[Tissue and urokinase plasminogen activators (t-PA, u-PA) and their inhibitor PAI-1 in blood of patients with laryngeal neoplasms].

Plasminogen activators and inhibitors regulate a variety of physiological and pathological processes involved in tissue morphogenesis, cell differentiation, migration, cancer cell invasion and metastasis. Several reports have shown the decrease of fibrinolytic activity in the blood of cancer patients. In this study we measured the concentrations of tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA), urokinase plasminogen activator (u-PA), activity of plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) and euglobulin lysis time (ELT) in the blood of 20 men aged 42-75 years old with planoepitheliale larynx carcinoma, and 10 healthy persons in similar age. In this study the mean values of t-PA, u-PA concentrations, PAI-1 activity and ELT in the blood of patients with larynx carcinoma were similar to the examination results of healthy persons, but 40% of our cancer patients have increased activity of PAI-1.

[Plasma serine protease inhibitors in patients with liver cirrhosis].

In 28 patients with liver cirrhosis as compared with the control group decreased concentrations of alpha 2-antiplasmin, antithrombin III and activator plasminogen inhibitor were observed. Decrease of these inhibitors was lower in advanced stages of cirrhosis accompanied by hypoalbuminemia and hyperbilirubinemia.

[Effect of vinylsorb SS on the morphology and coagulability of blood during perfusion in vitro].

In the paper the changes appearing in in vitro during perfusion of citrated blood through a column filled with Vinylsorb SS in temperature of 22 and 37 degrees C were evaluated. In both temperatures there was a slight decrease of the number of leucocytes and thrombocytes, both in the examined and the control system. The remaining number of thrombocytes ensured hemostasia. The authors think that the main factor causing decrease of the number of morphotic elements of blood as well as activating slightly coagulation system was the effect of drains, a peristaltic pump, blood container and perfusion column and not the sorbent. Vinylsorb turned out to be a good and safe sorbent which should be applied in the process of hemoperfusion in people.

Thrombin/antithrombin III complex in patients with peripheral occlusive arterial disease.

Determinations of thrombin/antithrombin III complex (TAT) in human plasma with the new enzyme immunoassay (Enzygnost-TAT) were performed. The study group consisted of 36 patients aged 36-79 years suffering from peripheral obliterative arterial disease (POAD) comparing to control group. In patients the elevation of TAT level was detected. The analysis of increased TAT level in the relation to clinical atherosclerotic complications, the kind of treatment, the stage of POAD, the age of patients and the period after operation was done. The highest TAT complex seemed to be correlated with the advance of atherosclerotic process, with additional diseases such as arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus and performed operation. The "Enzygnost-TAT" assay can be useful for the detection of prethrombotic states without clinical symptoms of hypercoagulability and can be applied for clinical diagnosis.

[Polysorbates for hemoperfusion. The effect of polysorbate surface modification on morphology, coagulation, fibrinolysis, and kallikrein formation].

In the work the influence of surface sulfonated polymer sorbents with styrene-divinylbenzene (Vinylsorb SS) modified by amino acids upon the morphological picture of blood and proteins of the coagulation system was tested. Those sorbents do not exert a remarkable influence upon erythrocytes and coagulation proteins but they adsorb blood platelets, leucocytes and they activate prekallikrein system. Vinylsorb SS has the best influence because it adsorbs few platelets and activates prekallikrein system to the least extent.

The influence of modified polymeric adsorbents on blood morphologic elements and clotting factors.

The changes occurring in human blood after contact with hydrophobic sorbent Vinylsorb S and with ionosorbents Vinylsorb SS were studied. The investigations were carried out using static method at room temperature. The time of contact was 2 h. It was found that the effect of all sorbents upon the morphological elements of blood was small, only platelets were sorbed to a significant extent. The effect of sorbents upon the clotting proteins was also small and plasma hemostasis should not be affected. The sorbents containing sulphonic groups significantly activate kallikreinogenesis and may intensify shock symptoms.

Intravascular coagulation and fibrinolysis syndrome (ICF) in acute non-promyelocytic leukemia.

Three cases of acute non-promyelocytic leukemia complicated with intravascular coagulation and fibrinolysis syndrome were described. The blood clotting system and fibrinolysis studies in all 3 cases revealed a significant increase of FDP level and shortening of fibrinolysis time as well as a decrease of fibrinogen content in 2 cases. In one patient the recovery from ICF syndrome and complete acute leukemia remission of 8 months duration was obtained. The further 2 cases failed to improve: in one of them the ICF syndrome appeared in relapse of acute myelocytic leukemia after 2 years of its duration and in the remaining one acute undifferentiated cell leukemia of fulminating course developed in the patient suffering from bone marrow aplasia.
