Ritodrine in the treatment of preterm labor: second Danish Multicenter Study.

In a randomized trial intramuscular ritodrine followed by oral ritodrine treatment and bed rest was compared with placebo and bed rest in the treatment of 99 cases of preterm labor. The ritodrine treatment did not have a statistically significant effect on birth weight, gestational age, or the incidence of low birth weight. However, it did inhibit preterm labor in the initial stage, resulting in a gain of a few days to a few weeks in length of gestation. This gain may be valuable. Where necessary, advantage can be taken of it to transfer the mother before delivery to a more specialized hospital with a neonatal intensive care unit or to administer steroid treatment to promote fetal lung maturation. No serious side effects were recorded. The intramuscular route is recommended because large fluid infusions are avoided and treatment can easily be started before the patient is transported from home to hospital.

Clinical Trials as Topic↗

Treatment of vaginal candidosis with tioconazole 2% vaginal cream.

Six hundred and three women in a contraceptive clinic were examined for the presence of C. albicans in the vagina and questioned about symptoms. Twenty-nine women with C. albicans accompanied by symptoms were treated with tioconazole 2% in a vaginal cream for 3 days, repeated once after an interval of 1 week. The mycological cure rate was 88.5%. At the same time, 34 women with vaginal C. albicans but without symptoms were examined. The spontaneous cure rate in these patients was 58.8%. In the symptomatic group, rectal C. albicans was observed in 56.5% of patients before treatment. After vaginal treatment, a rectal cure rate of 100% was achieved, but with a recurrency frequency after 2-4 weeks of 17.4%. Comparative vaginal recurrency frequency was 10.3%. Three were not cured. The method used has shown itself to be very acceptable for the patient and to have a cure frequency that is fully equal to previously used, longer lasting treatments.

The incidence of Candida albicans in the vagina of "healthy young women". How often do they have symptoms? Possible etiological factors.

The frequency of vaginal Candida albicans was investigated in 603 healthy women at a "Contraceptive Clinic". Swabs were taken from the rectum, which is thought to be the reservoir and thereby the cause of reinfection of the vagina with Candida albicans. A neat correlation exists. Women who have received antibiotics within 3 months prior to the investigation have significantly more frequent bouts of candidosis. The same is true of with users of "the pill" and women using sanitary towels only for menstrual protection, compared with women using tampons only. The women were asked about bathing facilities and the frequency with which they use soap and water for washing of the external genitalia. The latter showed no difference, while there was an apparently increased frequency of positive swabs for Candida albicans in women who were "spot" washing, compared with those who took a shower and those who took a bath. This difference was not significant, however.
