[A written nursing care plan--a tool for good care?].

The Paihola Hospital is an institutional psychiatric care unit of the North Karelia Hospital District. The hospital has under several years developed nursing documentation by education and peer review. Documentation has improved especially in the following areas: 1) the patient and his family participate in planning, implementing and evaluating the care more than before, 2) data collecting has become more extensive and the patient's total situation is taken into consideration so that his resources, strengths, hopes and dreams will be taken into account in the nursing care plan, 3) the nursing diagnosis has helped us to detach from the medicine and problem centricity, 4) tangible goals and means are always agreed upon together with the patient (= care contract) if it is possible, 5) daily documentation has become evaluative; progress evaluations and final evaluation are a natural part of nursing documentation.

[Nursing college organizational functions. Nursing college management and director evaluated by its faculty].

The aim of this research was to eludicate functioning of a nursing college according to perspective of teachers. The teachers were asked to evaluate the procedures of the institute and personnel and goals of functioning. The aim was to eludicate the existing basic principles and the bodies of knowledge among the teachers. The research was made as a case study in a average-sized nursing college during autumn 1992. A questions blank was sent to all the teachers (N = 68) and the questions were non-structured. The blank was returned by 39 teachers. Their answers were analyzed by using qualitative methods. The results of this research refer that a nursing college resembles Mintzberg's (1979) description of professional bureaucracy. The teachers way of thinking is typical among well-educated experts, who work quite independently (and alone) in relation to their colleagues. Despite of this they work very closely with their clients, who are students. The teachers thought that they are experts in pedagogics, but not in the knowledge of science of nursing. Their opinions about the position of students and the function of the institute were controversial. The students were seen either as self-directing gatherers or passive receivers of information. Most of the teachers were dissatisfied with leadership and cooperation of the organization.

[Opinions of student nurses and student care assistants concerning adequate care of a patient with dementia, and how to learn it].

The research investigated the views which the student nurses and the student care assistants had received from their studies concerning the care of demented patients. It also dealt with the opinions they had received about the good care of a demented patient. The data was gathered by interviewing 11 student care assistants and 14 student nurses who were to finish their studies within a month. The data was analyzed by using qualitative analytical methods. The student care assistants emphasized the care itself and the patient more than the student nurses did. The student care assistants emphasized the rehabilitation and the physical care. While evaluating their studies, the student nurses considered the teaching in the nursing school in a more negative way than the student care assistants. Both groups regarded the prevailing nursing practice as a difficulty in learning the good care of the demented patients.
