Community psychology as a model for the new private practice of psychology.

The continuing increase in graduates from training programs in psychology when coupled with the decline of publicly supported mental health facilities or funds will lead more psychologists to offer services privately. At the same time, the private practice of psychology is changing, and a community psychology model may be useful in the development and offering of services. The community concepts of prevention, crisis intervention, and consultation can be related to family, work, and health in the development of some of the services that will become more prevalent in private practice.

Poor memory: a case report.

The patient and the author of this case report are the same person. In September 1974 I had a cardiac arrest, and because of anoxia, the arrest resulted in some right-sided brain damage. The brain damage led to some minor physical and perceptual problems, but the most important result was partial loss of past memory and strongly impaired present memory. This report will be concerned with the effects of poor memory on cognition, personality, and interpersonal relationships based on the observations I have made during the period in which my memory was impaired. Of course, the emotional and personality reactions are somewhat related to my past personality, but some may be expected generally when poor memory is present. The effect on cognitive functioning is more likely to be a general finding. I also will describe the course of my rehabilitation over a 2-year-period, and I will make some suggestions about rehabilitation to patients and therapists.

Stability of polyoma DNA sequences and virus-coded proteins during tumor formation.

To determine the stability of polyoma viral DNA in transformed rat cells during their growth in vivo, we compared the state and arrangement of polyoma virus DNA sequences in virus-transformed rat cell lines before and after their passage in vivo. In cell lines from 12 independent tumors induced by the inoculation of animals with three different transformed cell lines, we could detect no significant changes in the arrangement of viral DNA sequences associated with the in vivo passage of these cell lines. In 13 of 14 tumor cell lines examined, the pattern of polyoma virus tumor antigens, characterized by the presence of the polyoma virus large, middle, and small tumor antigens, was unchanged.

Animals

Familial amyloidosis of Ostertag.

A 23 year old Englishman presented with keratoconjunctivitis sicca and was found to have systemic amyloidosis. Five members of his family in two generations also had non-neuropathic amyloid particularly affecting the kidneys. This conforms to the Ostertag type of hereditary amyloidosis. Amyloid deposits in the proband showed permanganate-sensitive Congophilia and positive immunofluorescence staining for P component, but were negative for amyloid A and prealbumin. These observations suggested that the fibril protein in this patient was immunochemically distinct from the amyloid fibrils characterized hitherto.

Characterization of polyoma viral DNA sequences in polyoma-induced hamster tumor cell lines.

The polyoma (PY) viral DNA sequences present in a series of hamster tumor cell lines were evaluated using the blotting technique of Southern ((1975) J. Mol. Biol. 98, 503-517). Remarkably, no cell line contained an intact distal portion of the early gene region which encodes a portion of the large T antigen. All cell lines examined contained the PY DNA Bum I fragment which contains most of the genetic information encoding PY small and middle T antigens, as well as the origin of viral DNA replication. These results provide an explanation for our previous observation that PY virus-induced hamster tumors do not contain the large species of T antigen.
