. HAV-containing excretions from patients were analysed ultrastructurally. The highest frequency of HAV detection was established in patients in a water-borne and food-borne outbreak of hepatitis A (HA) and was 40.9% and 36.9%, respectively. In patients with HA diagnosis in the period of a seasonal rise of HA incidence HAV particles were found in 11.8%, and in the interseasonal period in 5%. Apart from HAV particles, in a small per cent of patients with HA diagnosis adenovirus and enterovirus particles were found. In patients with the disease diagnosed as hepatitis B (HB) only adenovirus and enterovirus particles were found. In contrast to the patients with HAV and HB diagnosis, the patients who were combined into a conditional "non-hepatitis" group were found to have, in addition to HAV (in the period of seasonal rise of HA incidence), adenovirus and enterovirus particles, also particles of astrovirus, coronavirus, and rotavirus. In fecal specimens of patients containing typical HAV particles structures were found resembling individual fragments of empty HAV particles, antibody-covered 17-22 nm and 27 nm spherical structures poorly reacting with antibody.
