Lateralization of visual attention in patients with classic migraine and unilateral prodromes.

The present study is aimed to investigate whether and how mechanisms of visual attention are changed into conditions of monohemispheric disorders. For this purpose, Posner's paradygm was applied to classic migraine patients with prodromal phenomena localized in one hemisphere. The subjects were examined in acute phase (within 24 h of the episode end) and after a week or more from the episode (interparoxysmal phase). The patients in interparoxysmal phase behaved as normal subjects. In acute phase, we observed a selective involvement of attentional behaviour in migraineurs with left hemispheric symptoms. A possible explanation might be based on the well-known tendency of this hemisphere to prevail in performing attentive tasks.

[Valpromide (Depamide) in the treatment of acute psychotic states. Open clinical study].

In an open clinical study on the effect of Depamide in acute psychosis, 59 schizophrenic and 23 manic hospitalized patients were tested. They were divided in two groups: in group A, Depamide was administered only after an initial period of treatment with haloperidol or chlorpromazine; in group B instead, Depamide was added from the beginning of the neuroleptic treatment. The results show that the association of Depamide with neuroleptics leads to a reduction of agitation and of the hospitalization period, whereas it ameliorates the adaptation of the patients to the therapeutic milieu.

[Radiographic semeiotics of bone metastasis in thyroid carcinoma].

It's well-known that thyroid malignant cancer often metastatizes to skeletal structures. Analysing a wide casuistry of the National Cancer Institute of Milan, we thought right not only consider most common iconographic findings of these bone metastases, but rarest too. Therefore, we studied many radiological symptoms: osteolysis and its shape; extension in the next soft tissues; absence of the periosteal reaction; some resemblances with other primitive cancer or secondary too and dysplasic focus; the changes after therapy usually give a not univocal interpretation of the pictures regarding these peculiar alterations.

Neural regulation of acid maltase in an unusual adult onset deficiency.

In a 48-year-old female, the first symptoms apparently manifested themselves 18 years before, with occasional tripping and weakness in both legs. During the next 18 years, weakness progressed and the patient developed a waddling gait; she became unable to rise from a lying or seated position unassisted and the shoulder girdle also became affected. Neurological examination revealed limb and shoulder girdle predominantly involving the lower extremities. We established cell cultures from muscle biopsy specimens obtained from our patient and carried out morphological analysis which, although aspecific, demonstrated clear signs of neurogenic suffering. This was confirmed in EMG studies performed. Biochemical analysis revealed very low acid maltase residual activity. We describe an unusual case of adult-onset acid maltase deficiency (AMD) with neurogenic atrophy and low residual activity. Innervated myofibres prepared by co-culturing the patient's myoblasts, with spinal cord foetal mouse explants were not associated with an abnormal in vitro maturation of the innervated myofibres as expected by the very low residual enzymatic activity found both in the muscle biopsy specimens and in the muscle cultures. There is strong suggestion that factors other than the amount of residual activity must be involved to determine the clinical manifestation of this disease.

[Protective effect of colchicine on tissue damage caused by free radicals in hepatic cirrhosis: an experimental study in rats].

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of colchicine on oxidative stress in cirrhosis assessed by lipid peroxidation products. Wistar rats were used and induced hepatic cirrhosis by carbon tetrachloride. After the cirrhosis-induced period colchicine was administrated daily during 90 days. Lipid peroxidation was evaluated by the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances method (TBARS) and chemiluminescence initiated by tert-butyl hydroperoxide. The liver was submitted to histological evaluation to check whether cirrhosis was present. The results demonstrated an higher increase in lipid peroxide levels in cirrhotic tissue when compared with normal tissue and it was decreased by colchicine treatment (P < 0.05). Observing this study, we can conclude that hepatic cirrhosis produce an higher oxidative stress than normal liver and it can be decreased by colchicine treatment.
