[Osteosynthesis using plates in fractures of the lower end of the radius with anterior displacement].

A series of 55 distal radial fractures with anterior displacement have been fixed by an anterior plate. Results were excellent or good in 78 per cent, moderate in 18.1 per cent and poor in 3.7 per cent. There was no radio-clinical correlation. However when the reduction was good, clinical result was always good or excellent. On long-term follow-up, results were unchanged, except when an arthritis appeared (2 cases out of 14 with 5 or more years follow-up). Surgical technic must be strict to get a stable and anatomic reduction with all fragments maintained, to prevent tendinous and nervous complications and to allow an early mobilization. Most results were satisfactory.

[Repair of the acetabulum using a bone homograft preserved at the time of revision of total hip prostheses].

Between 1973 and 1982 the authors have used the preserved femoral head to allograft the affected acetabulum in 80 patients with loose total hip arthroplasties. The problems of reconstruction were various and several techniques were used. 65 cases have been reviewed with more than one year follow-up. No complication relating to the graft was found. All patients but 6 had dramatic relief of pain. Four new loosenings were encountered. The quality of the functional result was related to the pre-operative condition of the hip and the adequacy of the repair.

[Plate osteosynthesis of unstable fractures of the wrist with anterior displacement].

A shaped plate was used for internal fixation of 23 fractures of the anterior margin of the lower end of the radius and of 5 Smith's fractures. Exposure was improved by opening the carpal tunnel. The fractures were accurately reduced and temporarily maintained by K wires before application of the plate and screws. Satisfactory results were obtained.

Bone Plates↗

[Normal radiological aspects of a cemented total hip replacement].

The authors draw attention to the normal radiological appearances and the minor complication which may affect a cemented total hip replacement. Knowledge of these appearances enables the radiologist to define his attitude to the patient as well as his remarks on the case.

Hip Prosthesis↗

[Total replacement of ankylosed hips (author's transl)].

31 patients were operated on using total hip replacement. Most of them had suffered an ankylosis of the hip in malposition, resulting in pain in the lumbar spine and knee. The average post-operative mobility was of 75 degrees of flexion. Stability returned to normal one year after operation. The pain in the lumbar spine was consistently improved, and could be completely relieved in cases without spinal arthrosis if it was of short duration. Pain in the knee was completely relieved in cases where the procedure restored a satisfactory bio-mechanical state. 29 patients were reviewed, of which 25 were satisfactory.
