Cranial hypertrophic interstitial neuropathy.

The authors describe a patient with complex cranial neuropathy caused by pathologically proved hypertrophic interstitial neuropathy. Plain and contrast-enhanced MR studies were performed prior to surgical exploration. Surgical complications caused the patient's death and a complete pathology study was done. Though nonspecific, MR proved helpful in determining the extent of disease and areas of anatomic involvement.

[Treatment of diaphyseal pseudoarthrosis with transosseous osteosynthesis by the Ilizarov method. Radiographic signs of reparative osteogenesis].

The main phases of ossification are shown-based on the results achieved by re-examining the X-ray pictures of 14 patients affected by tubular bones pseudoarthrosis treated with Ilizarov's closed compression-distraction osteosynthesis. The roentgen signs in particular are examined which are considered as expressive of positive evolution of the pseudoarthrosis. An outline of X-ray evolution of nonunions is also proposed, referring to the peculiar biological characters of ossification under compression-distraction stimulation.

Circadian rhythms in human performance and affective state.

After reviewing earlier contributions to the understanding of the physiology of circadian system in man, in particular his cognitive aspects, we report on own studies obtained using the fractional desynchronization technique to induce internal desynchronization in man. These results show that in temporal isolation studies, rhythms in some performance measures follow a period of about 21 hours, even when the subject's physiological rhythms are apparently synchronized to the 24 hour day. These data are discussed in relationship to current theoretical frameworks in chronobiology.

Bone regeneration in podiatric surgery.

Many factors affect postoperative bone formation. Factors such as age, sex, and trauma cannot be controlled; however, proper technique, a controllable factor, is imperative in achieving good surgical results.

Phase I trial of vinzolidine.

Vinzolidine is a new, orally active, semisynthetic vinca alkaloid which shows broad anti-tumor activity against murine tumor test systems. This phase I study established a 1 day every 2 week schedule of 35 mg/m2 in good-risk patients and of 30 mg/m2 in poor-risk patients. Maximal tolerated dose was 45 mg/m2 with severe neutropenia, syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone, and paralytic ileus. Significant antitumor responses were seen in two patients with lymphoma and in one with squamous cell cancer of the lung.
