[Free formaldehyde determination in cosmetic products by the HPLC method].

In order to standardize the analytical methods and procedures with the ones used in the EU, a method of free formaldehyde determination in cosmetic products preserved with formaldehyde donors, recommended by Commission Directive (90/207/EEC of 4th April, 1990), has been tested. The free formaldehyde level is determined by HPLC using post column derivatisation with acetylacetone. Formaldehyde content was determined in 44 fortified samples of cosmetic emulsions and shampoos. Recoveries ranged from 94.8-97.5%. Relative Standard Deviation 1-2.3%.

[Hair colorants].

The properties, mode of action and its duration of the preparations used for hair dyeing are described, together with their chemical components, and also preparations of herbal origin. The chemical reactions are described in detail which lead the development of a color polymer occurring during hair dyeing. The studies are presented which are used for toxicological assessment of the raw materials which are the components of the colorants, and the list is included of hair colorants permitted for use in Poland.

[Nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA)--properties and environmental behavior. II. Ecotoxicity and biodegradability of NTA in the environment].

The results are described of studies on the effects of NTA on aqueous organisms and crops. The results show that NTA at concentrations determined in natural water systems causes no disturbances of the equilibrium in ecosystems. The conditions of the NTA biodegradation process in communal sewage and in surface waters and the effects of the processes taking place in water treatment systems destined for providing drinking water on NTA degradation are described. In a summary of the results of monitoring studies conducted in countries where NTA has been accepted for widespread use in washing powders the problems are stressed which will require solving before the decision is made of permission of NTA use in Poland. As of now, there are no full data making possible permission of using NTA in products of household chemistry.

[Nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA)--properties, distribution and behavior in the environment. I. Chemical and toxicological properties of NTA].

The reason of the interest shown in the properties of NTA is the possibility of its use for the replacement of polyphosphates in washing powders which are the cause of water eutrophization. In the light of literature data the chemical properties of NTA and the conditions influencing the course of the reaction of complex formation with metal ions in aqueous solutions are discussed Equilibrium constants of these reactions are presented, with diagrams obtained in computer assisted analysis of the conditions of equilibrium of NTA reaction with metal ions in the solutions occurring in physiological conditions and in the environment. On the basis of the opinions of expert committees the toxicity of NTA for mammalian organisms are described. It has been shown that NTA has no teratogenic or mutagenic action, however, in 2-year observations of mice and rats the intake of NTA produced lesions of uroepithelium with development of tumours. This effect of NTA has been demonstrated to be closely connected with its property of complex formation with metal ions. Experiments are described in which confirmation was obtained of the hypothesis that pathological lesions of renal tabules are caused by accumulation of zinc and bladder tumours are caused by binding by NTA of calcium from epithelial cells.

[Formaldehyde determination using the colorimetric method with acetylacetone. II. Formaldehyde determination in cosmetic emulsions and certain household products].

Total formaldehyde content was determined by the colorimetric method with acetylacetone in cosmetic emulsions and household products. The commercial products not containing formaldehyde were fortified with 150 micrograms of the investigated compound. Recovery in this method was 93.3-102.6%. The method was found useful in routine determinations of formaldehyde in cosmetics and household products and can be used by the State Sanitary Inspections.
