[Effect of long term systemic steroid therapy on the cardiac muscle].

In asthmatic patients treated on a long term basis with steroids echocardiographic examination of the heart disclosed morphological and functional changes in the heart muscle. Such changes were not found in asthmatic treated occasionally with steroids. Differences between both groups depended on decreased contractibility of the heart muscle and concentric hypertrophy of the left ventricle present in asthmatic treated on a long term basis with systemic steroids.

Inhaled natural human interferon alpha induces bronchospastic reactions in asthmatics.

There is a relationship between viral infection and aggravation of bronchial asthma symptoms. Viruses belong to the strongest and fast acting inducers of interferon (IFN), which, in turn, may enhance histamine release from effector cells. We have administered IFN intrabronchially to 49 patients suffering from bronchial asthma. The impairment of lung ventilation with significant decrease of forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) have been observed in majority of the patients who inhaled crude or purified IFN preparations.

[Interferon as a bronchospastic factor in patients with bronchial asthma].

Twenty three asthmatics were examined during the symptoms free period. Each subject inhaled aerolised human interferon alpha (Hu IFN-alpha, Le) in increasing doses 4000 and 8000 units. IFN inhalation provoked significant decline in FEV1 (by 9.9% after the 1st dose and 6.6% after the 2nd dose on average). This results indicate that inhaled interferon induces bronchospastic reactions in asthmatics.

[Pulmonary ventilation after administration of lymphocytic supernatant to patients with chronic spastic bronchitis].

In 10 patients of chronic bronchitis culture of mononuclear cells were performed. Supernatant was applied in inhalation. Bronchospasm was not observed in spastic bronchitis patients but it was present in asthmatic patients. In 50% of chronic bronchitis patients the inhalation test to histamine was positive.

[Acute myocardial infarction as a consequence of anaphylactic reaction after administration of urovision].

The case of 52-year old patient was presented who developed urticaria and strong anginal pain after intravenous administration of uropoline. On the basis of typical clinical picture, electrocardiographical and biochemical changes acute myocardial infarction was recognised. It is thought to have developed as the consequence of anaphylactic reaction following intravenous administration of x-rays contrast substance.
