Enhancement of transforming growth factor beta 1 expression in the rat pancreas during regeneration from caerulein-induced pancreatitis.

Synthesis of extracellular matrix components is enhanced in the rat pancreas during regeneration from caerulein-induced pancreatitis. To study the involvement of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF beta 1), one of the most potent modulators of the extracellular matrix, in the process of pancreatic regeneration we examined the expression of this gene on the transcript and protein level. Pancreatic RNA was extracted from rats killed 0 h, 12 h, 24 h, 2, 3 and 7 days after induction of caerulein pancreatitis. Transcript levels for TGF beta 1 were measured by slot-blot analysis and mRNA in situ hybridization. Total amount of TGF beta 1-protein was measured using a radioligand binding assay. TGF beta 1 protein was increased twofold after 24 h and 48 h and returned to control values 7 days after induction of pancreatitis, TGF beta 1-mRNA reached maximal values (3-fold over controls) after 2 days. The largest amount of TGF beta 1-mRNA was found in pancreatic acinar cells and in stromal cells. In summary, expression of TGF beta 1 in acinar and stromal cells of the rat pancreas is enhanced during regeneration from caerulein-induced pancreatitis, which may indicate an involvement of TGF beta 1 in the regulation of extracellular matrix regeneration in the rat pancreas after caerulein-induced pancreatitis.

[Acoustic evoked discrimination potentials in early childhood].

In 68 children without brain-disease, 3 months to 8 years of age, auditory non-target event-related potentials have been elicited. A 500 Hz-tone of 500 ms duration served as frequent stimulus, while a seldom (20%) and irregularly offered 2000 Hz-tone of the same duration produced the event-related potentials. Comparison between the four kinds of successively recorded potentials (100% 500 Hz, 80% 500 Hz with 20% 2000 Hz, and 100% 2000 Hz) led to the identification of potentials reflecting discrimination of the two sounds, since their latencies significantly differed in the event-related potential from the other three kinds of potentials. Latencies of the peaks in the event-related potentials showed evidence of maturation with increasing age. Normal values with 2.5-sigma border of the latencies of the event-related peaks were compiled bringing about the possibility to use the method in the clinical work-up of children with brain diseases.

[The open door at a psychiatric admission unit].

In spite of our determination to do so, we did not succeed in keeping an open door in a psychiatric admission unit treating patients of all kinds except during one third of the investigation period of 2.75 years duration. A total of 11.3% of all admissions prompted a transitory closing of the door, mostly for 3-4 days. A comparison with a control group shows an over-representation of young, schizophrenic, and organically damaged persons among these patients; in the case of the organics the closing of the ward was of substantially longer duration. The most frequent reason for closing the unit was the apprehension the patient would leave the hospital. However, as these patients were not dangerous towards themselves or against others, there may have been social rather than strictly medical grounds for this action. A short hospitalization time along with a high turn-over of the patients affect the possibility of influencing them on a relational level and make it thus more difficult to keep the door of an acute admission unit permanently open.
