[Good clinical practice].

The main rules of the Good Clinical Practice were presented. The very important role of the informed consent, confidentiality and the investigator's moral responsibility was explained. The importance of the Ethical Committee was admitted.

Clinical Trials as Topic↗

[Prenatal adoption].

This paper shows the psycho-sociological factors which have a serious negative impact on childless families, while stressing the importance of the family as basic environment for the development, education and socialisation of man. It presents numerous disorders which affect parentless children brought up in educational institutions. The solution advocated in this paper is prenatal adoption, which responds to the anguish of both childless families and the mothers of unwanted children. Prenatal adoption is also a significant area of medical activity involving great responsibility of the doctor as the first-contact person, who deals directly with the problems of lone pregnant women and abandoned children. The paper informs of the activities of the Prenatal Adoption Centre in Kraków as well as the idea that led to its formation.

[Results of the treatment of acute renal failure in 3 selected dialysis units in southern Poland 1981-1990].

The results of the treatment of patients with acute renal failure (ARF) in dialysis units of Kraków, Nowy Sacz and Tarnów were estimated on the basis of prepared questionnaire. The increased number of patients treated because of ARF was demonstrated in the successive years of the study. The mortality rate in the tested group of patients remained about 27%. It depended on the cause of ARF and equalled to 26.7% in medical, 36.7% in surgical, 8% in obstetrical and 6.7 in urological patients, respectively.

Acid phosphatase, beta-glucuronidase and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase activity of peritoneal neutrophils in patients with terminal renal failure treated by intermittent peritoneal dialysis.

Acid phoshatase (AcP), beta-glucuronidase (GR) and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity in neutrophils obtained from the peritoneal fluid of 50 patients with terminal renal failure treated by intermittent peritoneal dialysis, and of 30 control subjects with normal renal function was semiquantitatively scored using a cytochemical method. This study was repeated in 22 dialyzed patients during the course of bacterial peritonitis. A significant decrease in the AcP score and an increase in the GR score were found in the neutrophils from dialyzed patients. In dialyzed patients with peritonitis, the GR and NAG scores were higher that in those without this complication.

Amygdala-hippocampal atrophy and memory performance in dementia of Alzheimer type.

The aim of the present study was to examine the involvement of brain structures, especially the amygdala-hippocampal complex, in dementia of Alzheimer type (DAT), and to assess the relation of amygdala-hippocampal atrophy with memory dysfunction. 14 patients with DAT and 10 healthy age-matched controls were examined with different neuropsychologic tests including the UCLA-Auditory Verbal Learning Test. MRI was performed with a conventional 1.5-tesla scanner. Atrophy was found in many brain structures of demented subjects in comparison with healthy age-matched controls. The volumes of amygdala-hippocampal complexes and of the temporal lobes of demented subjects were more reduced than the total brain volume and other structures. Memory dysfunction was highly correlated with atrophy of the amygdala-hippocampal complexes and of the temporal lobes. Consequently, DAT seems to affect the amygdala-hippocampal complex and their related function (i.e. memory) more than other cerebral structures, but cerebral degeneration in DAT is not restricted to these structures.
