Cholinergic modulation of dopamine overflow in the rat neostriatum: a fast cyclic voltammetric study in vitro.

Stimulus-evoked dopamine overflow in rat neostriatal slices was determined using fast cyclic voltammetry. The dopamine efflux induced by intrastriatal stimulation increased with stimulus intensity and was found to be enhanced by more than 100% upon application of the dopamine uptake inhibitor nomifensine. The acetylcholine esterase inhibitor eserine concentration-dependently and reversibly depressed stimulus-induced dopamine overflow. This effect was mediated by both, muscarinic and nicotinic cholinergic receptors: the action of eserine was mimicked by cholinergic agonists (muscarine and nicotine) and the effects of these agonists were blocked by muscarinic and nicotinic antagonists (atropine and dihydro-beta-erythroidine). These experiments suggest that endogenous acetylcholine exerts an inhibitory control on stimulus-evoked (i.e. phasic) dopamine overflow in vitro by affecting striatal dopaminergic nerve terminals.

[Use of internal fixator in injuries of the thoracic and lumbar spine].

Between 1984 and 1989 51 patients with spinal traumata received surgical treatment by means of Fixateur interne. The results of patients' postsurgical check-up were as follows: Cases with incomplete neurological dysfunctions (levels Frankel B-D)-especially lumbar-showed improvements of neurological deficiencies up to three levels Frankel after emergency decompression and stabilization. The majority of cases with complete paraplegia-especially thoracic-did not subside. This holds true even for the results of a second check-up after about three years. A correlation between the degree of stenosis of the spinal canal and the neurological dysfunctions could not be established. The results of segmental stabilization by means of internal fixator and of definitive spondylodesis by means of autogenous spongiosa were positive, as was the spine proof and the patients' postsurgical function.

[50 years of strumectomy at the hospital München-Nymphenburg. Indication, surgical technic and mortality following the surgery of goiter].

A brief report is made on the experience relating to the current approach in strumectomies, and on the mortality and causes of death after strumectomy during the past 50 years at the Munich-Nymphenburg Hospital. A significant feature is the decrease in mortality to 0.39% and the disappearance of air embolism since the introduction of intubation anesthesia. Cardiovascular failure, pulmonary embolism and pneumonia were seen to occur as most frequent causes of death during all periods under survey.
