Comparison between treatment completers and noncompleters among dually diagnosed substance-abusing adolescents.

The psychiatric and demographic characteristics that may distinguish treatment completers from noncompleters among hospitalized adolescents with substance abuse and comorbid psychiatric disorders were examined. Affective and adjustment disorders were more prevalent among treatment completers whereas non-completers were more likely to be assigned a conduct disorder diagnosis. There were no differences between the groups with respect to demographic and legal status, education level and lifetime psychiatric diagnosis in the parents or caretakers, living arrangements, treatment history, and perception of treatment benefits. A higher percentage of treatment completers than noncompleters received psychotropic medications. The factors contributing to treatment termination as well as the clinical and research implications of the findings are discussed.

Drug abuse severity in adolescents is associated with magnitude of deviation in temperament traits.

Substance abusing adolescents were discriminated from normal controls on seven of the nine scales comprising the revised Dimensions of Temperament Scales. However, upon aggregating the scales into orthogonal dimensions using factor analysis, it was found that only activity level was associated with drug use severity. This behavioural trait was correlated with seven of 10 scales comprising the Drug Use Screening Inventory, including severity of substance use, behavior problems, psychiatric disorder, work, peer relationships and leisure activities.

Temperament deviation and risk for alcoholism.

Sons of alcoholics and nonalcoholics drawn from a community sample were compared across multiple dimensions of temperament. Sons of alcoholics scored higher on only behavioral activity level. This trait score was found to be unrelated to family environment. The implications of these findings for clarifying alcoholism vulnerability are discussed.
