Multifunctional aesthesiometer "TELMEST".

A multifunctional device "TELMEST" has been developed for checking of actual temperature and for testing the perception threshold of electric current, mechanical vibration and temperature. The operational microprocessor system delivers appropriate stimuli by applicators to the finger tips or to other areas of skin, and the sensory responses of the proband are displayed on the screen of the monitor and stored in the memory. The estimation of tegumental temperature and perception thresholds of the above mentioned sensory stimuli supply valuable indices of sensory and vascular dysfunctions due to exposure to mechanical vibration transmitted to the hands. The results of such tests are exemplified.

Computer Terminals

Biological accounts emerging from some kinds of electromagnetic waves in the environment.

Industrial use of induction heaters generating electromagnetic energy of frequencies below 9 kHz makes an exposure of their operators to magnetic field H of high intensity and to electric field E of relatively low intensity. The operators of such heaters have suffered repeatedly from infections in the upper respiratory tract and in the skin of the forearm. The experimental exposure of rats to E or H fields of frequencies of 10 Hz, 50 Hz or 1-45 kHz induced changes in growth rate of exposed animals and weight changes in the pituitary-adrenal glands. These results support the suggestion about the involvement of the endocrine system in the biological reaction to incident electromagnetic fields of VLF and ELF.

Adult

Ponderable indices in the offspring and nucleic acids quantity in endocrine glands of rats exposed to real and sham VDU screens.

Adult female and male Imp: DAK rats were exposed beneath a real VDU screen (Erl groups) loaded with light-green characteristics due to computation of trigonometric functions in a loop program from a microcomputer. The control animals were exposed beneath a sham screen (Esh groups), being the front glass of vacuum devoid cathode ray tube covered with a transparent celluloid sheet printed with light-green characteristics. The difference in body weight of foetuses from autopsied Erl and Esh females was due mainly to a one-day delay in the fecundation of Esh females. In other groups of Erl females, a prolongation of the oestrous cycle was found in comparison to that of the Esh females. In both Erl females and Erl males, a nonsignificant decrease of weight of anterior pituitary and adrenals was found. RNA quantity was augmented in the anterior pituitary of Erl females and DNA quantity was diminished in the hypothalamus of Erl males. The obtained results suggest the suppression of hypothalamo-hypophyseal function in rats exposed to a real VDU screen.
