[Significance of the occurrence of Aeromonas of various biotypes in the Third World].

In investigations carried out in the refugee camps of the Polisario (South Algeria), in the neighbourhood of the inhabitants of the waste disposal sites of Cairo and in the Ayoun el Atrous and Nema (Mauritania) regions also in the Bida and Minna hospitals. Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas spec. were repeatedly found in the investigated material. Therefore, it was of particular interest for us to investigate this type of organism.

[Water studies of inhabitants of refuse disposal sites in Cairo. 1].

In two waste disposal sites in Cairo, drinking water samples from springs, drinking vessels and kitchens were investigated. Total germ count lay seldom below one thousand and ten million pro ml. Apart from various faecal germs, Aeromonas hydrophila was also found. The high occurrence of diarrhoeal diseases among the inhabitants of the waste disposal sites can be traced with certainty to the extremely bad drinking water quality.

First evidence of the leptospirosis natural foci of the serotype Saxkoebing in Austria.

The authors examined serologically and bacteriologically 129 wild living small mammals (9 species) in Neumarkt, in Styria. A total of 17 animals were positive (all Microtus agrestis), of these 10 serologically (6 with L. saxkoebing, 3 with L. grippotyphosa and 1 with L. sorexjalna) and 7 bacteriologically. Of the 7 isolated leptospirae-strains one did not survive up to typing, the 6 remaining were identified as L. saxkoebing. It is the first evidence of the existence of leptospirosis natural foci of the serovar saxkoebing in Austria and at the same time the first isolation of L. saxkoebing from Microtus agrestis in Central Europe. The serovar saxkoebing, which BORG-PETERSEN described in the year 1942 (1943) and isolated from the yellow-neck mouse (Apodemus flavicollis) is found in most European countries (KATHE and MOCHMANN, 1967), may, however not be found in some regions although its main reservoir, the yellow-neck mouse dwells, as SEBEK (1965) and SEBEK and ROSICKY (1974) drew attention to in Czechoslovakia. In Austria, in fact L. saxkoebing antibodies have been demonstrated in wild- and also domestic-animals (SEBEK, et. al., 1973b, 1976a, 1976b), however, a reliable proof of these serovars was not found.

[Microbiological measurement of air-borne bacteria at an office building].

Following a request of a cleaning firm microbiological measurings were carried out in (large building) office areas. Air was supplied through an air conditioner and all windows were locked and could not be opened. Office employees were on the opinion that illness had increased and felt endangered by colleagues' germs. To find out the reason of these complaints measurings were conducted in various rooms and floors also in the air conditioner. It must be stressed that in spite the continuous air conditioning, almost all doors were open to the corridors. This, declared one of the questioned employees had above all a communication expansion effect.

[The pathogen spectrum of the conjunctiva of inhabitants of refuse disposal sites in Cairo. I].

In Cairo's waste disposal sites conjunctivitis is frequently found resulting from the burning process of plastic, paper, etc.. Recurrent secondary contamination of the conjunctiva by pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms often takes place; however, in certain germ species, the differentiation between pathogenic or non-pathogenic organisms within a damaged mucous membrane cannot be made. Furthermore, in this study, we have attempted to investigate germ reproduction during the application of PVP-eyedrops. However, our results cannot be conclusive because of the high environmental contamination, very low personal hygiene resulting from contaminated water and the constant exposure of samples to environmental contamination. Studies will be continued.

Different species of corynebacteria in human investigations in Cairo.

In investigations undertaken in Cairo of ocular smears the following Corynebacteria were isolated: Corynebacterium A4, Corynebacterium A5, Corynebacterium bovis, Corynebacterium aquaticum, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Corynebacterium equi, Corynebacterium F2, Corynebacterium kutscheri, Corynebacterium minutissimi, Corynebacterium renale, Corynebacterium xerosis, Corynebacterium Group I, Corynebacterium spec. (at present not classified). In this study the hitherto isolated species and possible human pathogenesis are discussed. Studies will be continued.

Serological investigations of the hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) in Styria. 2. Report.

From 1975 to 1982 investigations of 64 hedgehogs for anthropozoonoses and infectious diseases were carried out in all regions of Styria, Austria. The serological investigations revealed positive results against rickettsiosis, (Q-fever and RMSF-groups antigen), (ornithosis, toxoplasmosis, listeriosis, against adenoviruses and herpesvirus). Other studies by NOSEK et al. (1967); TROGER et al. (1976); KAASERER et al. (1976) and STUNZNER et al. (1976) report on the hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) as indicator for the distribution of infectious diseases. The present study should help to clarify this indicator function in a FSME (tick-borne encephalitis) and Q-fever region, furthermore; hedgehog trails of up to 9 km could be traced with the help of identification markings. Tick species, Ixodes hexagonus and Ixodes ricinus were found in all forms on the hedgehog. Ixodes hexagonus populations were frequently found in hedgehog's nests; of the large number found 128 were female, 89 male and 296 nymphs.

Rare transmission mode of FSME (tick-borne encephalitis) by goat's milk.

An infection presumed to have been transmitted by raw cow's milk was reported in Southern Styria (Remschnig locality), furthermore an FSME infection was demonstrated in two patients as having been transmitted by raw goat's milk. Both patients (an elderly couple) had no left their house or garden and had nourished themselves mainly with goat's milk. Neither patient had evidence of tick bites. The goats were severely parasitized with Ixodes ricinus; the place of dwelling lies in an FSME-natural foci region.

[Incidence of Coxiella burnetii and Rickettsiae from the RMSF group in the sub-Alpine region in Austria].

Investigations were carried out on small mammals to determine further distribution of Coxiella burnetii and Rickettsia RMSF-group in the Alpine and sub-Alpine regions. In altitudes of 1,200-2,400 m antibodies against Clethrionomys glareolus, Apodemus flavicollis, Sorex alpinus, Sorex minutus and Microtus agrestis were demonstrated. These findings emphasize that in the entire Alpine and sub-Alpine regions of Austria the occurrence of C. burnetii and RMSF-group rickettsia is to be expected.

[Endoparasites in game animals and the interaction with cattle].

In a study carried out over several years the interactions of the mutual ground of cattle and game, in particular the roe-deer is discussed. For the investigations and observations 3 different regions situated in low, middle and sub-Alpine altitudes were selected. The question of winter feeding and parasite control is also discussed and the changed situation for game in nature with regard to the economic factor of hunting and game.

[Waste management--a necessity for environmental health].

There can be no doubt about the necessity of waste management. Principles thereby are: Avoidance of waste, prevention of problematic substances, reduction of waste, utilization of waste and disposal of waste. As soon as we are in the position to put these principles into practice, is waste no longer a threatening problem for us and our environment.
