2-Deoxy-D-glucose inhibition of prostaglandin E1 hyperthermia and yeast fever in mice.

2-Deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) and sodium salicylate were evaluated relative to their effects on body temperature in mice with prostaglandin E1 (PGE1)hyperthermia or yeast fever. Injection of 2-DG into the cerebral ventricles of conscious mice abolished the hyperthermia of PGE1 and reduced the fever produced by yeast, while sodium salicylate was effective only in yeast fever. The data are suggestive of glucose dependency of thermoregulatory centers in the brain.

Use of a rapid ultrafiltration technique in the determination of plasma glycerol.

The use of plasma ultrafiltrates in the enzymatic analysis of glycerol has been compared with filtrates prepared by using metaphosphoric acid and heat denaturation. The results which were obtained with these three methods of deproteinization are comparable; however, the membrane ultrafiltration technique is the simplest of the procedures and yields an undiluted filtrate which is free of foreign ions.

Hypobaric hypoxia: effects on early development of tryptophan oxygenase in neonatal rats.

Despite a reduction in liver and body weights of neonatal rats born and reared at a simulated altitude of 5790 meters (oxygen pressure, 76.36 millimeters of mercury), the hepatic enzyme tryptophan oxygenase develops prematurely in these stressed animals as compared to controls reared at sea level. Also, the specific activities remain distinctly elevated through the first 9 days of age; thus, the competence for premature synthesis ot tryptophan oxygenase is confirmed in neonatal rats.
