Isokinetic torque levels for knee extensors and knee flexors in soccer players.

The knee extensor and knee flexor strengths were measured isokinetically (30 degrees, 180 degrees/s) and isometrically with a Cybex II device in three groups of male soccer players (national team players, n = 13; division I, n = 15; division IV, n = 180) and a group of nonsoccer players (n = 32). There were difference in strength between soccer players and nonsoccer players and between players from different divisions. Correction for body surface area did not affect the results. The knee flexor/knee extensor ratio (H/Q ratio) was significantly higher for soccer players than for nonsoccer players. The fast-speed/slow-speed ratio for knee extensors was higher for nonsoccer players and for national team players than for players from divisions I and IV.

Bloom syndrome in a Mexican mestizo girl.

A 3-year-old girl with Bloom syndrome is described. She exhibited stunted growth of prenatal onset and defective immunity, but the typical skin manifestations were absent. Cytogenetic analysis revealed a 46,XX complement, 12.2% of metaphases with at least a structural aberration, and a ten-fold increase in the sister-chromatid exchange rate. Leukocyte beta-glucuronidase activity was reduced to about 1/3; the significance of this finding is not clear. The present observation demonstrates the variable expression of the disorder probably depending on ethnic and constitutional factors.

De novo del(6)(q25) associated with macular degeneration.

An eight-month-old girl with a de novo del(6)(q25) is described. She and other previous cases of 6q deletion showed concordance for developmental retardation associated with multiple unspecific congenital abnormalities, which do not yet allow the delineation of a syndrome. However, bilateral macular degeneration was found in the proposita and had been observed in another similar case, so it probably represents a distinctive feature of 6q terminal monosomy. This observation also suggests the existence of a dominant macular degeneration locus within 6q25----qter.

[Long term therapy of coronary heart disease with 120 mg slow release isosorbide dinitrate once a day. Study of duration of action and development of tolerance].

Twenty-one patients (3 women, 18 males, mean age 55.7 +/- 6 years) with coronary heart disease proven by coronary angiography entered a double blind randomised study with isosorbide dinitrate slow release 120 mg once a day. 2, 12 and 24 hours after acute medication patients underwent a symptom-limited exercise-ECG. The following parameters were measured: ST-depression, blood pressure, heart rate and working capacity. After one week of therapy the same parameters were measured to look for the development of tolerance. Two and twelve hours after acute medication working capacity increased to 220% and 139% respectively. After 24 hours there was no statistically significant effect. The sum of ST-depression in three leads decreased from 4.85 +/- 3.02 mV to 1.87 +/- 0.96 mV (38.5%; p less than 0.05) 2 hours after medication, and to 2.10 +/- 1.73 mV 12 hours after medication. 24 hours after medication there was still a slight but not significant reduction of ST-depression. There was no statistically significant effect in the placebo group. After one week of therapy there was a slight reduction of action, but no development of tolerance.

A comparison of methods for concentrating mutagens in drinking water--recovery aspects and their implications for the chemical character of major unidentified mutagens.

A comparison of techniques for concentrating mutagenic compounds in drinking water has shown that XAD-2 adsorption and dichloromethane extraction have acceptable and almost identical enrichment properties, while purging at an elevated temperature is inappropriate in this context. Quantitatively, the most important drinking water mutagens could only be adsorbed (extracted) after acidification of the water, and even then recovery was far from complete. Recovery experiments with known mutagens from pulp mill effluents have shown that none of the major chlorination-stage mutagens identified thus far can explain the mutagenic activity of extracts from neutral or acidified chlorinated drinking water.

Monosomy 16q: a distinct syndrome. Apropos of a de novo del(16) (q2100q2300).

A 2-month-old boy with delayed growth and development, brachycephaly, large anterior fontanelle, low-set folded ears, micrognathia, aortic coarctation, floppy abdominal muscles, and pes varus, was found to have a 46,XY,del(16)(q2100q2300) de novo karyotype. This observation corroborates both the distinctness of the 16q monosomy syndrome and the pathogenetic role of the band 16q21.

[Investigation of cancer with unicellular algae].

The Euglena alga culture modifications allow to distinguish between tumor serum and control serum. The modifications with ascites tumor AH 13R rat serum were also significatively different from healthy rat. These results suggest that this assay model could be applied for early cancer diagnostics. This communication is a summary of the 50 years work described on the bellow cited literature.

Duration of stretching effect on range of motion in lower extremities.

The duration of the effect of contract-relax stretching on range of motion (ROM) in the lower extremities was measured on eight male volunteers. The stretching procedure was performed as one isometric contraction, followed by relaxation and then a passive extension of the muscle being stretched. The treated muscle groups were the adductors, hamstrings, rectus femoris, iliopsoas, gastrocnemius, and soleus. The total stretching time was 15min. Six ROMs were tested 0, 30, 60, and 90min after the stretching procedure. There was a significant increase in hip abduction (+17% +/- 3), knee flexion (+4% +/- 1), hip flexion (+4% +/- 2), ankle dorsiflexion with knee flexed (+18% +/- 7), and ankle dorsiflexion with knee straight (+16% +/- 5). The increase remained for 90min for all ROMs except for ankle dorsiflexion with the knee straight.

Kinetic interactions between azlocillin, cefotaxime, and cefotaxime metabolites in normal and impaired renal function.

Cefotaxime (CTX) kinetics, alone and in combination with azlocillin (AZ), were determined in 18 subjects with either normal or impaired renal function. After the single dose and with increasing renal insufficiency, total CTX clearance fell from 266 to 71 ml/min/1.73 m2. At the same time the terminal t1/2 rose from 1.1 to 2.8 hr. Regardless of the degree of renal function, CTX clearance in combination with AZ in all patients was only 50% to 60% of that with CTX alone. This reduction in total body clearance was due to a parallel decrease in renal and nonrenal clearance. In advanced renal failure, particularly after AZ, the terminal t1/2 of the CTX metabolites increased up to 1000% to 1500% of normal. On the basis of these findings, CTX dosage adjustment is recommended only in patients with a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) below 20 ml/min. After AZ, however, dosage reduction of CTX seems to be advisable at an earlier stage of renal impairment (GFR 40 ml/min).

Muscle strength and flexibility in different positions of soccer players.

One-hundred eighty soccer players were tested for muscle strength in knee extension and knee flexion and for flexibility in the lower extremity. The strength measurements were done with a Cybex II isokinetic device (Lumex, Bay Shore, New York). The range of motion (ROM) was measured according to a method described by Ekstrand et al. (1982). The players were divided into groups according to their player position: goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards. The results showed a significantly higher knee extensor torque in goalkeepers and defenders than in forwards (P less than 0.05). The knee flexion/knee extension ratio (H/Q ratio) was significantly higher for forwards compared to goalkeepers (P less than 0.001) and defenders (P less than 0.01). The goalkeepers were significantly more flexible than the other players in hip flexion (P less than 0.001), knee flexion (P less than 0.01), and ankle dorsiflexion (P less than 0.001).

De novo del(3)(q2800).

A severely malformed girl who died at 3 months of age was found to have de novo del(3)(q2800). The main features were retarded growth and development, microdolichocephaly, bilateral microphthalmia, bilateral cleft lip and palate, cardiac murmur, clenched hands and long flat feet with flexed toes. The phenotypical comparison with the other three 3q partially monosomic patients so far reported did not allow the individualization of a distinct syndrome.

Tetrasomy 18p: a distinctive syndrome.

A 10-month-old girl with growth and psychomotor retardation and pyramidal signs, was found to have a 47,XX,inv(9)(p11q13),+i(18p) karyotype. Whereas the inverted chromosome was inherited from the father, the isochromosome was of unknown origin. A comparative analysis with 17 similar cases from the literature lead to the conclusion that the tetrasomy 18p actually constitutes a distinctive syndrome.

Cephalometric radiography and computed tomography in infants undergoing major craniofacial surgery--a comparison.

Craniofacial growth after surgery in children is not completely understood. We have therefore formed a programme for pre- and postoperative studies with both roentgencephalometric- and computed tomographic investigations. This regimen results in overlapping information. Thus, an assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of the two methods was made and exemplified in four patients. In our experience both cephalometry and CT are essential for the diagnosis, surgical planning and follow-up of surgically treated children with craniofacial anomalies. To minimize the radiation doses and the diagnostic procedures which in these cases often includes general anesthesia, patients with isolated, asymmetrical conditions such as plagiocephaly, might be followed with CT only, since roentgencephalometry can not add much information.
