[Teaching training: an important skill for undergraduate students].

This work describes the structure of the course "Pedagogical Training" introduced in the new Nursing Curriculum of Minas Gerais Federal University College of Nursing. We believe that attending this pedagogical course provides students with the opportunity to be the active subjects and architects of their own knowledge, which will make it possible for them to deliberately develop their roles as educators and perform in a critical manner in view of the reality of those involved. It can be said that pedagogical training constitutes one of the possibilities to think about, reflect on and construct the teaching-learning process during both the moments experienced in class and those in the fields of clinical practice.

[Open doors: new possibilities in psychiatric nursing teaching].

This paper describes a teaching experience in psychiatric nursing at an open mental health care service. Students' discourses show how meaningful and rich an experience it has been for their careers. Participating in this training has allowed them to learn the role of nurses, to improve assistance by applying both theory and practice as well as to recognize people with mental disorders as ordinary citizens.

[Educational program for HIV/AIDS prevention].

The objective of this study is the evaluation of an educative program intended to bring scientific knowledge to common sense persons about HIV/AIDS prevention. A participative study was carried out with clients of a health center. To the development of the program, an educative game was used. It had 30 cards with verbal and non-verbal messages about the topic. The discussion about those messages were observed and recorded. The analysis of the data made possible the elaboration of themes categories: "men, women and preservative", "beliefs, attitudes, feelings and behavior", "pursuing meaning of life", "media and HIV/IDS". The evaluation of the program by the participants shows attainment to its objectives. The game was considered excellent to start the discussion about the topic and a good educational tool, in which knowledge raises freely from the encounter of scientific and common sense perspectives.

Sociocultural aspects of schistosomiasis mansoni in an endemic area in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

A study to determine the sociocultural factors influencing knowledge, attitudes, and practices of individuals from a small community toward Schistosoma mansoni infection was carried out in an endemic area in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The study used qualitative approaches to collect data from school-aged children and teachers. Specific findings were that the individuals interviewed were aware of the disease, but also held inaccurate popular beliefs about transmission. Misconceptions coexisted with accurate knowledge both in children and teachers. The disease was not seen as a major health problem and does not affect their activities since it does not cause severe symptoms in most of the individuals. Although the majority of the participants relate transmission to water and lack of sanitation, they do not take any preventive measures since their subsistence is highly dependent on irrigation, farming, fishing, and other essential work that is directly related to water activities. The authors discuss the development of a health education program based on the knowledge and perception of individuals about the disease and its determinants as being important for the context and behavioral change.
