Experimentally induced otitis and audiogenic seizure in the mouse.

Audiogenic seizures can be induced in genetically non-susceptible 17-day-old mice (Rb/3 strain) with various results. Priming only induces 9% of seizures, auditory insulation 3,8%, while experimental otitis leads to 79%. The hypothesis concerning disuse supersensitivity subsequent to acoustic deprivation was not confirmed by the experiment. However, modification of acoustic transmission at middle ear level induced by otitis or ear physical damage during the maturation period, exposes the upper nervous centers to intense stimulation to which the reaction is a recruiting response.

[Audiometry and cytological study of the external hair cells of 4 strains of mice].

The auditory apparatus of two strains of mices with normal audition is compared to that of two substrains with genetic auditory impairment. Audiometry by auditory evoked potentials at the inferior collicular level indicates complete deafness for one substrain and a 40-48 dB S.P.L. hearing loss at all frequencies for the other. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy demonstrate hair impairment of the external hair cells and degeneration of the chondriosome for the two deaf substrains.

[Mouse auditory sensitivity as measured by averaged evoked potentials].

The audition of four strains of mice was determined with summated auditory evoked potentials at the inferior colliculus level. One of these strains was completely deaf. For the 3 others a specific auditory sensitivity was found with statistically different thresholds. But, for these, the best sensitivity is around 16 kHz. Two of them show a flattening of the curve between 32 and 64 kHz. This range corresponds to the ultrasounds emitted by the pups.
