Entangling strings of neutral atoms in 1D atomic pipeline structures.

We study a string of neutral atoms with nearest neighbor interaction in a 1D beam splitter configuration, where the longitudinal motion is controlled by a moving optical lattice potential. The dynamics of the atoms crossing the beam splitter maps to a 1D spin model with controllable time dependent parameters, which allows the creation of maximally entangled states of atoms by crossing a quantum phase transition. Furthermore, we show that this system realizes protected quantum memory, and we discuss the implementation of one- and two-qubit gates in this setup.

Roton-maxon spectrum and stability of trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates.

We find that pancake dipolar condensates can exhibit a roton-maxon character of the excitation spectrum, so far observed only in superfluid helium. We also obtain a condition for the dynamical stability of these condensates. The spectrum and the border of instability are tunable by varying the particle density and/or the confining potential. This opens wide possibilities for manipulating the superfluid properties of dipolar condensates.

Quantum computing with spatially delocalized qubits.

We analyze the operation of quantum gates for neutral atoms with qubits that are delocalized in space, i.e., the computational basis states are defined by the presence of a neutral atom in the ground state of one out of two trapping potentials. The implementation of single-qubit gates as well as a controlled phase gate between two qubits is discussed and explicit calculations are presented for rubidium atoms in optical microtraps. Furthermore, we show how multiqubit highly entangled states can be created in this scheme.

Creation of a dipolar superfluid in optical lattices.

We show that, by loading a Bose-Einstein condensate of two different atomic species into an optical lattice, it is possible to achieve a Mott-insulator phase with exactly one atom of each species per lattice site. A subsequent photoassociation leads to the formation of one heteronuclear molecule with a large electric dipole moment, at each lattice site. The melting of such a dipolar Mott insulator creates a dipolar superfluid, and eventually a dipolar molecular condensate.

Dynamics of dark solitons in elongated Bose-Einstein condensates.

We find two types of moving dark soliton textures in elongated condensates: nonstationary kinks and proper dark solitons. The latter have a flat notch region and we obtain the diagram of their dynamical stability. At finite temperatures the dynamically stable solitons decay due to the thermodynamic instability. We develop a theory of their dissipative dynamics and explain experimental data.

Quantum phases of dipolar bosons in optical lattices.

The ground state of dipolar bosons placed in an optical lattice is analyzed. We show that the modification of experimentally accessible parameters can lead to the realization and control of different quantum phases, including superfluid, supersolid, Mott insulator, checkerboard, and collapse phases.

Observation of phase fluctuations in elongated Bose-Einstein condensates.

The occurrence of phase fluctuations due to thermal excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is studied for a variety of temperatures and trap geometries. We observe the statistical nature of the appearance of phase fluctuations and characterize the dependence of their average value on temperature, number of particles, and the trapping potential. We find pronounced phase fluctuations for condensates in very elongated traps in a broad temperature range. The results are of great importance for the realization of BEC in quasi-1D geometries, for matter wave interferometry with BECs, as well as for coherence properties of guided atom laser beams.

Entanglement criteria for all bipartite Gaussian states.

We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for separability of Gaussian states of bipartite systems of arbitrarily many modes. The condition provides an operational criterion since it can be checked by simple computation. Moreover, it allows us to find a pure product-state decomposition of any given separable Gaussian state. We also show that all bipartite Gaussian states with nonpositive partial transpose are distillable.

Classification of mixed three-qubit states.

We introduce a classification of mixed three-qubit states, in which we define the classes of separable, biseparable, W, and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states. These classes are successively embedded into each other. We show that contrary to pure W-type states, the mixed W class is not of measure zero. We construct witness operators that detect the class of a mixed state. We discuss the conjecture that all entangled states with positive partial transpose (PPTES) belong to the W class. Finally, we present a new family of PPTES "edge" states with maximal ranks.

Feynman's path-integral approach for intense-laser-atom interactions.

Atoms interacting with intense laser fields can emit electrons and photons of very high energies. An intuitive and quantitative explanation of these highly nonlinear processes can be found in terms of a generalization of classical Newtonian particle trajectories, the so-called quantum orbits. Very few quantum orbits are necessary to reproduce the experimental results. These orbits are clearly identified, thus opening the way for an efficient control as well as previously unknown applications of these processes.

Bound entanglement and continuous variables

We introduce the definition of generic bound entanglement for the case of continuous variables. We provide some examples of bound entangled states for that case, and discuss their physical sense in the context of quantum optics. We raise the question of whether the entanglement of these states is generic. As a by-product we obtain a new many parameter family of bound entangled states with positive partial transpose. We also point out that the "entanglement witnesses" and positive maps revealing the corresponding bound entanglement can easily be constructed.

Bose-einstein condensation in trapped dipolar gases

We discuss Bose-Einstein condensation in a trapped gas of bosonic particles interacting dominantly via dipole-dipole forces. We find that in this case the mean-field interparticle interaction and, hence, the stability diagram are governed by the trapping geometry. Possible physical realizations include ultracold heteronuclear molecules, or atoms with laser induced electric dipole moments.
