Hydatid cyst of the liver: comparison of CT and MRI.

Twenty-seven cases of proven liver hydatid cysts were examined by MR and CT. On MR the cyst wall showed a rim of low signal intensity on both T2- and T1-weighted imaging. This capsule was more easily identified by MR than by CT. Specific signs of daughter hydatid cysts and detachment of the membrane were also evident by CT and MR examinations. Magnetic resonance was more effective than CT in detecting complications of the cyst; the first echo of T2-weighted imaging showed a very high signal of the hydatid content in cysts that communicated with the biliary tree or in superinfected cysts. However, MR did not help characterize solid or pseudotumoral forms of hydatid disease.

[Post-transfusion pernicious Plasmodium falciparum attack in a patient with renal insufficiency].

The authors report one case of transfusion induced falciparum cerebral malaria. Among the parasites responsible for transfusion malaria, Plasmodium falciparum is rarely implicated, but may be accompanied by serious complications. Different ways of artificial transmission of the parasites are reported. Clinical findings are few, so the examination of blood films is essential for diagnostic. The dangerous blood donor must be identified by immunofluorescent methods. The specific treatment is quinine for cerebral malaria or chloroquine in other cases.

[Internal hernia of the small intestine through a breach of the broad ligament, apropos of a case. Review of the literature].

Strangulated herniation of bowel occurring through a defect of the broad ligament is extremely rare. A recent episode of such a herniation of small bowel through the left mesosalpynx is presented. A review of literature reveals 61 cases previously reported. A classification with 4 types of defects is described. Without antecedent of uterine surgery, delivery trauma and congenital abnormalities are considered to be causes of these defects although real mechanism is unknown. Preoperative CT scan is helpful in suggesting the diagnosis: pelvic loop dilatation, uterine lateral deviation. Surgical management includes reperitonealization of the defect and inspection of the controlateral broad ligament.

In vitro and in vivo efficacy of heat shock protein specific immunotoxins on human tumor cells.

The presence of heat shock proteins (HSPs) on the surface of tumor cells suggested the possibility of using stress proteins as immunological target for specific immunotoxins (ITs). Flow cytometry analysis showed that U937 cells constitutively express both 28 and 60 kDa HSP in vitro, while the HPC-4 cells only express surface HSPs when grown in vivo, i.e. explanted from SCID mice. Incubation of U937 cells with monoclonal antibodies against 28 or 60 kDa HSP, and then with an immunotoxin consisting of a goat anti-mouse antibody linked to the ribosome inactivating protein Saporin-6 specifically inhibits cell proliferation in vitro. Moreover, an anti-HSP60 immunotoxin prepared by direct linking of the specific monoclonal antibody (MoAb) ML30 to saporin was able to inhibit the proliferation of the U937 line in vitro, and tumor growth in SCID mice bearing the human pancreatic carcinoma line HPC-4 in vivo. Finally, low expression of HSPs on the membrane of peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and their resistance to the toxic effect exerted by anti-HSP immunotoxins, suggest further evaluation of the possible applications of anti-HSP immunotoxins for HSP+tumors.
