Aeolian processes at the Mars Exploration Rover Meridiani Planum landing site.

The martian surface is a natural laboratory for testing our understanding of the physics of aeolian (wind-related) processes in an environment different from that of Earth. Martian surface markings and atmospheric opacity are time-variable, indicating that fine particles at the surface are mobilized regularly by wind. Regolith (unconsolidated surface material) at the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity's landing site has been affected greatly by wind, which has created and reoriented bedforms, sorted grains, and eroded bedrock. Aeolian features here preserve a unique record of changing wind direction and wind strength. Here we present an in situ examination of a martian bright wind streak, which provides evidence consistent with a previously proposed formational model for such features. We also show that a widely used criterion for distinguishing between aeolian saltation- and suspension-dominated grain behaviour is different on Mars, and that estimated wind friction speeds between 2 and 3 m s(-1), most recently from the northwest, are associated with recent global dust storms, providing ground truth for climate model predictions.

Pancam multispectral imaging results from the Opportunity Rover at Meridiani Planum.

Panoramic Camera (Pancam) images from Meridiani Planum reveal a low-albedo, generally flat, and relatively rock-free surface. Within and around impact craters and fractures, laminated outcrop rocks with higher albedo are observed. Fine-grained materials include dark sand, bright ferric iron-rich dust, angular rock clasts, and millimeter-size spheroidal granules that are eroding out of the laminated rocks. Spectra of sand, clasts, and one dark plains rock are consistent with mafic silicates such as pyroxene and olivine. Spectra of both the spherules and the laminated outcrop materials indicate the presence of crystalline ferric oxides or oxyhydroxides. Atmospheric observations show a steady decline in dust opacity during the mission. Astronomical observations captured solar transits by Phobos and Deimos and time-lapse observations of sunsets.

Pancam multispectral imaging results from the Spirit Rover at Gusev Crater.

Panoramic Camera images at Gusev crater reveal a rock-strewn surface interspersed with high- to moderate-albedo fine-grained deposits occurring in part as drifts or in small circular swales or hollows. Optically thick coatings of fine-grained ferric iron-rich dust dominate most bright soil and rock surfaces. Spectra of some darker rock surfaces and rock regions exposed by brushing or grinding show near-infrared spectral signatures consistent with the presence of mafic silicates such as pyroxene or olivine. Atmospheric observations show a steady decline in dust opacity during the mission, and astronomical observations captured solar transits by the martian moons, Phobos and Deimos, as well as a view of Earth from the martian surface.

The landing of the NEAR-Shoemaker spacecraft on asteroid 433 Eros.

The NEAR-Shoemaker spacecraft was designed to provide a comprehensive characterization of the S-type asteroid 433 Eros (refs 1,2,3), an irregularly shaped body with approximate dimensions of 34 x 13 x 13 km. Following the completion of its year-long investigation, the mission was terminated with a controlled descent to its surface, in order to provide extremely high resolution images. Here we report the results of the descent on 12 February 2001, during which 70 images were obtained. The landing area is marked by a paucity of small craters and an abundance of 'ejecta blocks'. The properties and distribution of ejecta blocks are discussed in a companion paper. The last sequence of images reveals a transition from the blocky surface to a smooth area, which we interpret as a 'pond'. Properties of the 'ponds' are discussed in a second companion paper. The closest image, from an altitude of 129 m, shows the interior of a 100-m-diameter crater at 1-cm resolution.

Imaging of small-scale features on 433 Eros from NEAR: evidence for a complex regolith.

On 25 October 2000, the Near Earth Asteroid Rendevous (NEAR)-Shoemaker spacecraft executed a low-altitude flyover of asteroid 433 Eros, making it possible to image the surface at a resolution of about 1 meter per pixel. The images reveal an evolved surface distinguished by an abundance of ejecta blocks, a dearth of small craters, and smooth material infilling some topographic lows. The subdued appearance of craters of different diameters and the variety of blocks and different degrees of their burial suggest that ejecta from several impact events blanketed the region imaged at closest approach and led to the building up of a substantial and complex regolith consisting of fine materials and abundant meter-sized blocks.

What do women want? Women's experiences of infertility treatment.

Finnish women's experiences of infertility treatment were investigated by examining their satisfaction and dissatisfaction, and their most positive and negative experiences with the treatment. Three hundred and forty four (16%) out of the 2,189 women respondents to a 1994 postal survey (response rate 74%) had experienced difficulties in having a baby. Two-thirds had sought medical help, generally from private gynaecologists. Less than half of the women were satisfied with the infertility treatment, expressing less satisfaction than is generally found among health care clients. Dissatisfied women were more often 35-39 years of age, in treatment during the study period, in treatment in public clinics and not successful in having a baby. However, about one-third of the women were unsure about or did not give their opinion in regard to satisfaction. The subsequent birth of a baby was the most common reason for satisfaction. The most positive treatment experience was respectful, empathic and personal care from the doctor. Unsatisfactory encounters with health care personnel were the main reasons for dissatisfaction and were most often cited as the most negative treatment experience. This dissatisfaction could reflect relatively young and healthy women's assertive attitudes toward infertility care services in the context of the intimacy and vulnerability of childlessness.

Automated quantitation of hemoglobin-based blood substitutes in whole blood samples.

It is necessary to develop methods for accurate monitoring of cell-free hemoglobin in circulation. Routine monitoring of circulating cell-free hemoglobin will be useful for evaluating the efficacy of blood substitute administration andfor determining the clearance rates of the blood substitute from circulation. In addition, discriminating between cell-free hemoglobin and cell-associated hemoglobin will enable accurate determination of RBC indices, mean cell hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, in individuals receiving hemoglobin-based blood substitutes. As colorimetric methods used by hematology analyzers to quantitate the hemoglobin value of a blood sample cannot distinguish between cell-associated and cell-free hemoglobin, it is currently not feasible to quantitate the levels of hemoglobin substitutes in circulation. The advent of a technology that measures volume and hemoglobin concentration of individual RBCs provides an alternative strategy for quantitating the cell-associated hemoglobin in a blood sample. We document that the combined use of cell-based and colorimetric hemoglobin measurements provides accurate discrimination between cell-associated and cell-free hemoglobin over a wide range of hemoglobin levels. This strategy should enable rapid and accurate monitoring of the levels of cell-free hemoglobin substitutes in the circulation of recipients of these blood substitutes.

NEAR at eros: imaging and spectral results

Eros is a very elongated (34 kilometers by 11 kilometers by 11 kilometers) asteroid, most of the surface of which is saturated with craters smaller than 1 kilometer in diameter. The largest crater is 5.5 kilometers across, but there is a 10-kilometer saddle-like depression with attributes of a large degraded crater. Surface lineations, both grooves and ridges, are prominent on Eros; some probably exploit planes of weakness produced by collisions on Eros and/or its parent body. Ejecta blocks (30 to 100 meters across) are abundant but not uniformly distributed over the surface. Albedo variations are restricted to the inner walls of certain craters and may be related to downslope movement of regolith. On scales of 200 meters to 1 kilometer, Eros is more bland in terms of color variations than Gaspra or Ida. Spectra (800 to 2500 nanometers) are consistent with an ordinary chondrite composition for which the measured mean density of 2.67 +/- 0.1 grams per cubic centimeter implies internal porosities ranging from about 10 to 30 percent.

Imaging of asteroid 433 eros during NEAR's flyby reconnaissance

During the 23 December 1998 flyby of asteroid 433 Eros, the Near-Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft obtained 222 images of Eros, as well as supporting spectral observations. The images cover slightly more than two-thirds of Eros (best resolution is approximately 400 meters per pixel) and reveal an elongated, cratered body with a linear feature extending for at least 20 kilometers. Our observations show that Eros has dimensions of 33 x 13 x 13 kilometers. The volume, combined with the mass determined by the NEAR radio science experiment, leads to a density of 2.5 +/- 0.8 grams per cubic centimeter. This relatively high density, and the presence of an extensive linear feature, suggest that Eros may be a structurally coherent body.

Mice lacking the transcription factor CIITA--a second look.

We have generated a second line of mice lacking a transcription factor thought to be a critical regulator of MHC class II gene expression, CIITA (for class II transactivator). Our and the previously published lines differ in the deletion that was engineered and by the fact that we removed the neomycin-resistance promoter and structural gene via the cre-loxP recombination system. Characterization of our line led to two new findings. First, a substantial number of cells can express class II molecules in the absence of CIITA, albeit at 5-fold reduced levels, most notably dendritic cells in s.c. lymph nodes; therefore, the CIITA gene cannot be an absolute 'master gene' controlling the expression of class II molecules, as had been thought. Second, in contrast to recent results on human cell lines, CIITA is not critically involved in the IFN-gamma-induced up-regulation of MHC class I genes.

NEAR's flyby of 253 mathilde: images of a C asteroid

On 27 June 1997, the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft flew within 1212 kilometers of asteroid 253 Mathilde. Mathilde is an irregular, heavily cratered body measuring 66 kilometers by 48 kilometers by 46 kilometers. The asteroid's surface is dark (estimated albedo between 0.035 and 0.050) and similar in color to some CM carbonaceous chondrites. No albedo or color variations were detected. The volume derived from the images and the mass from Doppler tracking of the spacecraft yield a mean density of 1.3 +/- 0.2 grams per cubic centimeter, about half that of CM chondrites, indicating a porous interior structure.

Physicians' gender and clinical opinions of reproductive health matters.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of physicians' gender when sex-specific conditions are being treated in a country where almost half of the physicians are women. Five Finnish surveys originally conducted for other purposes were reanalyzed. Two surveys examined physicians' and medical students' views about hormone therapy during and after menopause, one survey examined medical students' attitudes about medicines, one survey examined physicians' obstetric practices, and one examined contraceptive counselling. All the surveys showed more similarities than differences in the clinical decision-making of women and men physicians. In opinions about menopause the physician's medical specialty was more important than gender. Physicians' obstetrical practices were also similar in five cases out of six, but in one situation where medical factors were not a deciding issue, women physicians acted differently. These results suggest that socialization into the medical profession makes physicians' practices more alike and diminishes gender differences.

Enhanced absorption of macromolecules. A secondary factor in Crohn's disease.

We explored the function of the intestine's mucosal barrier to foreign antigen entry in Crohn's disease. Macroscopically and microscopically uninvolved areas of the small intestines of patients with Crohn's disease were examined. We studied 27 endoscopic biopsy samples from 17 patients with Crohn's disease and 14 samples from nine controls. The absorption and degradation of horseradish peroxidase (molecular weight 40,000 Da) were studied in Ussing chambers. The absorption of intact horseradish peroxidase was significantly increased in patients with moderate or severe Crohn's disease: 271 (95% confidence interval 119-616) ng/hr/cm2, but not in those with slight disease activity: 42 (18-98), compared with controls: 45 (32-64); F = 10.90, P = 0.0002. The transport rates of degraded horseradish peroxidase were comparable in the Crohn's disease samples and controls. Our results indicate that enhanced absorption of macromolecules is associated with clinical activation of Crohn's disease, and impairment of the mucosal barrier function is a secondary phenomenon in Crohn's disease.

Increased bacterial urease activity in faeces in juvenile chronic arthritis: evidence of altered intestinal microflora?

The intestinal microflora was indirectly evaluated in juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) by analysing enzyme activities--urease, beta-glucosidase and beta-glucuronidase--in faeces. In 18 out of 26 JCA patients, the illness had been diagnosed during the past year. The control group was composed of eight age-matched control patients and 18 family members of JCA patients (3-36 yr). The mean [95% confidence interval (CI)] urease activity, but not the activities of beta-glucosidase and beta-glucuronidase, in faeces from the JCA group differed from that in the control group: 32.3 (26.6-38.1) nmol/min/mg protein vs 24.0 (16.8-31.6), P = 0.07. The difference was more marked in a comparison of JCA patients with family members (P = 0.03). In a subgroup of subjects, the effect of 10 days oral bacteriotherapy with Lactobacillus GG on faecal enzyme activities was then investigated (n = 8 JCA patients, n = 8 control patients). This short-term oral bacteriotherapy reduced the increased urease activity in faeces of JCA patients. Keeping in mind the small number of subjects, it may be inferred from the present results that the increased urease activity in JCA is specific for the disease, suggesting altered intestinal microflora in JCA.

Promotion of IgA immune response in patients with Crohn's disease by oral bacteriotherapy with Lactobacillus GG.

The effect of oral bacteriotherapy with human Lactobacillus casei strain GG (10(10) colony-forming units twice daily for 10 days) was investigated in Crohn's disease and in juvenile chronic arthritis which are chronic inflammatory diseases associated with impaired mucosal barrier function. During oral bacteriotherapy, the gut immune response was indirectly assessed by solid-phase enzyme-linked immunoassay in 14 children with Crohn's disease, in 9 with juvenile chronic arthritis, and in 7 controls. The immunostimulatory effect of Lactobacillus GG was specific for Crohn's disease, irrespective of its activity: the mean (95% confidence interval) number of specific antibody secreting cells in the IgA class to beta-lactoglobulin increased significantly from 0.2 (0.04-1.3) to 1.4 (0.3-6.0)/10(6) cells and to casein from 0.3 (0.1-1.4) to 1.0 (0.2-4.8)/10(6) cells. The results indicate that orally administered Lactobacillus GG has the potential to increase the gut IgA immune response and thereby to promote the gut immunological barrier. Consequently, Lactobacillus GG could provide an adjunct nutritional therapy for Crohn's disease.

The psychosocial impact of cancer on older versus younger patients and their families.

Past studies of the psychosocial aspects of cancer have been largely descriptive, with little discussion of differences among cancer patients. Age differences have been noted repeatedly in studies of the effects of various cancer treatments. To determine whether age differences are also present the prevalence of various psychosocial problems often associated with cancer, analyses of data obtained from several different studies of Rhode Island cancer patients' psychosocial conditions were conducted, comparing the responses of older and younger patients. Psychosocial factors examined included multiple measures of functional quality of life, emotional well-being, social consequences, knowledge and use of formal services, and familial reactions. The studies examined included newly diagnosed patients and those undergoing outpatient radiation or chemotherapy for recurrent disease. Except in functional status measures, older persons with cancer manifested fewer and less severe psychosocial problems. The authors contend that older patients have fewer competing demands on their time and resources than do younger patients. This, along with different expectations, may mitigate the negative impact of the specific psychosocial consequences of the disease and its treatment.
