Transverse modulational instability of partially incoherent soliton stripes.

Based on the Wigner distribution approach, an analysis of the effect of partial incoherence on the transverse instability of soliton structures in nonlinear Kerr media is presented. It is explicitly shown that for a Lorentzian incoherence spectrum the partial incoherence gives rise to a damping which counteracts, and tends to suppress, the transverse instability growth. However, the general picture is more complicated and it is shown that the effect of the partial incoherence depends crucially on the form of the incoherence spectrum. In fact, for spectra with finite rms-width, the partial incoherence may even increase both the growth rate and the range of unstable, transverse wave numbers.

Current dynamics during disruptions in large tokamaks.

Self-consistent modeling of the evolution of the plasma current during disruptions in large tokamaks is presented, taking into account both the generation of runaway electrons and their backreaction on the electric field. It is found that the current profile changes dramatically, so that the postdisruption current carried by runaway electrons is much more peaked than the thermal predisruption current. Although only a fraction of the thermal current is converted into runaway electrons, the central current density increases significantly for typical parameters in JET and ITER. It is also shown that the radial runaway profile can easily become filamented in the radial direction.

Features of modulational instability of partially coherent light: importance of the incoherence spectrum.

It is shown that the properties of the modulational instability of partially coherent waves propagating in a nonlinear Kerr medium depend crucially on the profile of the incoherent field spectrum. Under certain conditions, the incoherence may even enhance, rather than suppress, the instability. In particular, it is found that the range of modulationally unstable wave numbers does not necessarily decrease monotonically with increasing degree of incoherence and that the modulational instability may still exist even when long wavelength perturbations are stable.

Influence of higher-order dispersion on modulational instability and pulse broadening of partially incoherent light.

The Wigner-Moyal equation for the Wigner distribution of a partially incoherent optical wave field propagating in dispersive and nonlinear media has been generalized to include the effects of both arbitrary order of dispersion and arbitrary nonlinearity. The theory predicts partial incoherence to enhance the pulse broadening during linear wave pulse propagation. Furthermore, an application of the theory to the modulational instability of constant amplitude waves shows how higher-order dispersion affects the instability growth rate.

Eigenvalues of the Zakharov-Shabat scattering problem for real symmetric pulses.

The classical problem of determining the solitons generated from symmetric real initial conditions in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation is revisited. The corresponding Zakharov-Shabat scattering problem is solved for real and symmetric double-humped rectangular initial pulse forms. It is found that such real symmetric pulses may generate eigenvalues with nonzero real parts corresponding to separating soliton pulse pairs. Moreover, it is found that the classical formula relating the number of eigenvalues to the area of the pulse is not always correct.

Axial magnetic fields in relativistic self-focusing channels.

Based on an improved cavitation model for the electron dynamics, an exact analysis is presented of the generation of axial magnetic fields in the relativistic self-focusing channels produced by circularly polarized light in plasmas. Two kinds of waveguiding structures are considered: single-channel waveguides and plasma filaments surrounded by a light field. It is found that due to large electron density gradients in the cavitation plasma, magnetic fields of megagauss values with opposite directions separated by a neutral sheet, where the magnetic field passes through zero, can be produced.

Propagation properties of chirped soliton pulses in optical nonlinear Kerr media.

An investigation is made of the formation of a single soliton, or a pair of solitons, from initially nontransform limited pulses in a nonlinear Kerr medium having anomalous dispersion. A qualitative physical explanation is given for the formation of soliton pairs. Approximate solutions for the amplitudes and the velocities of the generated solitons are established and corroborated by numerical solutions of the Zakharov-Shabat eigenvalue problem.

Axisymmetric relativistic self-channeling of laser light in plasmas.

By using an improved cavitation model, relativistic self-channeling structures are derived, which make it possible to propagate laser powers exceeding the critical one for self-focusing. A propagation mode for high laser power is also presented which is qualitatively different from those in the weakly relativistic case. Structural stability analysis shows that stable self-wave-guide propagation can take place.

Statistical theory for incoherent light propagation in nonlinear media.

A statistical approach based on the Wigner transform is proposed for the description of partially incoherent optical wave dynamics in nonlinear media. An evolution equation for the Wigner transform is derived from a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with arbitrary nonlinearity. It is shown that random phase fluctuations of an incoherent plane wave lead to a Landau-like damping effect, which can stabilize the modulational instability. In the limit of the geometrical optics approximation, incoherent, localized, and stationary wave fields are shown to exist for a wide class of nonlinear media.

Approximate solutions of two-way diffusion equations.

In this paper, a general and systematic scheme is formulated for finding approximate solutions of two-way diffusion equations. This expansion scheme is valid for arbitrary mean-free path and can be carried out to any desired accuracy. Its potential is demonstrated by constructing approximate solutions for two problems concerning the kinetics of an electron beam, and the accuracy is found to be very good even when only a few terms are included in the expansion. The approximate solutions found are compared with numerical calculations and previous analytical work in the literature.

Electromagnetic energy penetration in the self-induced transparency regime of relativistic laser-plasma interactions.

Two qualitatively different scenarios for the penetration of relativistically intense laser radiation into an overdense plasma, accessible by self-induced transparency, are presented. In the first one, penetration of laser energy occurs by solitonlike structures moving into the plasma. This scenario occurs at plasma densities less than approximately 1.5 times the critical one (depending on ion mass). At higher background densities, laser light penetrates only over a finite length which increases with incident intensity. In this regime the plasma-field structures represent alternating electron (and, on longer time scales, ion) layers separated by about half a wavelength of cavitation with concomitant strong charge separation.

Multifilament structures in relativistic self-focusing.

A simple model is derived to prove the multifilament structure of relativistic self-focusing with ultraintense lasers. Exact analytical solutions describing the transverse structure of waveguide channels with electron cavitation, for which both the relativistic and ponderomotive nonlinearities are taken into account, are presented.

Threshold of induced transparency in the relativistic interaction of an electromagnetic wave with overdense plasmas

An exact analytical investigation of the stationary solutions describing the interaction between high-intensity laser radiation and an overdense plasma is presented. Both the relativistic and striction nonlinearities are taken into account, and their joint action gives rise to a solitary solution. This solution clearly shows that there exists an inherent limit of the induced transparency on the density of the overdense plasma in order to obtain a stationary physical solution. Furthermore, it is found that the striction nonlinearity tends to create a strong peaking of the plasma electron density, which suppresses the laser penetration and significantly enhances the threshold intensity for induced transparency.
