[Respiratory function in myasthenic children].

Results of lung function testing in myasthenic children to be thymectomized were compared with the results in healthy children. Data of adult myasthenic patients were also included for comparison. Lung function was within normal range. It seems reasonable to widen functional diagnostics in myasthenic children by occlusion pressure and minute voluntary ventilation measurements.

[Respiratory pattern during the first year of life in children after neonatal respiratory distress syndrome].

Spirography and lung mechanics were assessed in 82 infants (20--age 3 months, 28--age 6 months, 34--age 12 months) that had acute respiratory distress syndrome. During the first twelve months a decrease of normalized lung volumes, increase of respiratory drive and airway resistance were found. A significant correlation was found between Ti, Ttot and FRCpl, and body weight. A similar relation was found between respiratory frequency and the above mentioned. The normalized respiratory index depends on the value of FRC. The respiratory cycle timing and the normalized respiratory drive (VT/Ti/kg) are airway resistance related.

[Value of isocapnic hyperventilation in measuring bronchial reactivity in the child].

The bronchial reaction to isocapnic hyperpnoea in asthmatic children is described. There were two groups of children, asthmatic and non asthmatic and the following measurements were made: The vital capacity (CV). The maximum forced expired volume in one second FEV1 (VEMS). The airways resistance Raw (RVA). The Maximum expiratory flow at 75% of the VC, MEF75 (V75) before and after hyperventilating for one minute. In asthmatics the test leads to an increase in resistance (RVA) as well as a fall in FEV1 (VEMS) and V75. The fall in expiratory flow produced by isocapnic hyperpnoea is both a simple and a relevant test.

[Is bronchial hypersensitivity in early childhood genetically determined?].

In order to study the familial occurrence of bronchial hypereactivity (BH) the parents of infants with BH were evaluated. 47 pairs of parents of infants aged 10-33 months were studied. All infants following spastic bronchitis developed BH. All parents had bronchial reactivity assessed. All answered a questionnaire from which the following data were retrieved: family history, personal history, environmental data and smoking habits. A similar analysis was carried out on a group of 19 pairs of parents forming a control group, derived randomly from hospital personnel. In parents of children with BH a higher incidence of BH was found in comparison with the control chi 2 = 11.52; p less than 0.01). In 14 subjects a positive familial history was found. This did not differ from the control. The smoking habit was seen more often in the study group that in the control (chi 2 = 9.82; p less than 0.01). These results allow us to state that familial factors play a role in bronchial hypereactivity in early infancy.

[Respiratory pattern in newborn infants with acute respiratory insufficiency].

The respiratory pattern was evaluated in 32 newborn infants (21--premature infants). In 17 cases the cause of the respiratory insufficiency was the respiratory distress syndrome, in 15 pneumonias. Basing on registered spirograms the mean inspiratory time (Ti), the duration of the respiratory cycle (Ttot), time component (Ti/Ttot), respiratory frequency (f), normalized respiratory volume according to weight (Vt/kg) and Vt/Ti ratio were calculated. The authors did not find any differences in breathing pattern components between premature and at term infants nor between infants with RDS and pneumonias. In infants with RDS a shortened duration of inspiration was seen during the initial four days. Statistically significant differences were found in components of the respiratory pattern between studied and healthy infants.
