Testicular morphology and cell proliferation kinetics of immature germ cells and Sertoli cells in suckling undernourished rats.

Undernutrition during suckling was induced in newborn rats by increasing the litter size to sixteen pups to be fed by one mother. Animals reared in litters of eight served as controls. Undernourished animals showed retarded body and testicular growth during a suckling period of 22 days. Sequential morphogenesis of the testis was not altered up to 15 days of age. However, certain morphological alterations in Sertoli cells and Leydig cells were observed from 15 days onwards. Cell generation cycle of spermatogonial germ cells and supporting cells (future Sertoli cells) on day 9 showed marked prolongation of DNA synthetic phase (S), unaltered post-DNA synthetic phase (G2) and total cycle (Tc) and shortening of the pre-DNA synthetic phase (G1) indicating a depression in DNA synthesis in undernutrition.

Effect of chloroquine and some other antimalarials on the immune mechanism in experimental animals.

The effects of chloroquine and some other antimalarials on the immune responses in experimental animals have been examined. Chloroquine and quinine caused significant decrease of serum anti-SRBC haemagglutination titre. Chloroquine lowered the serum IgM level and also reduced plaque-forming cells in the spleen of mice. The delayed-type hypersensitivity responses to SRBC and the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis were also diminished in rats treated with chloroquine. Thus, the immunosuppressant activity of chloroquine may explain its efficacy in various types of immune disorders.

Role of some radioprotectors on 59Fe uptake in bone marrow after whole-body gamma irradiation to mice.

59Fe uptake in the femur has been studied at four time intervals up to 10 days in mice receiving pretreatment with hydroxytryptophan (HT), AET, MPG and combination of HT and AET or MPG and exposed to 6 Gy whole-body gamma irradiation. MPG or 20 mg/kg dose of AET pretreatment has failed to improve upon the 59Fe uptake depression induced by the gamma irradiation to mice at any of the time intervals. AET (200 mg/kg), HT + AET (20 mg/kg) and HT + MPG treatments though have failed to prevent the initial 59Fe uptake depression induced by the irradiation, have helped a speedy recovery in the iron uptake so that normal level of uptake is obtained on the 7th day. Pretreatment with the HT dose also helps in a speedy recovery as judged on the 7th day and a normal 59Fe uptake is reached in these animals by the 10th day.
