[Tinea capitis presenting as staphylococcal pyodermatitis of the scalp].

Two severe cases of pyoderma (staphylococcus aureus) of the scalp, resistant to appropriate antibiotic treatment, proved to be due to exotic dermatophytes (Trichophyton soudanense and Trichophyton violaceum) in two North African children living in France. Both cases exemplify the growing number of Tinea capitis due to anthropophilic species imported from Africa by immigrated populations, their sometimes atypical clinical presentation and their familial epidemiology. Fungal cultures and identification procedures are essential for the diagnosis and epidemiological investigation of such cases.

[Study of ampicillin sensitivity of 148 strains of Haemophilus influenzae isolated in 2 general hospitals].

During one year, by disk diffusion, we have studied in two general hospitals, the susceptibility to ampicillin of Haemophilus influenzae isolated from various clinical specimens, CSF (2 strains), blood (1 strain), ears (6 strains), eyes (18 strains), lower respiratory tract specimens (111 strains), genital specimens (7 strains), and various other specimens (3 strains). The beta-lactamase production was researched systematically with a chromogenic test. At all 148 strains of H. influenzae were examined. Drug resistance was observed for 18 strains (12.2%). All strains produced a beta-lactamase. The study of drug resistance of H. influenzae with the regard of the age showed an higher percentage of resistant strains isolated from children than the percentage of resistant strains isolated from adults. From children, 10 out of 50 strains (20%) were resistant to ampicillin, on the other hand 8 out of 98 (8.2%) strains isolated from adults were resistant to ampicillin.

[In vitro study of the pefloxacine-ceftriaxone combination against 18 strains of Acinetobacter].

The bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity of the pefloxacin-ceftriaxone combination was studied in Mueller-Hinton broth against 18 clinical strains of acinetobacter calcoaceticus var. anitratum by the checkerboard technique. The bactericidal activity was tested after 2, 4, 6 and 24 hours contact. MICs were 0.12 to 4 mg/l for pefloxacin and 2 to 64 mg/l for ceftriaxone. The bacteriostatic interaction of the antibiotics was synergistic for 5 strains (FIC index = 0.375 to 0.5) and additive for 13 strains (FIC index = 0.51 to 1). The bactericidal interaction was synergistic for 1 strain after 2 hours, 3 strains after 4 hours, 6 strains after 6 hours, and 12 strains after 24 hours. By the FBC technique at 24 hours, the combination was synergistic for 5 strains (FBC index = 0.375 to 5) and additive for 13 strains (FBC index = 0.51 to 1). No antagonism was detected. The combination is mainly additive but synergism is observed for some strains of acinetobacter. Ceftriaxone prevented the late regrowth noted with pefloxacin.

[Importance of the immotile cilia syndrome in E.N.T. field].

Associated with nasal secretion, the ciliary activity establish the first line of defense of respiratory mucosa. The primary pathology of the ciliary structures is not well known. Correlated with testing of the mucociliary transport, only the ultrastructural study could open this very interesting field. With a short review of the present status of the ineffective mucociliary clearance mechanisms, 9 new cases of immotile cilia syndrome, with or without situs inversus, are studied. Actually, the following anomalies seems to be significant : lack of one or two dyneïn arms, confusion of the central doublets' axis, ciliary roots anomalies. Despite that more information is needed, a good knowledge of this genetic errors is henceforth necessary for clinical and therapeutical applications especially to avoid undue surgical treatments.
